It will be stamped into the block on the edge where the gearbox bolts to it, to to the right/behind the dip stick

More than likely an NE unless it's been changed.

The NE, SE and SEH are all Big Block engines and all the Parts are interchangable. Try and locate an SE or SEH Cam, Head, ECU and Loom and stick it all on it instead, this'll give you about 15bhp straight away and cant cost much. I have the top end twice in my Garage and €100 is all I ever ask for it.

As for identifucation, as you look at the engine from the front, above the exhaust manifold, where the block meets the head theres a ledge on the block, extended out more than on the rest of the block. Clean it off with some steel wool, a wire brush or some very fine sand paper and it'll say what it is there. As said, its probably an NE but if thats the case, do as I described above.

If you plan to make it a turbo then the NE is slightly more advantageous as its lower compression.

SEH deffo has more oomph even if its only 15bhp difference.
