 I stripped my C20XE to replace the oil/water pump etc and i may of accidently moved the crank with no belt on..ooopslol ?? i now realise i should of marked the belt in comparison with a couple of teeth on the cam/crank pulleys:roll: but surely theres still a way of correcting it! anybody no how....

Thats what i thought, to be honest i haven't properly checked it out yet, but if that is the case do i just align everything back in the correct place?..or is it not as simple as that.
O and if anyone has a quality pic of the cam shafts fitted in a well running XE that could be a great help:D

you just line up all the timing marks mate. the cam ones are on the rocker cover and the cam pulleys and the bottom puley has a mark on it and one on the block. have you ever set up timing before?

No never:D . Errr...well i have painted the rocker cover and replaced the crank pulley:( sooooo:confused: I'll have to check when i get chance later today but idealy pics would help. Ill have a good look through the forums now, theres gotta to be a bundle of pics of stripped XE's!!
DId you set the engine to TDC before you stripped it? Im guessing not.
In which case you need to move the cams and the crank a little bit at a time clockwise until the timing marks line up. You CANT set them one at a time for obvious reasons. You can easily damage valves by being heavy handed with a ratchet!
The verier marks should be pointing up, and the crank mark is on the alternator belt pulley, so you'll need to reattach it (the holes are not symetrical so the pulley wheel only goes on one way). The line on the pulley wheel lines up with a pointer which is at about 2 o clock as you look at it. Make sure its straight as ive sen a lot that are bent.
And next time, be a bit more careful :)

Cool lee thats a great help:thumb: only other problem i have is i have changed the bottom alternator pulley for an alliminium one? this just gets better and better dont itlol so no mark i dont think, but if i was to get hold of an original one of another xe would they be the same??
Don't use the Alternator pulley to set the timing, theres a mark on the oil pump housing / crank.

BFFI lol
Its an E20 (i think) torx socket, a breaker bar (extra long ratchet) and another person holding the flywheel, thats how i un-did mine!

yea thats what i tried breaker bar, still didn't move:wtf: its not a reverse thread by any chance is it??

Not if i remember correctly. It is fooking tight mind!! Check the torque settings for when you do it up! I had a 4ft scaffolding tube and a cast iorn weight to tighten it up lol

lol i just got all the info of migweb, all torque settings, cylinder head bolts sequence etc so i think ill start stripping it this weekend if its not -100 degrees!!!lol cheers pete
Its a normal thread, just done up FT lol
Its something mental like 250Nm torque
8ft scaffold pole comes in handy as an extension for a breaker bar

lol i hope it doesn't come to that, I have stripped most of it down now and understand it completly! can't believe how straight forward it is. This threads been a great help:)

I wish i had taken a pic of me and my dad doing mine up lol. Scaffolding tube, rope and a weight. Did a maths calculation for it aswell... my dad had to show off his engineering knowledge. I'd forgotten mine lol
Never done it myself, but heard of a few folk sticking a bar on the end of a breaker bar that rests against the floor (with the car on its wheels) then click the engine over on the starter.

How about heat on the bolt as thats what you are trying to undo lol
Shouldnt be needed though IMO.

wont heating the bolt make the bolt expand and make it weaker and easier to break the bolt

thats why i said the pulley, well what the pulley is bolted to;). then mabye a buzz gun would work
