View Full Version : Lightweight batteries
Is it possible to get any lightweight batteries that are suited to use on a road car? I quite fancy losing some weight from my battery and possibly relocating it inside the car (so a compact size would also be good too so it could maybe go under a seat).
I enquired about an Odyssey battery and was told they are not suited to slow drains (alarms, radios etc) and so are not suited to a road car. I assume this is the case with Red Top batteries also?
So is anything suited to a road car that can shed a few kg?

Just go to a motor factors and ask for the smallest battery they have :p
Edit: AA and AAA dont count ;)
^ Wouldn't get those at the motorfactors unless it's like mine and sells alcohol too lol
Iain you fcuking mincing cretin, I told you my mate ran an Odyssey on his S14a, blower motor, alarm, immob. the lot. Stop listening to the man :(

Find out what model for me. I can't find much info on the net about light batteries and even less about using them in road cars.
OK seeing as it's you my good friend :)

The 60 weighs in at nearly 18kg though according to the site posted above, pretty sure your average halfords/oem etc battery isn't that heavy? And i'm guessing the 80 is even bigger since that seems to be the trend with their numbering system
18kg lol I was enticed at the thought of a ~6kg battery
Just want to make sure it won't die every night from the alarm etc.

Shouldnt do? Im sure my old one (in old rally car) weight about 8!
Try a Braille Auto battery then. They weight ITRO 15lbs (**** knows how many kg?) uber expensive but then again, no many make Carbon Fibre batterys ;)
Edit: Varley Red Top 30 = 9kg BUT its only 850a.
I was using a REDTOP 30 in my LET, never had any probs with it, weighs in at 9kg and has M6 terminals.
Was that with alarm/headunit or similar slow drains on the battery while it's not used for a few days?
Aye with an alarm and headunit, although if it was gonna sit for a while without being used (over a week) i'd disconnect it.
There will have a been more than a few times it'll have sat connected for a couple of week without being used tho.
Fair enough, a week's fine. Just looked and the Red Top 30 is about £180 though :eek:lol Was looking at ones around £100, oh well.
Aye there a fair price like, i only paid £30 (used one from work) for mine tho so i can't complain !!
Just to give you some idea what you can get away with I could easily start my old 1.4 16V which had a higher than std compression ratio with a motorbike battery. Don't how many starts it would manage tho
