i bought the gbox seperate to the engine and there wasnt a earth strap on it. i also gave mine away with the old gearbox. if this was needed would this be causing it to rum poorly or would it just not run at all?
Late novas never had the earth strap, because there basically crap, rust like fook and then fall apart.
They had a proper earth cable bolted to the starter motor mount bolt which runs straight back to the battery neg terminal.

to see if it works, run a jump lead froma nice metal point on your engine straight to the neg on the battery. thats pretty much all the earth strap does, give it a go and see how it runs
just dont do this permanently, as youll fry the wire!!!!!!!!!
Sloth - what do you mean? if you mean about a jump lead then it will be fine to run it for a while with it, ofc its not a good idea due to the chance of it earthing out somwhere else/falling off if driving.

What? No it wont. Late mk3 Astra have an extra ground for the block/head to the battrey as standard, which alot of people fit to mk2 Astras and Cavs.
if you run a wie to the batt earth and leave the rest off it cooks the wire due to amperage flow. ask a auto leccy. or an ice fitter.
Maybe if you run a wire that is 'pube thin' not with something substantial like a jump lead

Bad earths can result in all manner of odd & strange issues. If it runs - bonus! But in my experience I had dash lights on when the car was locked up & it would not fire or crank at all.
get a new earth strap on it ASAP, it can't hurt.

On late mk2s, the ONLY engine earth they have is basically a jump lead without the clips on ends(bolts to batt and starter), so that obviously isnt true.
It will only melt the wire if it cant take the amps your trying pull through it.
ask a auto leccy.
What i do for a living :wtf:
Jump leads are ment to take the full wack of the battery.
So where did you learn the above? Pub?

My earth strap broke once. I bodged one together from 3-core mains cable and some ring terminals, it was enough to get me to the motor factors :).
Funk me theres some utter sh*te posted in this thread.
Remember jap cars, they ground everything. As you can lose *a ok very small amount of* power from bad grounds. Every single thing in the engine bay is grounded on them.

Has anyone said that you should leave the rest off?
