Alright, I am just getting around to putting in some ICE in my Nova....

I am currently building 'phase 1' of my install - which consists of a false boot floor, new wheel arch covers that also act as parcel shelf supports and a custom parcel shelf hiding some 6x9's (powered off the head unit for the time being). The majority of the woodwork is now finished ( :D ) and I am getting around to adding a 'professional' finish to it.
The first question that I have got is that I bought some 'acoustic carpet' from Halfords (ripspeed), and it doesn't say if it is transparent or not (it is just called "acoustic carpet" - I should have asked them when I bought it, but have only just read some of the posts below that says there is a difference..... is this likely to be transparent (I will ask them next time that I am near a Halfords, but not sure when that will be)?

OK, assuming that this is acoustically transparent carpet it will cover my new parcel shelf and should look the bomb..... 8)

I will be needing some more material for the boot floor and the 2 side supports..... I would ideally like to get some Alcantara to really give a nice, sleek finish, but I can't find anywhere that sells it - has anyone got any contacts for purchasing it? If not, then I need an alteranative to using Alcantara - I could use some acoustic carpet (the non-transparent kind) to keep the materials all the same, but it is expensive, and not very hard wearing..... any suggestions on coverings and where to get them from will be most appreciated....

..... prepare for the second part.....

In the front of the car are some 4" pioneer 20WRMS speakers in the dash, and I have got 50WRMS Alpine 6x9's in the shelf (both powered off the head unit). Since the front speakers are soooo crap they flap and burp when playing bass notes if the stereo is cranked up. I have read that you can put in some electrolytic, non-polarised capacitors to cut out the low frequencies - but what capacitor rating should I use.....? I just want to stop the 4" speakers from attempting to play any bass notes that they can't handle.

..... third and final part (which will start 'phase 2' of my install).....

I am going to be creating some custom door cards and putting in some 6.5" Alpine components. I would just like some tips on the enclosure behind the door card.....
Should the whole of the door be used as an enclosure for the speakers, or should the speakers be contained within a very small enclosure around them? I will be dynomatting the door skin to help stop any rattles, but can't really find any information on the size of the enclosure behind door speakers....

OK thats it..... for the time being anyway....
Cheers in advance guys

I'd also like to know about the carpet from halfords cos its summit like 23 quid, and if it is transparent then cool, if not i might as well just fork out the extra and get a professionally done shelf.

ok m8

part one, about the cloth, cant really be sure without goin up 2 halfords and askin, sorry
about the cloth for covering the rest ov the boot, if you think that the acoustic cloth is expensive u will faint at the price ov alacantra!!! am sure its about ?50 per meter, i have heard loads ov ppl saying that www.boyriven.co.uk is about the best place and cheapest!! what about covering it in noramal carpet that you cover sub boxes with!! much cheaper, easier to use, easier to get a hold ov!!

part two, not sure off hand ov exact values but you would be better off fading the head unit to the rear, or buyin a set ov cross overs and tweeters!!

part three, you will be alot better using the whole door as ur pod as it were because you will be hard pushed to fit a big enough sealed pod onto the door without breakin ur leg when u close the door ;-)

hope that helped m8

Ok so the forum is now back up.... wooooo :!: :!:

I will contact boy riven to see what sort of material he can offer, I still haven't been to Halfords yet but I will go around and quiz them about the carpet.
Cheers for all of the info Ballsy.....

I have done added some capacitors to the front 4" speakers - trial and error, and came up with 22uF capacitors on the +ve of the front speakers. It definately cuts out a lot of bass notes, that the speakers cannot play and allows me to push the sound stage forward to them. With the 6x9's acting as rear fill, and bass.

Will a 6.5" mid be fine in the door, or would a 6.5" and a 5" work better? What frequencies would I need to push to each speaker? I don't want to go OTT with my sounds, but think that a couple of speakers in the doors should help to provide a good clean, crisp sound. Tweeters may be placed in the door card as welll, but I might put them in the dash (original speaker location) or in the 'a' pillars.

Any more help is always appreciated...

tweeters, unlike subs, are VERY directional.

you need to point the tweeters at its audience, for instance, door cards no good, unless angled towards person.

for the best results, u need it at head level and pointing at ears, so a pillar, fantastic.

dash quite good as well

hope that helps a little?

thanks

Yeah man, I think that I will put the tweeters in the 'a' pillars..... or at the very top of the door card right next to the air vent and point them at the driver..... Cheers Mike.

no probs

another place you may consider...... is the triangular shaped piece of plastic where the door mirror adjuster is?

if you have aftermarket mirrors (M3, DTM, or whatever) you have to do something anyway as the handle is rendered useless. sometimes older novas only have one wing mirror, and also some are manual adjust from outside anyway

why not get rid of whatever, and make a build out of that!?

food for thought!

cheers
