View Full Version : 1987 Vauxhall Nova Ski
Bought the car in October 2008 from a village in Lincolnshire. The car was driven occasionally by an old guy but was garaged most of its life. Then it was sold to another guy in the village who bought it for his daughter to learn to drive in but she didn't get round to learning so the car just sat in his garage for a while. As a result the car has only done 15k miles and was almost totally mint! I then purchased the car and drove it back to Cumbria where it sat in my garage for a couple of weeks before going in the bodyshop to have a few minor things touched up.
My original plans were to make it into a Nova Sport replica however after finding out the 'Ski' is a very very rare model, I've decided to leave it how it is for now and do a few other mod's instead.
Anyway, finally got the car back today and took some pics and I have to say I'm very happy with whats been done...

Haven't done anything with the car yet, just stuck on a few bits. Haven't got any axel stands to sit the car on atm so I can't swop the suspension over just yet. Tyres will be getting fitted on Fri so hopefully I'll be able to get the suspension and wheels fitted on Fri.
Today I've just fitted the lower trim for the valance...

what other plans do you have for it chum.
if i owned it, i would fit an exhaust and that would be it complete ..:thumb::thumb::thumb:
i actually love this nova, as above a exhaust sould be its only change, it looks superb!
is it going pv this year? would love to come and have a look round it, looks uber shexii lol
edit:- and 2 more wheel nuts on each wheel wouldnt go a miss lol :thumb:

Not a great deal else planned atm. Things to do list is;
Bigger brakes
Hubs, TCA's, tiebars, calipers, etc off and all painted up with new bolts to freshen it up
Eccentric topmounts
Rear drums painted up
All 4 arches properly undersealerd (possibly painted body colour)
New exhaust (quite fancy an Ashley Sport back box on it)
Maybe a snowplough bumper
Future plans - would like to put a C16XE on TB's in it (much like Dec's old SR) but thats just an idea atm.
Other than that it will be staying as it is and kept as clean as I can manage!

That is mint mate, lovely looking car ! absolutley like a time warp ! would look really good with the arches painted white, personally i wouldnt go for an xe in there but focus more on a period 8v engine, how about either a 1.4 or 1.6 8v ? as they essentially all look the same.

lol Tempting!
Definately want to keep it small block anyway and relatively period. Just like the Corsa engine idea as it will go straight in on standard mounts and will look good with everthing painted up on it.

thats a foookin beaaaauty matey!! i would leave the exterior as it is ski badges and all!!
Really does look the part, wheels really suit it!!
As for engine plans, I'd stick to 8v small block and twin 40's, just to keep the period look under the bonnet!!

Cracking clean car. Some nice goodies being attached aswell.
Please don't put a snowplough on, as the club is going to need renaming to plough nova group lol
The interior will be staying standard apart from the addition of a pair of headrests.
I like the idea of carbs too, as said it will definately be staying small block!

Small update!
I'm off this week and next week so hopefully going to get a few bits done on the car.
Today I just got the Nova up on axle stands and got all the hubs, TCA's, tiebars etc off. They'll be going under the wire wheel and then freshly painted up. Going to try and clean all the bolts up aswell and take them down the local platers if they come up well and get them zinc plated. If not I'll just get some new ones to make it all look nice and tidy. Also going to get some Hammerite White paint tomorrow and start painting the inner arches to make them all look nice and fresh behind the wheels.
Few pics...

yea the car looks top notch as is loving the comp's and keeping the ski graphics is a big :thumb: up from me.
Another small update. Not alot today as the garage is fecking freezing and I feel terrible. What I've done may not look alot but scrubbing the inner arches, brake lines, inside the turrets etc to get all the crud off, with a toothbrush, is an awfully tedious job! Then waiting for them to dry out properly and then masking the fiddly brake lines with cold hands is a nightmare! lol On top of this I've had to sit my **** for two hours on the concrete floor and dab the inner arches with hammerite!
Took a few pics of the first coat so thought I'd stick them up as I'm tired an bored...
Pics don't do them justice as thery're looking spot on...

Got those bolts from a local engineering company who do speacialists bolts etc and they managed to match them all and get me a new set. Only £11 and I got a load spare.

Are the bolts on the bottom right for the Strut to Hub? If so you really need Lock nuts on them as being where they are theres a good possibility of them slackening.

I would say they are for the tie bars, which aren't nyloc as standard. The strut to hub bolts are the 4 furthest to the left.

Looking good mate ! Painting the inner arches body colour is something that most people never think of but it really makes a hell of a difference, plus it should help keep the rust at bay which as i'm sure everyone will agree is always a good thing hey ! very nice car, keep it up !!
Haven't done much with the car because I HATE painting and that‘s what needs done atm! Finished painting the front arches anyway and yesterday cleaned the tiebars, TCA's etc back to bare metal with a drill and sanding disc and dusted them with high build primer. Have sprayed the tiebars and TCA’s today and I just can’t seem to get a decent finish on them. I build it up in thin layers leaving about 30mins between coats but I’ve still ended up with runs, bubbles and bits where the paint just wont set. Hate trying to spray things with a can! Might just get them powder coated or something and be done with them as it seems I’m just terrible at painting :(
Couple of pics I took dismorning anyhow...

looks nice matey tidy!!
Cheers!
I'm sick of it atm though. The tiebars etc turned out naff so gonna have to clean them all back again and then take them down the powder coaters to get a decent finish on them. Wont be doing anything for a while now though as I go away again for a couple of weeks tonight so the car will just remain up on axle stands for a while.
Wanted to get all the arches and bits cleaned up and painted during these last two weeks but as I've been ill and not had a car to get about in I've got f*ck all done! Quite pissed off tbh.
Looks much better for the 2nd coat matt! Just think about the end result.

Paint the suspension bits for the front and paint the rear inner arches and the drums.
Then I'll be looking for a nice exhaust system and possibly some engine bits. Off for a month at Easter so hopefully I'll get it all done, MOT'd and back on the road then.
:thumb:
Are the centre caps on the comps anodised?? Small touch but I bet they would look awesome in red, to go with the bumpstrips and the pinstripe!!
Ps love it!! Ipitimises the perfect Nova for me!!:thumb:
No real update...
Did a couple of bits with the car this weekend and got it back on four wheels and out the garage. Managed to finally get a nice finish on all the hubs etc and bolted them all back on - I've got some pics on my cam but the battery has died so I'll upload them later.
Haven't been that enthusiastic about the car for the last couple of months as it's just sat in the garage doing nothing so got it out and took some pics on my other cam just for the hell of it...

I had MO's on my old Mk2's and they caught on the arch lips on both cars.
Paint the centres and the edges of the discs before you fit them for good, stop them going rusty and looking sh*t, i'll get those topmounts dropped off at somepoint as well.

That top part of the damper doesn't seem to sticking out the top of the nut very far ? not as far as mine did ?
Maybe try them without those spacers ? Take the springs off then just bolt up the topmounts with the spring seat (black bit on top of the spring) and nip them up, if the black bit is clamped up then they'll be ok, if there still loose then you'll have to run with the spacers.
Mine where early GAZ shocks, later ones might be different ?

Aye, I did think about leaving the spacer off as they don't stick through far. Just stuck with them though. Will no doubt whip them off AGAIN next time and see what's what. Did the spacers slot over the slightly thicker part of the piston and sit on top of the spring seat on yours? They're not quite wide enough to do that mine and are just kinda loose before the weight of the car is put on them (seems dodgy).
Aye they sat on the wider part, were machined to fit perfectly, so if there not sitting right on yours then i'd take them.
Older ones are likely different to the newer ones.

Choose your wheels very carefully as they could really set this Car out from the crowd :thumb:

Looking good mate. How did you tighten the top mount nut? (seeing as you cant get to the piston flat)
Was just able to get an 8mm spanner to hold the flat whilst I did up the topmount nut. Didn't put it on really tight as I was pretty sure they'd have to come off again and the spacers taken out. They'll stick through alot more once I've done this.

Think I'm gonna start building a nicely spec'd 1.3 on twin 40's over the summer (when I've got some money coming in) and get a CR F13 box for it. Aye, it's still tempting to do a Sport rep but I like the fact that it's different to anything else. It'll pretty much be a sport bar the decals once the engine has be fettled!
Yer it's missing a couple of bolts form each wheel, just beacuse I'm only rolling it in and out of the garage atm and because I've had the wheels off alot lately.

Cheers! Yeah I'll have a look at that little bit of rust, it's just minimal surface rust though, nothing to worry about. Apart from that, the car is totally rust free tbh. Thing with a white car aswell is you can easily spot any rust and tell whether the car is properly 'mint' or not.

sell me the MOs
looks as mint as always!
Good luck with the MOT. Was the brake problem the piston on each caliper?

Cheers, MO's aren't going anywhere atm, don't know what I want to do with them yet.

Yeah the pistons were siezed and it turns out they weren't fully compressed but wouldn't budge atall! So they were rebuilt and cleaned up.
looks superb, I must say I prefer it with the MOs as it just looks spot on, engine plans sound good too

Had the MOT rescheduled for today as we didn't manage to finish the car on Sun!
Anyway took it down at 12.30 and it FAILED;
Nearside Rear wheel bearing has excessive play
Offside Rear wheel bearing has excessive play
Centre Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases:eek:...
...so quickly got it home, nipped up the rear bearings, took it back, fella stuck a bit of exhaust cement on the little hole and she PASSED!
Good times!

Aye, was a bit crappy when he said he can't pass it but was pleased it was just a couple of niggly bits.
Was great to finally get out a drive it though, especially since I haven't driven atall since October! It's not very fast by any means but sticks to the road a treat in corners! lol

How tight did you do the bearings? Dont over-do them
Good news on the pass
Did you take it down to Mallys ? (burnfoot), i reckon that'd be the first time Ol'Rodgers failed a car for a while !! lol

Didn't over do them, they could still be tightend further, just did them enough to get rid of the bit of play that was there.

Aye, took it down Mallys, both of them sound fellas like! lol What an animal Mallys Evo is!
Rodger had a lad there doing work experience so maybe felt he had to be a bit more tight! Offered me a jack etc if I wanted to just sort the couple of bits out the back lol Had me up on the ramps aswell shouting out what to do, amusing fella tbh.

Ah goodie on the mot pass. My mot tester is frendly like that.
If you know the mot tester it makes it much better lol
I bloody love this car.
Needs a Declan Burke style engine bay as per the Gen Chat post though Matt. Will be awesome then.
