View Full Version : Nova build by Chris Astley Motorsport

Im finally getting on with building my next nova, this is the shell which i started to use for the VXR engine transplant a while back, i decided against that project due to lack of time and as a competition car it would be unpractical and inelligible for some forms of motorsport.
Any way, i have just had the shell professionally cleaned prior to commencing welding later this week.

The shell has got some small areas of rust but nothing major. I have a weld-in cage to fit, seat rails, gearbox mount which was kindly donated by Simps from his saloon as i removed the one on this during the previous VXR attempt.
Im planning to build something special for under the bonnet which i dont think has been done before, all im saying for now is its small block aspirated:cool: which is the best way for any Nova:nod:
Will get some more pics up as i go through the welding.

Got some welding done today, most of the underneath seam welding has been done, got the gearbox mount cleaned up and welded back on to the chassis leg and put the large plate on from the plating kit.

Thanks for all the good comments.
I hoping to build a 1.8 8v small block, using the c16se cylinder head and x18xe1 bottom end from the mk4 astra, isnt a direct bolt together so will work it out when i get to it.
I love that seat :thumb:lol

The thread is a copy of mig, a few people were asking to let the cat out the bag as i mentioned above.:thumb:
this is stunning.
the cage looks awsome, i personally like the V shaped bar going behind the front seats to strengthen the cars stability (think i'll borrow that one lol) but combined with the rear strut, looks really neat.
is there from experience a better strength to this then a rear diagonal bar, or are you adding one or a cross diag in later?
Chris Astley
29-12-08, 09:21 PM
The cage will also be having a single rear diagonal, screen bar, front triangulation, door bars and rear stays which arent inplace yet, i might get chance to do them tomorrow if i get a head finished im porting (Wont be doing another 20v audi head for while)

Are you gonna start rallying again with this one Chris as i recall you telling me that a weld in is a bit ott just for track use?
I'll second what others have been saying. Makes me think about getting a jig knocked up so I can spin my shell over, would make life so much easier!
Good luck with the build.

Are you gonna start rallying again with this one Chris as i recall you telling me that a weld in is a bit ott just for track use?
Im hoping to do a few road rallies in it when done, other than that i just want a proper tool for taking for a thrash when i feel like it. Weldin can be over the top for some applications but if your doing the full shell then it doesnt really make a difference for me.

The main hoop is 50mm CDS, all other bars are 38mm CDS. I didnt need to bend any bars as they come pre bent in the kit, i just had to profilethe ends and trim them to length.

Easy to say, "I just", first time I tried to profile the ends, I had bars in every angle except the one I wanted, I used a joint jigger, what do you use, lathe mounted tool?
An angle finder is a wonderful thinglol
greg1.4
03-01-09, 12:19 AM
mines is a Fabricage..
very good apart from the bars were not cut to length..
expected to have to profile the ends but not one bar apart from main hoop was correct. we thought me might have got the wrong cage, so phoned and he said he makes them all a few inches longer..
so not only did we have to notch out the bars (with a grinder and file) we had to cut them..
everything is ok now, actual cage is good but maybe thats why the cage was about 200quid cheaper than Custom Cages..
if i ever did another one though i would do the same as what you done on rear suspension tops (looks very tidy) and i would try and get a U shaped brace bar instead of the V that i have got..
would also put cage stiffeners in, make it look mean as anything and tie the shell and cage together even more..
Chris Astley
03-01-09, 04:43 PM
I want some gusset strips for filling in the gaps on the front legs to the screen/A pillar, car is stiff enough wothout them as the cage touches in quite a few places so have welded it to pillars/roof e.t.c.
greg1.4
03-01-09, 06:21 PM

Like the way you have stitch welded the whole shell mate and quality welding at that. If only my welding was that good, I can only weld with super glue lol

This pic shows the Bias pedal box in position, im going to have to use Genuine AP cylinders though because of the lack of space i have, luckily had a used one to try for size.

Great build and as said by so many, fantastic welding.
You say you are going to use it for motorsport but I would like to point out that the feet for the cage are nowhere near big enough to pass scrutineering or get an MSA log book.
If you check the blue book it gives you the minimum dimensions.
Keep up the good work.
first time i've seen this project,
all i can say is fu#king hell, what a project
everybody else have allready said it but
"nice welding"

The cage including feet are made by/designed harry hockley, cage is msa approved and came with certificate to certify the cage design.
