hi, im putting a C14SE on carb into my 1.0 nova but i havent got a spark at the coil.
i think im using a 1.3 sr distributor, (it has a black cap) and 5 wires coming from it.
i guess the black and red wires go to the coil (square type)
but there are also 3 more wires coming out of the distributor, do these go to an ignition module or something?
also which terminal does the live go to on the coil? Can i take the live straight from the battery just to get it started? and do i need the green wire connected as i dont have a rev counter?
cheers,
james
being as its abit of a home brew try this. run a new switched live from the ignition switch to the positive side of the coil and then connect the red from the dizzy to this aswell. then connect the brown from the dizzy to the negative side of the coil
also your green rev counter wire goes to the negative side of the coil

thanks for that,
unfortunatly still no spark, does it matter which side of the coil is +ve and which is -ve? of course it could be my dodgey wiringlol
also any ideas what the other three wires coming from the distributor do because i cant find anywhere that they look like they might go.

oh, and although i said i got an ignition module (6 pin type), its not in the car at the moment, any ideas if its needed with this type of distributor and how to wire it up
in the haynes it says with the 1.3sr dizzy your supposed to have an "idle stabiliser unit" what the hell one of those is i dont know and from what i can tell it only has 4/5 pins
the coil does have specific sides to it

okay, after taking off the dizzy cap i found an ignition module which these mysterious 3 wires aswell as the other 2 seemed to lead into, following burgos wiring on another thread (cheers :thumb:) i managed to get a current on the low tension side, but still no spark at the coil.
btw i couldn't follow the wiring exactly due to the fact that pin 2 (brown) which should have gone to an earth had to go to the coil because it was on the plug which clips onto the coil!

only where its bolted to the car, i assumed it was earthed through the dizzy somehow? i tried to earth one of the 4 pins and it made BIG sparks, so i stopped doing that!

maybe the wires that i'm using to bodge it together have to much resistance so dont give enough current to provide a spark?
hmm looking at the wiring diagram it would seem that is the case providing you have got the gearbox earth strap bolted on??

yes, that is bolted on, not in the best condition but its good enough to run the starter motor and alternator, unless they're earthed somewhere else?
have you tried getting a spark at the spark plugs instead of at the coil

sounds stupid but no i haven't! I thought if there wasnt one at the coil there wouldnt be one at the plugs, worth a shot though i guess.
she's been put to bed now until after x'mas though as the punto's getting a bit fed up of having its battery nicked for use in the novalol. just a thought, but would it be any easier to sort out if i got a different distributor, maybe one with points from an early astra etc?
it might not work. its just ive got a theory which is probably wrong but its worth checking at the plug anyway.
as long as you get all the bits from the same ignition system you should be able to make it work. if you can find out what the idle stabiliser thingy is and get one then ill tell you how to wire it up

cheers, that would be great, will have to keep my eyes open.
ok being as this is bugging me ive looked at the diagrams again and i recon if you take a feed from the live side of the coil and connect it to either the grey or the blue/green that will work. each wire should change the idle slightly aswell i think lol

you genius, will give it a go when i next get a chance, thanks again

okay, as i couldnt find a blue/green or a grey wire the next idea was to change the coil, which i have done, however to no avail :wall: i'm beggining to get a bit annoyed with this now so i'm on the look out for an orange cap dizzy with vacuum advance to replace the lot, as i understand this is just plug and play with the old wiring appart from the live? or if i can find an idle stabiliser unit i'll try that. my only other thought is the wire i've used to replace the live with is giving too much resistance. At the moment im using some speaker wire i had lying around, does anyone know what guage wire i should be using?

use standard 12v dc wire. speaker wire is like using a 1.5mm cable for an electric shower.

haha, lol. Okie dokie, please excuse my ignorance but where can i get this from, maplin or somewhere?

finally got a spark today!! both at the coil and the plugs. picked up dizzy from ebay with points and have ditched the old electronic ignition. just wondering which coil would be best to use with this new dizzy? (i've been using the 1.0 coil) now i've just got to play around with the ignition timing and hopefully will get it running soon:)
its because you have a 5wire black cap dizzy mate. with this dizzy you need the extra loom (plugs into 3pin plug) which has an ignition amplifier thingy lol and a small vacuum switch to go the the vacuum advance line.
if you open the dizzy up and remove the 3pin wiring connector (to make it a 2wire dizzy) it may work.
on the other hand just use a basic 1.2 black cap 2wire dizzy and coil.
what are you doing with your 5wire dizzy? and do you have the small black box with 3 round 3pin connectors on it?
