View Full Version : Small block nova build
As recently there has been a lot of small block vs big block debates I thought I better post the pics up of a friends nova just to prove I'm not biased in any way.
I personally think its one of the cleanest built novas I've seen in years and more to the point al done by the owner except for the red paintwork :thumb:
Its likely some of you may of already seen the car this year but its going through some changes for 2009 so I thought I'd start a thread for him so there is something to update when the new parts are fitted.
The car was originally a poverty spec nova, rusty arches but otherwise a solid base to start from, I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Outstanding car, love it!
Outstanding car, love it!
I think as far as track cars go its one of nicest built ones, I think as road cars go yours in in a league of its own :thumb:
Reminds me of Benji's before it went white. :) Looks lovingly built that does.
Indeed, what on earth happened to him
that gear linkage is just porn lol

sexy wee time! Is he local JB?
awesome car, any gen on the engine spec?
Yes mate, he does look at the site, just doesn't post, he has a reason to now lol
awesome car, any gen on the engine spec?
All I know is its high compression, modded head, a kent cam kit of some sort.
Gearbox has 4:1 f/d and a quaife diff
car is stunning.
fair play, alot of hard graft in there and it looks like its all paid off.

Not one bit, he sent me the pics of the shell before it was painted but I never actually saw the car until it was finished.
He doesn't really need any help doing it as he seems to be coping quite well on his own lol It certainly gave me a lot of inspiration IF I was to build another.

All I can say is a lot more tasty parts are to be fitted yet, the engine being replaced being the main part.
Staying small block for those concerned :thumb:
small block ftw
that car looks very well done

Looks like a quality build that...... Go on James build yourself another :)
One project is more than enough for me, the Tigra is a cheap side project, I couldn't afford to build another nova without ditching the Escort project and I'm not doing that.

not seen this until now..
textbook trackday car - all the discoveries over the years thrown in on that one.
one of the best there, surely.
Small update, the engine and box from this car is for sale.
I can't tell you much on the engine except it was a freshly built engine a year or so ago,, modded head, kent cam and springs, new lifters, Weber 40's, gearbox is F13 with 4:1 cwp and Quaife LSD
Complete package is £1000
I'll get a spec sheet for the engine for anyone interested, the engine is currently still in the car and staying there until the new one is assembled so anyone wanting to hear it running has time to do just that.

lol gess your joking?
Really good build that, even better which a decent shell to start with.
Any idea what bhp its making?
Yes joking about V6, still staying small block but going for a bulletproof engine.
No idea on the engines power, I think its been on the rollers when it was in the last car he head which ran 14's up the pod !

Looks bloody lovely that, definately along the same lines I'm going with mine with regards to spec and quality. Workmanship looks top notch throughout, gear linkage assembly looks amazing.
Hope to see it at some shows this year.
Bump for Ben, no updates and going to be 8-10 weeks until there is one due to parts being on order.
The car will be on the Vauxsport stand at PVS so anyone wanting more info on the engine and the package can speak to the man in person as I can't honestly answer all the questions I've asked via PM.
Another BTTT
I believe the DKE Crank has finally turned up so the new engine will be going together shortly and this one will be coming out which is still for sale if anyones interested ?
I went to Bedford with him last month and had a cracking day out, still shocks me just how well it hangs on in the bends and how it just loves being flat out, GREAT fun !
Anyway here is a video, excuse the **** quality but I can't convert it from mov to avi without it dropping a shed load of quality ?

Edit now its uploaded to YouTube ! the quality and sound is terrible, I'll try and sort that !

driver and car go like a biatch
wow that goes well can you find out engine spec please
:)
I'll ask him to write out a spec list, infact he is over later so I'll sort it then !
asweome build, be interesting to see the new engine/spec
I'll ask him later if he wants that posting but its a nice build.
Spec of the old engine to appear in a advert later tonight or tomorrow
The new engine spec is :
Bored and Decked C16XE Block
Omega High Compression Pistons (unsure on C/R)
Arrow Steel rods
DKE Steel Crankshaft
Glyco Bearings
Cometic Multi Layer Head Gasket
Pace Dry Sump Kit
Neil Roper Cylinder Ported Cylinder Head
Oversize REC Valves
Bronze Guides
Arrow Solid Lifters
Piper Valve Springs
Piper Retainers
Piper Custom Camshafts
Piper Vernier Pulleys
45mm Tapered Jenvey Throttle Bodies
MBE 967 Ecu and Loom
Tony Law Exhaust manifold
It will be bolted to a F20 box with a Quaife SCCR Gearset and a ATB diff
With another 80 odd hp I can only imagine how mental the car will be, I'll never genuinelly knock a small block nova again, if you have the funds its the way to do one but very costly.
The engine will be in this year and mapped early next year :)

Edit, replied after watching vid lol

great car :thumb:
Well every part is now with him and he has the next 2 weeks off to get the engine built and in the car.
Actually I think the dry sump tank is yet to arrive but its due this week so that wont hold him up.
Expect some update pics sometime next week
Engine is STILL for sale btw, I will do a advert for it when its removed.

I look forward to those pics JB
Me too !
I just hope he can get the noise down on it for Bedford as it flies round there as it was with half the h/p it will have lol
wow, thats a stunning build. First time I've seen it or heard of it.
must.get.mine.on.track.asap.grrrr
EDIT: just forwarded the vid to my friend with a DC2 which I was meant to attend a trackday with. Caption read 'well that solves that arguement' lol does the guy drive for fun or competitive?
EDIT: and thats a bargin price on the engine and box. My engine alone, in basic parts, was roughly £1200 with out the labour and the tuning 'name'
Cheers Ash, he just does the odd trackday for a laugh and to be fair the car is SO well balanced its just plain fast without driving on the edge everywhere.
I have a better quality version of that clip but its still not great, damn my MOV format camera as I can't seem to edit the videos down without losing all the quality!
sh1t the togs this is unreal! any more piccies of the front suspenion set up?
Which bit do you want better pictures of ?
The bottom arms and brackets ?
If so :

A guaranteed F28 kit has not yet been sorted due to not having a car to develop it on but they did fit Gareths yellows nova without any issues. Obviously I cannot guarantee they would fit all novas running a F28 but it is something eventually I am sure he will look into.
Kits are now tig welded instead of migged together although the welding was excellent anyway.
This may be a bit of thread creep but..
Im very impressed with the video around bedford and Im an avid small block (8v) fan, after seeing that I cant wait to drive mine again now.
Been reading up a lot about the adjustable tca tie bar kit. This is my first evening of posting on threads in five years, over the last few days Ive been busy reading up on all the interesting projects over the years, getting myself back into the scene. I am looking for a few bits for my car. Youre probably aware that over on another thread my good friend novacabrio is busy finishing off my long overdue and ongoing project, what was a track orientated sport, and after a ground up rebuild, and then almost six years of being idle now a nice mix of clean original sport and track car, frankly if Mark continues as I know he will itll be virtually concourse, Cheers Mark.
I am interested to know jonlem, if your friend is interested in splitting the gearbox from the engine? I am interested in the sccr gear set, and how much he would want? I am also interested in the adjustable tca / tie bar set, I have long dreamed of the pilbeam set up and this kit looks very well put together and as good as that kit. What is the lead time if I was to order a kit?
Hi Paul,
Glad to hear you are getting back on with things, like yourself I have been building a car for over 4 years but it IS a car and they are far from the most important things in our lives !
I'm sure Ben will be pleased to hear the nice comments about the video, even more so when I think how poor the quality was of the video I uploaded !
The gearbox on that engine is only a F13 c/r with a altered cwp and a Quaife ATB, the SCCR kit that you may of read is on the spec sheet for the new engine and gearbox.
There is a SCCR box and plate diff on ebay at the moment though for what I would say is sensible money, their not the cheapest things new sadly and so do seem to hold their money to a point.
The tie bar kits are just about ready to go, everything has been laser cut and I know he only has to weld them together (which isn't 5 mins work but were not talking months)
I am seeing him tomorrow though so I will ask when he could knock a set up for you, IMO they are on par with the pilbeam set, ok they do not look identical but they do function the same and there not supplied with the cheap rose joints either and they are ofcourse a LOT less than the Pilbeam setup which was the main reason to offer them to other people.
Drop me a PM with your number and I'll give you a call once I've spoken to him.
A update at last !

I would seriously have trouble removing it from the coffee table, work of art mate, and as for the con-rods, pistons, dry sump, throttle bods, well... i believe someone used a very appropriate term for it all, PORN! i cant wait to have enough cash to build engines to that standard. need to get myself off to uni on a motorsport engineering degree course and get myself a unit like so many folks on here... i could restore cars and rebuild engines all day long til the day i die... sorry for spouting sh1te...!

Its a bit suprising that he didnt start with a s/b 1800 16v engine?... Not that the 1600 isnt going to go well enough lol
His choice was to go down that route mainly as he already had a few parts ordered.

Hewland 6 speed dogbox with F3 spec diff :)
Originally run in the Vectra Challenge cars, based on a F18, nothing like a Quaife dog box, these are a serious bit of kit, some of he machining on the gears is AWESOME,I'll take a good picture of one of the spare gears.
The new Quaife SCCR gearset he has will now be up for sale, its literally as it arrived from Quaife but he's not wanting rrp for it, I'll get some pics and put a advert up later, there may be a ATB diff to go with that too although I think he has a buyer sorted for that.
More updates after Christmas :)

Box looks sweeeeeeeet!

He couldn't resist it, tbh I'd like to think it will save him going through several Quaife ones so longterm it should be a good investment !

Still awaiting a clutch to show up, dry sump tank needs to be mounted and a few brackets made then the bay will get a lick of paint (as it clearly needs it lol) then it will finally go together.
thats a special box :)
Interested to know where the brake pipe holder came from?
I just saw the brake pipe holder too.. I must look in to that.

He made the holders iirc
More updates soon !
Update:
Dry sump tank installed, there are a few more things to sort but it looks like he won't actually need to repaint the bay which is a result as a:it saves time and b: the engine should be in sooner ! :)

more updates this is porn!!!
I think the engine is going in tonight or over the weekend for the trial fit.
I'll get some pics when I am next up there
Another minor update !
Parts ordered and finaly arrived are :
Dry cell race battery
Large shift light to be used as low oil pressure lamp
FSE fuel pump
Cosworth filter
Fuel pump bracket
Heat protective sheets
The throttle body spacers showed up, these are 70mm but you can have them as big or as small as you like, bore size can go upto 52mm and they are designed to be used with Jenveys. If you want some just drop me a PM, they can be used before or after the TB's, obviously if mounted before the ID is different to the intake side of the throttle body if using tapers.
70mm ones work out at £40 each, I believe the ones from Jenvey are £44 + vat each and they are cast so no where near as nice looking.

The engine has been in, its now out with the flywheel and clutch now mounted up, the next time it goes in its staying in but I know its just a decision on the release bearing causing the hold ups.
I will have some fitted shots in the next week or so :)

Tiny update :
The clutch release bearing eventually showed up today and it was for a small block box so back it goes to Helix and hopefully the correct one will be with him on monday.
I popped up today to have a browse at how its going, saw some top secret stuff going on which obviously I can't shed any light on at the this moment but small block owners may well be interested in it is all I can say !
Oil temp and pressure senders now fitted nicely out of the way, spacers and trumpets now all fitted to back plate although that was done after I left. Flywheel and clutch is now fitted as well so its literally a case of the bearing arriving and the engine going straight in ! at long last !

whats the thinking behind the custom rear mount over a standard one ?
The engine is tilted slightly back from normal putting everything level, its minimal but obviously helps with the fitment of the inlet and filter mainly.
fair do's
gearlinkage looks trick aswell ;)

A corsa rear mount would have done the same thing.
Cheers Rick, the mount is very exact to get the gearbox to fit and stuff like that so a Corsa one probably wouldn't of been a direct fit either.

amazing. love this =)
The car has run the Hockley box since it was first built with great results, brakes have never been a issue on the car although like anything it may be one of the modifications he chooses to do in the future if he ends up on a massive weight saving diet. The car is already in the 600's, I forget the actual weight although the gearbox will of added some weight compared to the F13.
Took your advice on the battery lol ;)

I do seriously love this car though, convince him it needs to get sub 600kgs though ;)
I would imagine that the car will be further developed after a while, for now I think its just a case of wanting to see it together asap and on track getting used in anger.
I have no doubt that every little helps when it comes to weight but also finding the exact suspension/geometry setup seems to be a task that others struggle with, I wouldn't say anyones cars currently or in the past have handled to perfection, most people I speak to are always mentioning slight handling issues and I think thats where Ben really wants to spend some time ( and money if it needs it) perfecting it as realistically it should have more than enough power. I'm not saying it will handle like a go kart or be perfect but I know it did hold on superbly well before so he must atleast be somewhere in the right area.
More updates soon, the car should (weather permitting) be at PV on the VS stand but it won't be running by then but I'm sure a few people will fancy a look round it.

any updates..? need some inspiration..
Sadly not, He's been a bit busy doing other things and now his work are rebuilding their office so all the files and units are under the ramp his car is on.
I believe he is going up there tomorrow though which I assume is to crack on with some more bits.
Certainly not a lot to do now, just finding the time to do it !
I believe he's concentrating on getting the new tca's made for it so he can have the shafts made as thats probably the biggest job that needs sorting, after that its some hoses and some wiring and that should be about it, oh exhaust but basically not a hell of a lot to do.

just read this from the begining and wow this car is awsome :) tell your mate to keep up the good work
Well there would of been a update tonight but although he can build a good car he cannot use a pc to save his life LOL
Update pics on wednesday although I'm told its not a massive one.
Some parts are off being anodised at the minute, new coilovers are on, new wider track tca's are on.
No doubt I'll have a better idea of where he is with things when he brings his camera over.
Well a late update, Bens been mega busy doing other bits over the last few months and a revamp at his work meant the ramp was blocked in for several months so the car hasn't seen the usual weekly love and attention it usually has !
So as per usual I'll just let the pictures do the talking, any questions I'll do my best !
Some of these pictures are out of order as these are off his camera not mine so apoligies for that.

I have to say it appears tucked up against that dry sump quite well, for road clearance.. something ill be trying to do with the same manifold.. (SBD/BTB..?)

The bracket is to support the rear of the manifold, a bit like a oe xe one has ;)
It is the BTB/SBD one, fits wet sump engines, he did have a Bowyer developed Tony Law manifold but it didn't fit with the dry sump pump mounted on the front so he sold that.
Phil, the spacers are 75mm iirc, then 90mm trumpets, then the tb casing and then the manifold so a fair bit lol I'll get you a exact measurement if you like.
Thanks for all the nice comments, he does have a look on here and appreciates eveyones opionion. :thumb:

wow great build this one, looking forward to seeing it finished
do you know where he got the new stickers for the wheels from? couple of mine could do with getting refurbed soon. cheers

My origonal plan was to run with a 'sausage' air filter.
If you see by the pic it just wont fit due to fuel rail.
I was thinking of using the spacer between the throttle body & trumpet, then i will get clearance for a filter.
What does it do to engine performance having a longer inlet?

Hi Martin,
A longer inlet tract will usually gain you some torque, were not talking a lot but obviously its another way of getting a little, in your case it has 2 benefits as you will get over your clearance issues.

Will have a little measure up of what i may need if i see the car this weekend.
Longer inlet - Would it need a remap or doesnt it make enough difference?
Cheers
No that I'm aware of, new dash will be ordered today, doing the Aeroquip order for him this week and having one of my swirl pots altered as he wants a -6 feed not -8, once all that arrives there will be a fair bit to get on with.

Small update
All the dry sump lines are done, the tanks are back from being powder coated, they were going to be anodised but they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't react with where the tanks are welded so opted not to do them that way.
Part of the fuel system is in, all located behind the drivers seat.
The Roose hoses showed up as well so he has got all those fitted.

Project.............Just a myth that you have a Nova project on the go.
Saw some pictures you sent me years ago that were 'obviously' a photoshop!
Allegidely there 'was' a wee project Dave was working on, but that was years ago!

Them black wheels he had on, what make and size are they?

Agree. The standard of prep is awesome. Mant track cars are thrown together with function in mind, but for anyone with OCD that likes going fast on track this ticks all the boxes.
me like a lot.
Cheers for the comments guys, should be finished the other side of Christmas !
As for the wheels I think they are Speedlines iirc, I'll find out the size but believe they were ET49
New brakes arrived today, they are the Harry Hockley Grp A Alcons, should stop it well enough :d
Not much else has been done on the car since before Christmas but he is hoping to have it finished by the end of February.

ooh youll be wanting to paint them first eh?
Cheers guys !
I think the Wilwoods are going on his mates car and no the calipers won't be getting painted lol
The only annoying thing is that the brakes won't fit inside the Grp A wheels he has so looks like they will be going up for sale.
Any idea how much camber/caster he was running when the top mounts are at this position?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Bens%20Nova/Engine%20build/DSC00964.jpg
The main adjustment is made with the adjustable tca's and tie bars, I have no idea what the geomerty is set to though sorry.

has he finished the rocker cover yet ???
Just read this from page 1, the parts used, the parts made, the parts bought are all mega top quality, and the way the it's all brought together is astounding to me,
hope to see the finished car soon.

Not yet but hopefully it will be done soon !
Caliper brackets and bells are off to get anodised this week, then the old black wheels are being dipped and powder coated as the Grp A ones won't fit over the brakes :(

that rocker will look lovely wouldnt mind 1 myself lol
Well I'd imagine another could be done but judging on the time this was is taking I can only hope you wouldn't be in a hurry for it LOL
Bells and brackets are back from being anodised blue.
No other updates until next week though.

Excellent build with all the right bits.
Made a similar cover for my c16xe, also made one for brosters :)

I like that, have you welded that then smoothed off the welds ?
Thats basically what he is doing with the current one until the billet one is finished.
I'll show him that pic though, Cheers :)

just a idea but you could cut the two posts down a touch so you could a make plug cover.so that the cover would sit flush

I did is basically like your mate has but used a thicker piece of alumium then polished it all.
I also made a bit of a jig to try and stop it from moving when welding.
Cool, I believe that was the problem he had when welding it but then it was his 1st go with the alloy tigset.
Looks good though mate !

Was looking into getting it anodized but not sure about the silicone content of the cover?
Ben was having all his tanks anodised but they wouldn't chance it due to that so he had them powder coated instead.
I'd imagine with a lot of messing around you could make the 16xe one look great but the problem is, as you pointed out trying to keep the thing from warping with the heat.
Well finally a bit of a update.
New brakes are fitted, custom exhaust is finished, wiring and a few other bits done, just the shafts, cam cover and a few minor bits to finish so with any luck it will be finished by the end of this month and mapped shortly after.
