Hi,

I always like to have a winter project to give me something to do over the cold dark evenings.
This year i decided it was time to give the engine bay a bit of attention so it was engine out time.
Engine came out week last Saturday.

Here are a few pics.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/DSC02767.jpg

So that was it engine was out.
Just needed to get the car home by a tow rope!!
Towed it about half a mile behind my dads Vivaro van & the tow rope snapped!!
Had to leave car in a not so nice part of Telford and go find a garage for a new tow rope!

One hooked back up i thought my dad would tow me down a nice straight road for the 10 mile trip home.

NO!
He thought the twisty 'B' road would be better as less traffic.
For those who have towed before, being about 6ft from the back of a Vivaro van that you cant see past down a twisty 'B' road wasnt my idea of fun.

To say i was glad to get it home an understatment.
Think next time i will either get a solid bar to tow or hire a trailer!

Anyway i will keep you informed of my progress or lack of it shortly.

Cheers

Martin

The engine is going back to Tim Adams who built the engine first time around for a freshen up.
He is sourcing me Jenvey TB's and i believe an Emerald Ecu.

I have a Gell Odysey battery to go in & plan on removing the firewall.
Will keep you posted as & when i get my ass in gear and do something!

Done a bit of work today whilst the mrs was sale shopping!

Firstly I needed to get the dash out so i could remove the loom to the Weber Altha for the carbs.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/DSC02779.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/DSC02783.jpg

Think the wiring may need a sort out. Alot of things no longer used that need removing.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/DSC02782.jpg

Heater never worked properly, so ripped this out to save some space behind the dash, and save weight also.

Next job was start to remove the firewall.
Spot-Weld drill was blunt so just drilled through to remove as neat as i could.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/DSC02797.jpg

Engine went to the builders on Saturday. Whilst i was there he had this on the dyno.
It made 520Bhp and 400+ lbs of torque.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/DSC02775.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/DSC02777.jpg

My little vauxhall will feel a little puny around all these engine pruducing 500+ Bhp!!

When i get more done i will post some more pics.

Cheers

I'm the same Keith, I like how it smoothes off the look of the bay and it means you can hide the ugly stuff away. But from a practicality point of view...

That picture is Rick Drapers engine not mine.
I have just ordered one though.
It comes from Swindon Engines.
Be warned though it isnt the cheapest thing in the world for what it is.

No its quite extorsionate, for what you get. Its just a machined piece of Delrin at the end of the day.

First time iv seen car looks great love the digital dash, Are the rear lights tinted, if so are they bought or did you do it yourself and iv always wanted to remove the firewall but people have said it could take strengh away from the shell i take it the isnt true. Cant wait to see it all back together again

Hi

Not much more progress, but have now got a small race Gell battery that i'am going to re-locate inside the car.
Also got a bulkhead fitting for the battery cable & coil to so i can also re-locate inside the car.

didn't realise you can gt HT lead extensions like that!

What's the reason for re-locating the coil inside the car? does it lose any strength of signal the further away/longer the lead?

Benn

Only reason for re-locating the coil is to try to neaton up the engine bay.

MARTIN KELSON

It does have some welding done already.
When Dave France (Fearless) did the engine conversion he added plating kit & welded turrets etc.

Just thought as i'am now needing to paint engine bay i may as well weld some more.

Dolly is just on the front.

As for how smooth.
Not going to the extreme the VW boys go.
Just a tidy up really and thats it.

I'am on a deadline so dont want to create to much work.

Booked to take Nova to Le-Mans so need it back on road by about May time so i can put some miles on it.
I know thats sounds a long way off, but i work along way from where the car lives so dont get alot of time to mess with it.

Picked up my catch tank, header tank & strut brace earlier that has been re-polished and also a few bolts etc that were zinc plated and chromed.

As & when i get any more progress i will stick some pics up.

A bit more progress yesterday.
My mate came round to look at the rats nest of electrics and run the headlight / indicator wiring etc inside the wing to neaten it up.

Bit more work to do but need engine in to power up the electrics to see what works or doesnt as the case maybe!!

Hopefully its of to paint with Ade Culley next Friday then i really start making progress and getting it back together.

Stu decided to run the cable through into the wing from inside the car so it wont enter the bay until behind the headlight to keep it looking neat. Top job as always he did.

As for PVS, unfortunatly unlikely.
I'am booked (and the Nova hopefully) on a ferry bound for Le-Mans 24hr race the week later, so will either frantically trying to get car finished or scoring brownie points with the mrs before i leave!!

Right not much happened recently as i've been waiting for engine builder to dyno the engine then drop it off to be lifted onto its mounts.

To say i had a high then followed by a low was an understatment. The high being it managed 228bhp on Mr Toovey's dyno, the low founding out its not got the throttle bodies on i asked for.
Thats being sorted and the individual bodies pointing up so i can fit a filter or air box if required should soon be on.

Anyhow been today to where car is for a look and here are a few pics.

Unfortunatly now as its just over 3 weeks till i'am off to Le-Mans i've made the decision the Nova wont be going. Instead i will take my Golf GTI derv, which in one aspect wont be bad as i can sit back in the Recaro leather with the climate & a CD on instead of a numb ass, stinking of fuel in a noisy Nova!
Gutted though as was really looking forward to taking Nova on a road trip.

If anybody wants some brand new Jenvey twin bodies and inlet manifold, only run on dyno let me know!!

Its pretty mild spec.
It was built 4-5yrs back and just been re-opened up to check everything is still ok.
Put some new bearings in but everything else was sweet.

It has some mild Piper (if i remeber correctly) cams, pocketed pistons, bit of head work & thats about it.

you can use one from a ecotec engine but it has to be from the 2.0l, dont use a 1.4/1.6 etc one as i know on the mbe management they burn out your ecu ignition amplifier, may be ok with other brands but not sure

Doesn't it depend if the coilpack is amped or not as if they aren't amped the ECU has to do all the work?

do you run the mbe management?
the one i was told to use was the 2.0 vectra one with the 4 wires but only 3 get used as the others are different and will eventually burn out the ecu amplifier,

so id check and make sure yours is amped will as it could be costly having to buy a new ecu

I'm not running mbe no. Not running anything at the mo! lol Was just what I'd read thats all, which made sense as an amped coil saves the ecu having to do it which means the ecu won't get as hot!

Martin, have you got any decent close up pics of how the linkage attaches please? My R1s are linked up like those bodies but are set up so the cable sticks up between the bodies rather than in from the side and I'd be intrigued to see if it would be easily adapted to my setup.

First job was to remove the incorrect throttle bodies. New ones are 'apparently' on order.
Really didnt want to be messing doing this after it was all set up on dyno, but never saw the engine before it went to dyno or could have sorted this out before.

Hello,

Well Stu has been working solidly last few days on the old girl.

About 5.30 last night it was time to see if it would start!

Fire extinguishers at the ready we pressed the button. Engine turned over, few blips of throttle and it fired up for the first time in a year!!

Few small fuel leaks from the goodridge fuel hoses, just need a tweak with a spanner & should be ok.

Didnt want to idle too well & the Stack was light for low oil pressure so turned it off.
I then remembered i hadnt set the throttle pot or idle screw on the throttle bodies so that should be why it didnt want too idle.
Looking at the Stack its reading -99 so that 'should' just be a oil pressure sensor problem & not an engine problem.

Sorted a few more things then about 7.30 before time to call it a day tried to start it again after setting throttle pod and idle as per SBD with the voltmeter.

Battery then flat & no jump leads, charger or jumper pack to start it, wheeled it back into garage!!

Everything is looking good, Stu has a couple of things to sort on the alarm to get pin switches working & central locking, wire up Fiat Uno wiper then loom it all up with special tape to make it look pretty.

Then viola get the old girl back.

Cheers

Martin

Sweet :) Bet Stu's happy!

He will be happy when its not stuck in has garage anymore!!

Think he was pleased with all the wiring work & taking the lights loom through inner wing now that it all worked.

Did have an issue with rear brake light not working. I checked the bulb, obviously but not very well!!! Stuck new bulb in after bit of head scratching and hey presto.

Hear you popped down yesterday morning. Just missed you i think.

Right popped over Stu's yesterday where the car is living at the moment whilst he works his magic on the wiring.

Started it up to get to temperature to make sure everything is ok, fan kicking in, no leaks etc.

All seems fine.

Took a small video of my camera below.

Sounds familiar! lol

Is it on an MBE basemap mate? Mine would pop like that as it's over fueling, might need to fiddle more with the Throttle Potentiometer (think thats what its called) as they can adjust easy by them self! and get the air flow meeter on them to balance them, as this helps no end! :thumb:

MARTIN KELSON

I like the sound of the popping.
Wanted it to pop some flames, but sadly not!!

Its on MBE but was mapped on the incorrect throttle boddies.
Set the throttle pot up as per SBD with the voltmeter, when its all back together properly i will book it onto the rollers to get them set up again with these bodies on & set fuel regulator up.

Was just pleased to hear it run & idle nicely to be honest!

Am i missing something? What you on about??

As for the fan wiring Peester. I dont run a Vauxhall fan, i run a Pacet. Its not controlled by the MBE. It uses its own thermerstat, he was on about running it through one of the outputs also on the alarm so when i activate that if its still above temperature it will stay running for an alloted time.

Hello all,

Well got the old girl back yesterday afternoon.
Big thanks to Stu for working wonders on the wiring.

All headlight & indicator wiring now runs through the near side inner wing, Fuse box removed & re-located, 'shelf' made to house the ecu, power steering ecu, alarm control box etc.

Here are a few pics now its back.

Behind where the fuse box used to live is the power steering electric motor & 'disco lights' control box.

Need to sort a few things out now. Its a pig to start then when you blip the throttle when it finally does start it tries to die.
The fuel regulator needs setting & after swapping the throttle bodies i need to balance them.
Hopefully those two things are what are making it hard to start.
Need to get it upto rolling road i suppose & get it sorted asap.

Keep us updated with the starting/running issue Martin.

Ordered a fuel pressure gauge from SBD today that screws into the pressure regulator.
As long as it arrives i will be going to mum & dads Friday evening to have a tinker in the garage.
Hoping the pressure is off the scale & its overfueling making the thing hard to start as its flooding itself.

If its not will call engine builder to get around & sort it out.

Hi Alan

Sorry for the delay but only just seen your question.

Both were from Demon Tweeks.
I actually never used the coil one, as when i had the throttle boddies fitted it now has a coil pack & not a coil, so if your interested i'am going to sell it or stick it on the bay.
Drop me a pm if interested.

P.S.
Not much happened to car recently. Waiting for engine builder to come around as throttle boddies need setting after they were swapped.

Next job is brakes as last time i drove the car they were cr*p. Not looking forward to this as i hate messing with this bias pedal box.

Hello,

As there had been very little progress recently due to waiting for engine builder / mapper to come round & sort my non start issues out i hadnt posted anything.

Well this afternoon they came round. Tim Adams who built it & John Toovey who mapped it both came to take a look.
Not really sure what the main problem was, i need to re-earth the engine as that was weak, he also advised as battery was re-located to under the seat i'am best running another earth from the battery direct to the engine as well as the earth from the terminal to the shell.
As soon as we were cranking the voltage was dropping too much, earthed it with a jump lead & finally got it to go.
John did his thing with the laptop, no idea what he was doing other than adjusting the fuel for start up.
One spark plug wasnt happy, so popped to local motor factors, got new set of four and now its as happy as larry!

Took if for a quick shakedown around the block a few times and all seems ok. Gearlinkage needs adjusting again as not happy with 1st, 3rd etc but other than that it was nice to get behind the wheel again.

Next job is to do the earths & hopefully pick heated screen up Wednesday so will have that to get done.

Noticed too some dents appeared in my roof, probably due to sticking stuff on it when cover is on, so need to get dent man around to work his magic, then another bleed of brakes & time to get it MOT'd

Happy days :)

Looking good Martin!....... Make sure you use someone who has an excellent reputation for paintless dent removal as done incorrectly on a dark colour like yours could potentially be bad news. Im sure Ade culley should be able to point you in the right direction as Im sure his shop will draft someone in the same as we do etc.
