how vital are these?
also does any 1 know what they should be for 1.8 cav?

Usually 0.8mm on 8v's.

Too big a gap & the ign system gets overloaded trying to jump the gap. Too small & the spark may not ign the mixture effectively.

The voltage required from the coil is much higher with a big gap & the result is either a poor spark or the coil & ign amplifier overheat & shutdown.
