just slow acceleration, gentle steering and no braking.

Spot weld drills at the ready! And an angle grinder. I had mine off in a few hours and my mate welded the new one on in half an hour or so. Used a ratchet strap and a brace between the engine/gearbox mounts just to keep everything in place.

4 hours? What did you use, a hacksaw? Lol! I had mine off in no time, infact I ripped the front panel off with my hands (with gloves) it was soo fooked! I've got loads of pics of mine if you need any help, it is pretty straight forward though. Weld around the extra plates that are only spot welded on around the tie bar brackets fixing points and also the cross member to front panel join as again these are only spotwelded on! I also got the Harry Hockley plates and got them welded on.

Is it easy enought to weld a new one on if the engine is still in? and do you really have to brace it beforehand?

Andy
12-12-08, 05:36 PM
My engine was in,i never braced it.No problems at all.

brainsnova
12-12-08, 05:39 PM
you only need to lift the front wheels up for unbloting the tie and anti roll bar fixings bars brackets.

Andy
12-12-08, 05:41 PM
Dont even need to do that.Unbolt them as they are then push them down

If you see that rust hole on the left its cracked from there right down and underneith

I know whats ya mean mate i can see your logic there i just couldnt resist.

I had my tie bar mount rip itself out of the cross member on one of my old novas, she was terminally rotten bless her i drove it to a mates garage to strip the old girl and had over a quarter of a turn on the steering wheel just to hold a straight line!

Ah noway well im lucky mine isnt that bad. i would of taken pics but its far to cold outside for me. but wish i seen it before i paid to have the tracking done lol

brainsnova

just take it back and say the steering doesnt feel right.

To which they will stick it on a ramp have a look under it and say "thats cos your rotbox car is falling to bits" and chances are depending where he got it done they will refuse to give the car back to him as its in a dangerous condition, so not a particularly good idea tbh lol

Didn't grind it all back, only an inch around the weld areas, the important bit was inside the boxed section and where the two pressed sheets are spot welded to form the actual crossmember, that's where the rot will set in and in time be the point of failure

Just out of interest why did you leave your car there and go home if it were just to have the tracking done?

It only takes minutes to do and does not involve a road test at all, ive had four wheel alignment done on a few of my cars and have usually been in and out in around thirty minutes!
