View Full Version : Frozen car!
Washed me nova yesterday after the karting trip and it was freezing last night.
Came out just to go to work and cant open the fecking doors!
Can get the key in but it wont unlock.
Tried squirting de-icer round the door edges - in the lock and even tried a fecking hairdryier but to no avail.
Boots solid as well
Cars at the front of the house so no sun - its minus 4.
Anyone any ideas on how to de-ice it?!?
warm to hot tap water, pour it over the lock with your key half in the barrel, that should get to everywhere, but try turning it whilst doing it
Then the same around your door :thumb:
Been doing it to mine for the last few days lol

Try a heat gun around the door edges and the lock.
Failing that aim a propane heater at it.
cut the handbrake cable then push it into the sun :D
our house is north facing too so gets no sun on the driveway, when the VX freezes up its a bitch to get into... hot water on the locks, then have to push it into the sunny bit and leave it to defrost.
COLD water on the door might work
got to be careful putting hot water on the glass tho because it could crack
Yeah, dont put hot water on, just between warm and hot does the trick
Babies milk bottle kinda temp i mean

when my locks freeze i warm the key with a lighter and they put it in the lock and twist it
but if the doors are frozen shut cant you just yank the door like i had to do a few times with the old punto
Could damage the rubber bed/gasket thingy (cant think what its called lol ) though if the frost is severe

i would try it i mean how much can a rubery door seal /bed thing cost if it goes wrong lol
Dont have a propane heater
Not trying heat gun as I'll damage paint (used hairdryer instead)
Tried the "warm" water in the key 1/2 insterted - no good
Dont wanna force the door incase rubber rips or damage door.
The next bus to the train station isnt till 1pm - supposed to start work at 12pm
Boss is off sick just now so my try and pull a fast one.
lol
assuming you left the heaters on hot from the last time you could start the engine from under the bonnet and let it de-frost its self that way

Yeah, how do they do that :) .
My door was a bit frozen this morning, but remote locking solves that pesky lock problem.
Oh and the windscreen, really had to put some mustle into scraping the ice off.
Heater is about as good as holding a lighter to the windscreen
Burgo, how d'you do that?piece of piss on an old carb motor. check its out of gear first. then run a live to the coil and then use a jump lead to power the starter motor.....job done
What i was going to say burgo.
The Celica had a sheet of thick formed ice over the screen this morning. Didn't take too long to melt off though, the heaters are good on that.
Can't wait to get a heated screen on the Nova though, will have to contact the seller about that this afternoon!

Aperture seal/weatherstrip/doorseal lol
Any joy getting into your car yet ade, could you not use one of the many really easy ways to break into your car?
I have to open the boot and climb in through the boots and unlock my doors from the inside. then give them a good pull from the outside. :)

well the cable must go somewhere in the engine bay of the car, presumabley underneath somewhere so whats wrong with gripping it with a pair of mole grips or plyers and popping ot that way? :D
Dave it goes around the back of the bay along the bulk head.
eather pop out the grill or get underneath with a hooked pole or somthing.
Or just do it from underneath as there is a fair bit of clearance on a non-lowered nova and the starter is low down at the back of the engine and reachable from underneath:thumb:
you can reach the bonnet latch from under the car ;)
I would have thought going through the boot would have been easier, or is the passenger door any easier to get into?

Oi thats not very nice:cry:

Only boiling water will, hot water from the tap wont.
And to stop glass refrezzing as you drive, spray the glass with glass cleaner.
It stops it refrezzing.
De ice is bad for paint too.

I'm confussed, Key in the lock?:wtf:
Some cars that arent quite as sexual as yours have little eyesores just under the door handles you have to use the ignition key in the same manner as the ignition itself to get into the car lol

heat the key up so its nice and warm (read hot) and then put it into the lock, thereby warming the lock up through some physics sh1t i dont really understand. mmmkay?

My drivers door lock is fubarred on the LOLvo, so I have to use the bootlock lol
The amount of times I reverse against a wall or something and then cant lock the car!
Oh dear what is it with you and cars lee ffs lol
The Lolvo of fail eh:thumb:
lol at this thread!
finally managed to get into the car - it just got to a point where the passenger door came open. 2 hours late for work though.
Hmmm youre a crafty man ade how about grafting some kind of heated washer jet heating elements into your door locks with a perm live switch outside the car so you could activate it from outside a few minutes before you intend getting into the car to ensure this isnt an issue again?
Sounds like you could do with something like this owing to the extreme cold spell youre having!

No willy waving. You can buy the kits for as cheap as 30notes now so theres no reason not to get one, it adds a but more secrety to the car and it looks alot better. Plus i never unlock mine till i'm about to pullthe door handle up. "Remote brigade" is fantastic tho cant see why everyone hasnt good it by now.

Washers inside the doors? Does rust freeze? lol
Nah screw that, run heater lines in the tops of the doors, this will melt the ice and burn any thieth that grab the top of the doors.
Ooh meow jack, not forgetting you own one of these wonderful rust buckets aswell haha!
I mean to see if he could remove the heating element bit from some heated jets and add that to the lock barrel inside the door so as to warm it and thaw it internally, would take a fe minutes to take effect but depending on the placement/efficiency of the elements there is no reason as to why that idea shouldnt work imo:thumb:
