Does anyone know if a saloon (Better RJ?) makes a better track car than a hatch or is it the other way round?
I know a saloon will be havier but is it better balanced with that wieght at the back to counter the weight of the engine?
Has it been done already?

I think this would be a good idea.

Would have to be a redtop or 2ltr 8v engine in it thought as it would have to make an impresion :)

The saloon is stiffer, not sure if its much heavier.

lol

There's a couple saloon track cars being built. Plus, saloons are more aerodynamic :p

I met a bloke who rallied a saloon back in the eighties. he reckoned the rear end was much stiffer than on the hatch, the extra weight at the rear also helped with balance.

Not sure if you can get tweed crash helmets though, try www.demontweeds.co.uk (http://www.demontweeds.co.uk)

I think you would struggle to tell the difference between a saloon and a hatch of exactly the same spec would you not? so i can't see it makes that much difference?

I know for a fact that a MK2 Jetta was better than a Golf.

Id be willing to believe the loon was marginally better than a hatch because of that. By how much though I wouldnt know.

Jack

The weight difference is only about 5kgs in favour of the hatch anyway. They boots are surprisingly light.

In theory, assuming it's not caged up, I'd put my money on the saloon definately. With a cage involved it's probably still got the edge but how noticeable it'd be I wouldn't like to say

I'd love to build one but have niether the money nor the time. Look forward to seeing one though. :thumb:

Someone should deffo do a 'loon track monster.
Especially seeing how the 4 dr ones are cheap to find in good condition too

I will do when he updates his bastid project thread! lol

But that wont happen will it if he wants a RST? :p

ithink the 'loon a que' is a barbie made out of the boot of a saloon...... for use at events

Is that the new 'Burgo option' funk the novas and buy a RST lol surely not...

less than the van, maybe 750kg if a base model.

Really?!?!? How come? the van just has metal pannels instead of windows and no rear trim. Is it the bolt in floor and bulk head?

burgo

my bog standard 1.2 merit saloon weighs 760kg, print out to prove aswell.

mowgli the one at billing isnt the track day one altho the track day one should be that low aswell.

adam i will update one day lol

as for the original question i beleave the only real benefit is that they are better aerodynamicly, also they look much better which onviously matters to a track weapon

it has got something to do with the DIESEL ENGINE weighing much more

what with the interior in aswell!!! i have no back seats no spare wheel all that tar sh*t has been remooved all the underlay has been remooved and just the top layer off carper put back and that weighs 740kgs!!!

burgo
30-11-08, 01:25 PM
yes its thats with everything in it. you'll notice that 760kgs is also the haynes quote'd weight

The Simps

will hopefully find out next spring :)

As burgo has said, the boot should help aerodynamically to keep the back end stable. I think the loon wouldmake a better front mount rwd than a hatch too.

jesus man where did all the extra weight in the hatch come man as i said i striped allmost everything from my sr and its 20 kg's lighter lol

burgo
01-12-08, 03:29 PM
sr's have extra sound deadening. plus maybe bigger brakes, anti-roll bars and all sorts. does yours have a sun roof aswell as they are funking heavy

If I were to start again I'd use a 'loon shell. chop the majority of the boot floor out and use the length for a nice diffuser, small wing on top of the hatch and I reckon some decent drag reduction and downforce could be generated :)

The Simps
01-12-08, 08:21 PM
I just wanted one because they're easier to slam! lol :thumb:

Do they? I've never found sound deadening differs from model to model.

Oh sorry, thought you ment the air ones in the pillar.
Dash wise, yeah real merit ones only have the 2 center ones.
