for years now iv been wanting to get back into riding bikes. the main reason is to become fit and active again and will also be good to ride to work and back when i cant be bothered driving and wasting petrol. the problem is tho i dont want the novelty to wear off and for it to get unused and forgotten about.

anybody off here who regularly rides? is it boring? and i am aware being winter it isnt the best of ideas.

iv been wanting a road bike and have always had my eye on a scott one priced at £549. just had a quick browse on the bay and for around £500 theres quite a lot of decent bikes for sale.

its been about 7 years since i was mad into bikes and even tho i still have my mountain bike, it hasnt been used for years (the gears are knackered). whats still good and whats not? when i was younger XT was the stuff to go for and always been a fan of scott, koni, orange. anything other than specialized really. is this still the case?

liking these at the mo:

and i think this is the model iv always been looking at:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Scott-Speedster-S40-27-sp-2008-Road-Bike_W0QQitemZ300275761171QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Bi kes_GL?hash=item300275761171&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1298%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318

i wouldnt mind something bright and cool but i went to a bike shop months ago and the ones i fancied cost 4k+ lol

suggestions/comments/banter welcome...

What's the matter with Specialized?

I've rode these for years both on and off road.

Currently have an E5 road bike and an M4 mountian bike, also have a Woodman Trials bike for messing about on.

My work Experience was in a bike shop and worked there for 6 years, cycling was my life until cars cam around. Got back into at the start of last year, and was as fit then as I've ever been.

If you are considering it, go for it. Nothing to loose.

Some vids of me doing trials:

iv never known whats wrong with them, just never been a fan. saying that tho, that road bike does look quite nice tbh. how much did that set you back?

is £500 a good enough budget? i dont want anything super decent but also dont want anything crap. mostly i want a decent, very light frame. and also, are all road bikes 24"?

L33 LEG

ps. looks like you've some skills. but again, iv never been a fan of trial bikes Lol. when i was 15/16, all my mates were crazy about it. all i was bothered about was riding as far as i could and as fast as i could. just a shame i had to stop for an hour at every frikin bench we came across lol

I paid £600 second hand for it. Was £2.5k new in 2004.

Depends if you have to include winter clothing, shoes, pedals etc as this would affect the decency of the bike you would get. £500 for a couple of year old 2nd hand bike will get you a cracker though.

No, don't know why 24" has been mentioned as road bike frames are measured in centimetres. All road bike wheels are 700c though.

You should get yourself measured for a bike before you buy though as there's quite a science to it unlike choosing a Mountian Bike. You may even have to get a different length of handlebar stem to suit your reach. Google for sizing for a road bike for further info, you'll be surprised as too how in depth it goes.

Trials was something I done on days in between big rides and for a laugh. Would often squeeze in 35 to 50miles a night after work.

Had to have a few days rest while this healed after an off on the trials bike though.

iv no idea why i said 24", i think i must had seen it on an ad and it stuck to my mind Lol. the question should of been, is there different sizes, as im quite small even tho when i had a cannondale road bike years ago i did manage fine and i was a lot shorter then.

clothing? il just be buying some shoes and gloves tbh lol maybe i should look into things a little bit more. i always get moments when i want one and then i spend my money on cars instead, hopefully this time il go one step further and actually buy one!

Shaun_O'Donnell

If it's a 24" frame, that's 61cm which is pretty big. I'm 5ft 8" and I ride a 52cm frame if that's any guidance. Best try a few for size in a shop first.

You can't ride a road bike with baggy clothes, especially one about £500 in value, it's just wrong. You could easily spend a couple of hundred on shoes, pedals, thermal tights & vest, jersey, waterproof, gloves, helmet and hat. But this stuff will last years unless you fall off often. I've had all my gear for 12 years and it's still in great condition. Needless to say it's all Specialized (worked for a Specilized Dealer).

L33 LEG
27-11-08, 03:00 PM
ye it wasnt 24" at all. the sizes iv seen range from 52-56cm. il pop into my local shop and test the sizes out. il also check out the clothing and take that into account :)

cheers anyway for the help, and il also check out specialized aswell! il let you know how i get on, if you see one of my cars on coilovers next month ul know that i havnt bought one just yet tho lol

Friend of mine bought a (brand new!) hardtail specialized. Rode it about two/three times a few years back, never used it since. It was about twice as heavy as my hardtail Palisades and even heavier than my FS Rock Springs!

I used to ride everywhere, that changed as soon as I got a car. I went thru a phase of putting the bike in the back of the celica (massive boots ftw) and taking it places, but not really ridden properly for years.

I was going to get back into it, but feck it - I pay £45 a year to use the gym on the base, thats a hell of a lot cheaper than a bike and they have a shedload more (brand new!) equipment than just cycling machines lol

seems strange how everybody i know with a nova was into push bikes before they were driving ! lol

i was into downhill/jump , trials and bmx from the ages of 12-17.got into mountain biking uk magazine a few times aswell!

had an AZONIC DS1, various ONZA'S, and a DK bmx.

spent 1000's and 1000's on bikes , wansnt a single penny wasted tho , loved it!!!

Ahh cycleing... about 10 min before you go out for a ride, you wont want too, you'll want to sit down with a beer and do nothing, but once your out, you never want to come back in, especially in the winter, i find i can ride for much longer in the winter than in summer. even though i'm riding a downhill rig which is just the worst thing to ride on the road with, i still love it. lol

Get a bike! try www.evanscycles.co.uk (http://www.evanscycles.co.uk) some nice ones on there.

Personally I found road riding too boring & it didnt capture my attention.

My road bike I spent fook loads on ended up being flogged for a pittance after it sat in my shed for a couple years with the tyres perishing & latex tubes gone flat.

Mountain biking on the other hand is far more capturing, better views, still makes you fit & gets you out the house & filthy.

I was looking at new bikes yesterday. MARIN Indian Fire Trail is looking nice these days. My current MTB is a retro style old steel hardtail, no suspension with mainly XTR & XT bits & weighs just a shade over 23lb.

It has a aluminium Saracen frame painted with a flip pearl (whity pinky sort of colour, looks ace ripping it down a hill!)
Grime C2 discs front and rear with Jagwire cables and Tioga levers.
Truvativ Hussefelt crank and pedal arms with single speed conversion on rear.
DMR jump seat, lightweight aluminium seat post.
Vuelta R00i rims (downhill, anti snakebite) with Tioga factory DH 2.10r tyres.
Tioga light weight bars and stem.
Team MAD comp trials forks.

Very light and well balanced bike. (9kg total weight)

Started to get back into a bit of xc mountain biking this year, got a full susp. Carrera a couple of years ago but spunked out on a rock shox recon with remote lock out, mavic rim with deore hub (could do with a better hub really) and giant hydraulic discs (2nd hand) in the summer and it's become a pretty handy bit of kit. Will be getting a matching rim for the back soon and it'll be pretty sorted, pics when its dry.

can anybody find me a bike for around £400? i think i want something that i cant afford though to be honest, im VERY picky...

I have mountainbike at the moment which is great fun on the local forrest trails but to bo honest with the gearing, the weight and front suspension is a royal pain cycling on roads.

I have been thinking about getting a road bike for a while now because, in my opinion its like 'grown up' cycling. If i got a road bike like one of those, could I strap a set of panniers to the side and go for a weekend jolly or are they not stable enough for that? Also, Is it a good idea to buy secondhand?

I have never even had a go on a roadbike before because I always thought they were gay, I will probably fall off at the first pot hole.

nothing wrong with second hand. the majority of ones for sale have only been used a few times. alot of people probably have phases like me and go out and buy a brand new one. keep it in a garage for a year and then sell it on.

and the first time i went on one, would of been 16. it was weird for a few minutes and felt a bit unstable but then when you get on a long road it is amazing, feel SO much better than mountain bikes. used to have a speedo thing on mine, was quite fun seeing how fast you could go lol

I'm a roadie,or leg shaving brigade as spudly call's us. lol i love my road bike, had it for a few yr's now, slowly built it up over that time. it would cost me over £3k to replace.

Scott frame
Mavic Ksyrium SL wheel's
Dura ace and ultegra component's.

Have a cheap mountain bike and a Mongoose Bmx for messing about/ Falling off regularly.
