By god! No comparison.

Both were launched at approximately the same time, yet one is blessed with lots of technology, the other almost specced as if it came from the arc.

I dont like 2.0 valvers in Novas, but you need a good reason not to put one in IMO.

Twincam all the way unless you are trying to keep a GTE/GSi factory.

And about the same in kilo's lol

8 extra valves, 1 extra cam, larger clutch, physically bigger box etc etc

Agreed the XE is an ok engine but I think the 8v lump is fantastic.

best of both worlds, cav sri 130 engine

Power potential from the 1600 isnt very much & will nearly bankrupt you getting the output that an XE musters as std.

I'm not slating anyone with a proven 1600 8v, but the XE is an absolute gem. A 150k smoker will still have some life left in it & pull like a train.

The 1600 16v falls nicely in the middle. I've owned all 3 & speak the truth.

My 1650 8v has cost roughly £1500 and most of the stuff wasn't new, but it was a fully rebuild to top spec.

It depends on what you want the car for really. Gaytop is a cheaper and easier option to get the power

Ash I had you in mind when I was typing my last reply.
I've seen dan's old engine go on track & it was fantastic.

Personally if it was me, I'd have an Astra GTE 16v all day if I had to have an XE. The chassis is far better suited to the engine than any Nova.

1.6 8v tb`d would be my choice, not a fan of big block xe`s in novas unless there c20let

After owning 2 Astra GTE 16v's. Tbh its the best cars I've ever had. Waaaay better than a Nova but I've no idea why I still don't have one.

Man's car!

"ok" engine? Lol
The XE was a proper performance motor back in its day(and still is to an extent), and out performed pretty much all other "hot hatch" engines when it was first developed. And is far far superior to the 8v 2L.
They used them in the BTCC for a reason.....

Id have a 1600 8v or 16v over a 2L 8v anyday.

8v's have a lot of fans as they outsold/out numbered the XE's (Cav GSi's & GTE's etc) massively.

So many left on the road but as Adam says, in its day the XE was one of the best 4 cyl engines out there. Only BMW's 2.3(2.5?) E30 M3 engine was any better really, and that had a greater capacity to get bigger power.

The XE was handbuilt IIRC which just goes to show why they plod on to mega miles.

They probably outsold them because cheaper costs(buying the car in the first place, insurance cost etc)

a xe nova came 2nd in the handling circuit at TOTB. im sure you wont be thinking i wish i put the 1600 in if you put the xe in! more power and can still handle.

What about a C16XE, 1.6 & 16v with great tuning potential and lower weight than C20XE. Best of both worlds! Or even a small block X18XE1, but it would need some thought on fuelling(TB's or carbs). Just a thought!

redtop and 1.6 8v defferances - pro's - con's

1.6 8V
Pros- None its pap
Cons- Usually in the way in a Nova engine bay and you have to take them out

REDTOP
Pros- Loads
Cons- Every other tosser thinks theyre worth £700 when selling and £50 when buying.
