I'd finish the saloon

But if a cheap, decent S1 RST came up forsale I think I'd snap it up :)

Jack

How much work/time/cost is required to "finish" it? Weigh that up against how much you'd sell it for (assuming thats why you're talking of finishing it)...

burgo
26-11-08, 08:08 AM
well the loon already owes me at least £2000 and needs about £4000 to finish it and then would probably be worth £2500-3000 tops

a series one i could buy and restore for £4000 easily and then that would be worth between £4000-5000

my mate dave has a S1 RST :D lushness...

**** the loon off and get one my son, they are miles better in regards to looks and pretty quick as std. I think daves runnin just over 200brake

As much as i'm getting into nova's the s1 rs is awsome. And Retro ford prices are on the up, even shabby ones, so get in now.

Where are you getting the 4K from Burgo?? Is it one already for sale.

If you're looking at it financially how much will you get back from the 2K already invested in the loon? Because

£2000 already invested (sunk cost)
£4000 to finish loon
£4000 to buy and restore S1 RST

So to finish the loon is the same as the RST, what you get back from the 2K invested will make the S1 cheaper by that amount.

However if like you say you're then going to sell it then it's a no brainer and I'd buy the S1

turbojolt

i voted sell the loon and get the rs turbo but thats just becuse i dont really like the saloon novas

twistysnovagte
26-11-08, 12:25 PM
i voted the rst purley becuase i think imo,it will be worth alot more in years to come!?plus there such a more better looking motor than the loon, again imo.

Ok so from "some" of the points I've seen people are going on

Saloons are ugly
And costsWell I take it you didn't buy a loon because you think it's an ugly mo fo lol. And if its down to lossing money don't buy a F'ing car. Its not like your going to get an RST and leave it at that really,

And if you smash, broke it , some one keyed it . . . ect your not going to make this 4k and a re-shell wont be £500 -£1000 which you could do with a nova :(

Only my imput.

You may aswell finish the nova over winter (I don't know how much is left) and then sell it if your going to in spring.

Tom

(Sorry i got to involved lol.)

loons are the future mate. tbh the mk3 escy is sooo easy to *ahem* borrow that i wouldnt bother, plus most have been thrashed to death, or poorly maintained. find a grandad spec ghia and lob a zvh turbo in it, now thats cool, or an estate? google gartrac or rs1700t now thats an escy!!!

twistysnovagte
26-11-08, 02:23 PM
tbh the mk3 escy is sooo easy to *ahem* borrow that i wouldnt bother, plus most have been thrashed to death, or poorly maintained. oh right and the nova is nowhere along those lineslol

26-11-08, 02:41 PM
err, lets put it this way my mates series one went for a wander, and it had a toad alarm on it. gone in 60 seconds. they used a screwy and some wire snips. easier than a nova, lol

Andy
26-11-08, 02:44 PM
S1 all the way, will be worth miles more in years to come.To be blunt a loon is sh1te compared to one of those. The old escorts will always hold their value.

Sloth
26-11-08, 02:45 PM
so a loon with a let or saab turbo lump is **** compared to a s1?

Andy

Any old car can be took in seconds, alarm or not. What about if it got hi ab away then? what use is an immobiliser then?

Its not worth as much as an in equal condition s1 which is what this thread is about

Sloth
26-11-08, 02:49 PM
i thought it was overall comparisons? ie performance etc. and tbh the s1 is overrated. my cash would be on a saph cossie at 4k.

Nah mine would be on an old 3 door.Rs500 if money allowed.. oh yes

the only thing with the road going rs500 is it basically the same as the 3 door cosworths apart from a different lip on the rear wing and a couple of other tiny touches

so you are paying bucket loads more money just for the 500 name

Pistol Pete
26-11-08, 03:36 PM
Havent read the whole thread. Whats needed to finish it? If its not a great deal get it done and enjoy it. I myself have an ongoing project and sometimes think about selling up. Series turbos are nice cars though. If i had one i wouldnt want to get it dirty though!!

i never voted as i would have both :D but on the other hand do what is finacially better for you.

burgo
26-11-08, 07:29 PM
the thing about doing a series one is it doesnt matter if its rotten or bin thrashed infact thats exactly what im after as id be restoring it from the ground up. the other thing with them is that you dont have to reshell them if they are rotten as pretty much every panel is still available. id build a tame 2L zvh which would cost £500 max todo and put out about 250 bhp so hardly gonna be slow is it.

yes restoring a car is a hell of alot more work than finishing the saloon to the spec i want it but the spending at least another 4 grand for a 2 grand return just seems pointless to me

Spudly
26-11-08, 07:33 PM
Sounds to me like youve already decided what youre wanting to do mate tbh.

Id go with the S1 if its what you want, theyre sexy as hell and they must be rarer than a nova all day long!

Mike
26-11-08, 07:35 PM
S1 anyday, it'll hold a lot higher price then a Nova in years to come.

Only problems are the S1 engines are pap.

Only problems are the S1 engines are pap.hence slapping the zetec bottom end on it ;)

to be honest series ones really aren't that rare (yet).

the only thing that is holding me back is im worried ill sell the loon and it wont get finished and end up getting scraped then all the hard work and money i put into the shell is wasted

dan16v
26-11-08, 08:11 PM
If there is one thing i have learnt over the years, its never to waste money on a Vauxhall nova! they are just not worth it, and then once complete they are worth bugger all! wish i had never started myne.
Id quit now and save the cash, as you say, the S1 has a good following and will hold its value.

Personally I hate series 1 RS turbo's. Series 2's look far better IMO.

Practically THE most adored car of my generation. Everyone seems to love them as if to say 'I appreciate a classic'. Nothing special about them IMO.

Keep at the loon, though with no evidence of what you have been upto with it, what do I know?

Novaboi_1991
26-11-08, 08:27 PM
TBH, novas are getting rarer and rarer by the year as most of them rot and end up scrapped,

where as there are more of those escorts about if you look, and as someone above said, most have been thrashed by idiots or boy racers, and poorly maintained, also they problem is circled, FORD lol

My vote is on the nova, soz mate

The way ive always seen it is as soon as you start worrying about the money aspect, your heart's no longer in it.

Its a simple statement, but its envariably true. Just look at everyone else who has sold up to buy more reliable or better value cars.

Question you have to ask yourself is, are you still an enthusiast, or are you starting to get more sensible in your old age? lol

Mike
26-11-08, 08:56 PM
Im with paragraph three Lee ;) i really cant wait to finish mine and sell it for a new project :D but thats not till we move house :(

I'm living proof of that, as soon as I bought the saloon I started hating it, and never had the money for it. But I still have the damned thing, and probably still will for a long while yet lol

We still need to V6 it too :D

And yes, it needs to be V6'd... OOR a little something different im cooking up at the moment for my 2009 project :) I may use yours as the test subject if your game for a giggle!

But back to Burgo's topic, i thought you were really enthusiastic about this car! I was really looking forward to seing it!

im far from sensible so its not that lol and i was enthusiastic with it but i seem to have lost it completely.

however i think ive decided what to do. im gonna finish it but far from the standard that i was going to do it to. in other words its having a standard xe, off the shelf front suspension, standard back suspension and no aero aids at all. should still be nippy tho hopefully
