Ive got a 1.4 carb Nova and I keep getting this dirty rattling sounds from my engine when the engine is running and i take my foot off the clutch but not in gear. It sounds as if something is loose but the sound is hard to describe, also when i rev it with my foot of the clutch then there is a rattling sound quite high pitch but if i rev it with my foot on the clutch it sounds ok. I find that i end up keeping my foot on the clutch if im pulled up at lights or whatever so that the engine doesnt sound so dirty. Its well due for a service now but im not sure if it will help. ALSO the zorst sounds like its got a hole in it but i have taken it to a garage and they say that theres nothing wrong with it and it definitely hasnt got a hole but its quite a high pitch sound that comes from it, the zorst is only standard but still i know it shouldnt sound this dirty. I know theres a lot of shit here but any help would be well appreciated. Cheers lads 8)

Does the noise from the engine happen all the time or just during warm-up?
I have a noisey exhaust, even though it's standard. I've had all new sections in the last year. As I drive a 1.4 carb I'd say the noise from the exhaust could be pinking, but thats kind of a popping sound.
If I were you I'd service it and check all the rubbers and U bolts on the exhaust, could be something slightly out of place.
could be something rattling inside the zorst (stone or summut). Kids round my way have a habit of shoving things up zorsts - pebbles etc.
Chek its not rubbing on thre handbrake cable - saw a similar post a while back where this was the prob

If you have a dodgy noise that disappears when you press the clutsh, it could be your clutch release bearing is worn. Don't know how this noice can come out of your exhaust though? Maybe you have two problems here?

Ball bearings Ade, they're the best.
Draining oli from the engine/box.
Removing rubber from wiper blades.
Smashing the petrol filler lock.
You name it I've "heard" of it being done near me.
