The basement was flooded where i work so I was looking down making sure my trousers werent getting wet. Didnt notice there was a broken jagged concrete pipe sticking out of the wall and walked full force into it with my face. ouch!
Nothing broken but very bruised and it stings :( Cant really see in the picture but its swollen too, picture doesnt really do it justice lol

Cue 'fail' jokes etc ;)

I'm considering sueing lol well if the normal lifts weren't broken as usual I wouldnt have been in the flooded basement trying to use the reserve lifts and looking down whilst walking. Plus there was no bright coloured danger or warning tape to make it obvious just your usual brown tape that made it blend into the wall. Probably wouldnt win tho unless it scars or something lol

health & safety law has been seriously breached if your gaffer actually told you to go there, poor lighting, sharp objects, slippy wet floor, Debenhams would be screwed in a court of law........

Well we have two massive lifts to bring stock up with but even though they spent 3 grand installing a new one they were all broken.
So my supervisor showed me these little ones in the corner of the store (which after being there for 3 years i didnt even know existed lol)
One of those didnt work either and the one that did, someone hadnt closed the door properly so it wouldn move which means we had to go down and get it instead of calling it up
Which involved going through the flood
My department manager said he had bashed himself on that before but because he isnt as short as me he hit his shoulder instead lol

your firm should have a fire marshall, & someone to assess health & safety matters. If they are in breach of these & they obviously are, they cannot legally punish you if you dob them in. if they try, then the tribunal would love to hear from you

Debenhams are a huge organisation, & to find out that they have conditions that sound more like a scene from Oliver twist than in the modern age is so typical. if a small shop had a flooded cellar & a member of staff had to go down there, the boss would make it safe to do so, but in such a faceless company as debenhams, some middle manager thinks it is fine, so a girl gets hurt.

She didnt have to go! Some times people do need to use common sense.. And more to the point you've only heard half the story and thats half from someone who also felt it was a bad injury worthy of sueing for, I do believe some artistic license MAY have been used.

This is just supposed to be a 'look what i did today' thread.

If you read it properly you will see that I said I wasnt actually going to sue, IT WAS A JOKE!!!! :wtf:

Its not a celler, its a stockroom, I also explained I only call it the basement because thats what the lift button says and its easier than explaining that debenhams ipswich have a separate stockroom for the norwich store and I had walked through that into a long corridor that leads to the lifts.

AND by the time they had looked at me and filled out an accident report form on sunday it was the end of the day and management had gone home to their mansions. Yesterday I had Uni from 9 till 6 so no I didnt complain yesterday either. I have uni again today so I plan to go in to work tomorrow to talk to the manager about getting the pipe sorted out.

I have three kids, and the view I take with them is thus:

"I will tell you of a perceived risk & you can get on with it, but don't come crying to me if you hurt yourself."
They get into some incredible scrapes just like all other kids, they fall off bikes, take football impacts, get cuts & grazes.

I really hate workplaces where the attitude is so lacking that someone manages to walk into a protruding pipe in a stockroom, a place like that is an accident timebomb.

the weils disease thing is a real & serious threat, I know a bloke who got it & was out of action for 6 months, a lot of that in hospital. think of this sobering thought. most pubs store bottles in areas where there are rats, rats carry the disease, & p1ss all over the bottles. it is now considered trendy to drink out of bottles in pubs, I won't.

Its not exactly a 'lapse' attitude.. I would imagine no one has said the pipe is sticking out so no one has been asked to fix it. People are very fast to blame management about personal injuries but 9 times out of ten its down to lack of attention or simple stupidity.
