Hi people, I've got a 1300 8v carb Nova here. I'm having a problem with it.

Just recently, the car sometimes loses all power out on the road. Usually it clears itself and I never think twice. But I was driving her this morning, and it happened. The car ok when I first set off, but after maybe 6-7 miles, I lost all power. She dipped off a cylinder or two and at one stage didn't even have enough power to maintain 50 mph. I tried stopping and revving the car, and eventually she revved cleanly enough, but once I set off she was back to spluttering.

I have a brand new coil in the garage and a spare distributor and cap, I may try these.

Is this likely to be leads or something?

Cheers

Get some carb cleaner and clean out the carb. Also check your fuel lines incase one is worn and causing a drop in fuel pressure.

The fact it rev's fine on idle but stuggles under load makes me think its a fuel problem.

Cheers Keith.

Tank and all fuel lines have been replaced, as well as a pre-pump fuel filter fitted. Must try the carb cleaner, thanks.

check dizzy cap aswell - if it sounds like its misfiring could be a connection in the cap or rotor arm. Doesnt hurt to change the leads. All the weather/moisture might be the issue.

Is it manual or auto choke (revs drop perhaps not idling properly/timing)

Is water levels, temp etc okay?

and if it does it does it after 6-7 miles would this be the temp sensor opening when engine warmed up letting fluids flow round the engine?
Could that cause the problem...head gasket...

sounds like carb icing. have you got an aftermarket air filter installed?

Thanks for the advice guys but the car has fixed itself lol , I did run it very low on fuel (forgot to mention), so I'm putting it down to that!!

Yeah K&N bolt on filter.

It has auto choke but it doesn't work so I want to convert to manual choke. Have to sit in the car with some revs to get it to warm up and idle!

Just to echo meritlover it does sound like carb icing. What was the temp like when it happened? If it was anything like freezing then almost certainly that, would quite easily sort itself out if the temp warmed up a bit from one trip to the next.

Solutions are either to fit your old air filter with the hot air intake from above the exhaust manifold, buy a hot air kit which block part of your filter and pipes hot air from the exhaust manifold or to make up the kit yourself (plastic and piping)
