View Full Version : Range of an XE Nova

Tomorrow I shall be doing, according to gmaps, 306 miles in the Novargh.

1. Will it make it on one tank of fuel (if so, will it then get me the 30 miles home on Sunday)? Road condition is about 60/40 A-road/dual carriageway to motorway.

2. Will it do it without breaking? If not, how far til I have to call the RAC? lol

3. I will reset the trip counter before leaving. If gmaps says 306 miles, how much will the trip counter read? (cav dials with 195/60/15 tyres)

Place your bets noooooowwwww

I used to get 330 miles exactly from a full tank in my old XE, to the exact mile.

Adam
07-11-08, 05:20 PM
How long was that ago? /\ (thinking of fuel costs)

Ben
07-11-08, 05:21 PM
Dosent matter a nova tank 6 years ago was the same size as a nova tank today.

used to cost £35 from a completely empty to full.

Adam
07-11-08, 05:22 PM
LMAO lol
I forgot that lol

Jack
07-11-08, 05:26 PM
lmfao, the cost isn't an issue really as it'd be a damned sight cheaper than taking the Celica. However the reliability may be an issue.

Having said that, it did make it to PVS08 and back this year. But then broke down last night about 150 yards from my home as i ran out of electricity lol (spare battery will be on passenger seat!)

[edit] 45 litres at 92.9p = £39, excellent

Adam
07-11-08, 05:26 PM
45 and you'll be pissing all over the forecourt, try 42

Ben
07-11-08, 05:28 PM
hmmm 50mpg 130bhp 320nm FTW!

Jack
07-11-08, 05:29 PM
Oops, yeah I meant 42, as that's what I calculated it as... lol

Adam
07-11-08, 05:29 PM
You wont cover that mileage on one tank imo,, i never have anyway

Jack
07-11-08, 05:30 PM
You forget I am captain slow :D

Ben
07-11-08, 05:31 PM
i could only get 320 with a standard GSi

**** me!!!! how on earth can you do that many miles on 1 tank. my 2.0 8v is shocking on fuel, skints me running it!!!

Ben
07-11-08, 05:37 PM
Standard astra is about 32-33mpg so say 10 gallon tank incl pipe when filled to brim, and take into account the nova is smaller, lighter than the astra = a possible 300-350mpg depending on fuel, driving style etc etc

Adam
07-11-08, 05:38 PM
Can get more miles from the more efficient 16v :p lol

Good power/torque in a small car is a winner when it comes to fuel consumption.

i used to get about 320 out of my SRi if i was lucky, i suppose the way i drive wont help my mpglol

I'd just fill it half tank because otherwise you're wasting petrol by carrying the extra weight. It also feels like you've got a fat bird in the back lol Yes even with a redtop Mr Jack.

they say you use more fuel if you only "half fill" something to do with more air in the tank. i managed 330 in my xe with sensible driving.:thumb:

I was after decent fuel consumption lol

LOL if I had rear seats I'd also be folding them down, and polishing the car :p

It'll have a few tools in it too, and I currently have the spare alloy in the back. I think I may keep that in though, just in case.

How the funk do you get £35 in a nova tank? I've never been able to get more than 25 full on max.

And i get 150miles if i'm lucky... so about that.

Adam
07-11-08, 07:56 PM
The tank holds 42L, £25 is about 26L......

trackdaynova
07-11-08, 07:58 PM
£35 fills my tank of V-Power, and I get about 75 track miles lol

a trackday is about three tanks worth lol

Benn

No way, they are 42l? Even when i had the standard filler pipping the fuel would be at all most the top of the next at £25...

Adam

I have the same prob, it goes down to in the red, i put £30 in and it goes up and above the max mark lol
When it should be like 3/4s max.

Must be nova fuel gauges for you.

Lynsey
07-11-08, 08:02 PM
When I first passed my test I could only get £28 in the nova, from empty to full (dribbling out of the cap lmao). Then with the rise in petrol prices it was almost £50!! Back down a bit now, hopefully it'll keep going that way too.

I run mine out of fuel a while ago, to sort the pipe work.
£27 (£1.10 per lt) took it to full on the gauge and it was in the filler neck...

I know the gauge is toss but its being in the filler must be a sign of fullness..

General Baxter
07-11-08, 10:25 PM
wtf, i put £38 in my nova Thursday, and that was not even in the pipe,
i shall even take a photo of the receipt in the morn lol

that was with the digi dash on two bars with the light flashing lol

Jack
07-11-08, 10:35 PM
I would take the faff but I don't have the £80 for fuel required lol

Fix it then.
Don't have time in the morning if i want to leave early, cba to do it now

Have you done up the bolts on both the tie rods? If not, do it! I will be checking next time I see the car. This could be at any time.

Jack
08-11-08, 03:27 PM
LOL yes, done that pretty sharpish :D

Discovered one of the bolts that held the coil mount on had worked loose, so the coil had a bad earth  Also gave the battery a quick blatt on the charger as that seemed a little low.

I think there could well be a problem with the alternator as well though, with the engine running the battery still registers about 12.5 volts - shouldn't it go up to ~14.5?

150miles from an XE? Minimum of 250 form mine, 300ish usually. Think I saw 330 a couple of times too.

Hmm, sounds like a dodgy tank breather or something is forcing fuel to sit in the filler neck.
I get much more than £27 in, even if it takes the needle past max on the gauge. I had £38 in the other week, and the gauge sat past max for about 100miles,Lol

Ben
09-11-08, 03:37 PM
My old GSi would do 200 miles without registering any fuel gone, then last 100 miles it would drop like a stone!

Andy
09-11-08, 03:39 PM
My sr did that i got to Pvs from scarborough on a quarter of a tank lol then it took 3/4 to get home lol

Thats because of the way the tank is shaped, apparently the top half of the tank is more like two thirds than half and obviously the bottom half is more like one third, hence why the fuel seems to last so long without registering on the guage and it drops so quickly once under half!

Benn, definatly something wrong with your tank, a Nova tank holds 45 litres, so there is no possible way your tank could go from empty to completely full on £25, its impossible unless your getting fuel for 60p a litre.

Also, if your nova only doe's 150 miles to a full tank, there is something seriously wrong with your engine. it should average 32mpg all day long even with the odd thrash. 45 Litres = 9 Gallon, 150 miles/9 gallon = 16 miles per gallon, thats less than a supercharged monaro lol

I'd suggest getting a new fuel tank or removing your's to see why it holds so little :)

Me and dan where talking about this today.
We thought maybe the sender is wrong.. But i've run the car out till it stoped before so it must be right.
If i do a motorway trip(show or what ever) i will get a bit better but thats 200 max.

Not nesasarrly (why is it I can never spell that correctly, but every time i try I come up with a completely new way of spelling it wrong!)
a badly gone battery can cause drain on the system showing lower voltage.
