Ok, I've been offered a GSi Cav for €400 (£320) but the problems are like this...

The car had a burning smell and when looked at the tensioner was seen to be slack and the timing belt was removed by hand there and then. A belt was refitted and the car started, but missed as much as it didnt. The Belt are again removed and renewed along with a 2nd hand tensioner. The fault persisted.

I'm assuming bent valves and so if thats the case I'm also assuming a spare head would cure it providing theres no Piston Damage visable.

Am I right? Is there anything else I should look at?

It would appear you have covered all possibilities, yes.

But if this has been running like this for a while, the damage to the pistons, could be quite severe, no?

I was examining this yesterday, there is a little shine on the pistons where the valves made contact but no damage whatsoever, which would lead me to believe that it was caught in a nick of time. Oh and 11 Valves bent in total. I dont know how but thats what came back after being pressure tested.

bent valves 9/10 times means cracked valve guides

Aye, so a new decent head should see me right then so.

I also have a 2nd head but something got caught in the chamber and knocked lumps out of the head on cylander no 3. The Valves werent damaged but the alloy on the head got pretty much grated to bits. Could I have this chamber alloy filled and buffed down and new valves fitted? Or is it a mission to get right?

best bet is to get that section of the head cut out and replace it with a good number 3 cylinder....

Ok I've been offered a Head with 3 Bent Valves FOC but I'm wondering, what else I should look for when changing the valves.

Also, is it worth my while getting a Valve Spring Clamp, should the stem seals be replaced etc?

might aswell replace the stem seals which you have the valve spring tool. saves it smoking if there on their way...

get a grinding stick and paste and re-lap all the valves back in nicely aswell..

get a grinding stick and paste and re-lap all the valves back in nicely aswell..

Whats involved in that process? I'm guessing its simply to make the valves close as tight as possible. Can you talk me through the process mate?

it will involve buying on of these kits
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DRAPER-VALVE-GRINDING-STICK-GRINDING-PASTE-72891_W0QQitemZ180234098613QQcmdZViewItem?hash=ite m180234098613&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A4%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318

say you have valves removed be it 1 or all of them.

you will drop a valve back in with some co**** paste on the valve seat. you stick the stick to the valve and basicly spin the stick/valve in your hands. so the valve spins against its vavle seat. this grinds the valve and seat surface so they match perfectly. you will have to go over each valve a few times 1st with co**** paste then fine paste.

this will make the valves seal against their respective valve seats as best as possible..

this link may help a little aswell
