Hello all, i have just got myself what i belive to be a X16XE1 out of a 1995 Astra sport, i have decided to go along the route of bike carbs, however i just have a couple of issues, as this engine runs off a coil pack can i still use bike carbs ? as far as i know i'll need to be able to advance the ignition timing so i'll need a dizzy because as standard the engine advances and retards the timing automatically via sensors and the ECU, as i'll be getting rid of the standard injection system the ECU wont be there so i'm unsure to a what to do ?? Dose anybody know of a dizzy that would fit on this engine ? Or anybody with any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers.
No dizzy fits it. You have to use a aftermarket ignition ecu (mbe/dta/megajolt)

you can modify the head so you can mount a dizzy off a 1.4 sr ive seen it on a few rally cars but you will have to make friends with some one that has the right tools to do it

Cheers for the info guys, so will the aftermarket ignition system do away with the coilpack totally yeh? What will i get then, a Coil, Ignition Module and aftermarket Coilpack.

You keep the coilpack. Usually you will get a new ecu with the wiring and you have to get a (TPS) throttle position sensor. If you give SBD a ring they can set up what you want with a preset map and supply everything you will need, just give them a call or email them.
I got quoted around £550 for everything including a new coilpack but I have been told that you won't need theirs as its the same as the standard, which is a saving of £80.
I'd go direct to DTA/MBE so you dont pay the SBD tax ;)

The r1 carbs have a TPS anyway.
Would an ECU controlled system is connected to CTS sensor be able to control choke?
"choke" as such yeah.
I.e. the ecu will richen the mix when coolant/engine temp is colder

I know the choke is manual on a R1 so i'm unsure to as how the "ECU" would be able to alter this. I'm not worried about this anyhow as i'll run a manual choke. As said above the R1 carbs have a thottle position sensor so i wont need one of them. I'm going to firstly see if i can retro fit any dizzy to the engine as i think it maybe easier and loads loads cheaper, dose any smallblock 16v engine come with a dizzy ???

Thinking about it yeah, you would still need the manual choke as all the ECU is controlling is ignition timing and spark based upon info from TPS and crank sensor.
The R1 carbs have quite a good choke system, which works well

Nope
