I've just looked in my haynes manual and it says that GTEs have 175 tyres and SRs have 165. Are the alloys different, what do other people use?

the GTE/GSI alloys were an optional extra on SR's and would have the 175 width of tyre, if you didnt choose the alloys when you brought the car new you got black SR stellies and these were 165 wide

I've got 14 x 5J Vauxhall 3 spokes on my SR, I run 165/65/R14T's.

in the old days, the rule used to be 4.5 x 13 inch rims, 165 tyres max, 5 x 13/14 rims, 175 tyres max, 5.5 x 13/14 rims 185 tyres max...

the good thing about 175/65 r14's is that you don't have to muck about with the arches. I've got 185/60r14's on 5.5 inch ET49 steel rims (off astra) and I had to grind 1/4 inch off the arches.
