hi, just in the process of changing my gearbox, thinking of changing the fly wheel for a lightend & balanced item, just wondering if people think its worth doing on a standard xe lump?
also any recomendations of a good quality clutch.

On a standard lump the flywheel money, for a proper one not an ebay explosion special, is probably better spent elsewhere, like management, if you're wanting to go faster. The same goes for the clutch really if its a road car.

As i said on mig, well worth it.
Makes driving around town nice as its smoother. As well as when out in normal driving.

Er no?

I'll re-phrase anyway. On a standard engine its probably not worth spending the money on a flywheel, unless you were planning on buying a cheap one on ebay which may or may not explode. If you're wanting to go faster the money would probably be better spent on mappable engine management, which would prove to be a better long term investment. If its a road car thats used daily then the same goes for the clutch really, a paddle clutch can be a pain to live with daily. Seeing as the standard engine has quite a broad power curve, there is no need to keep it 'on the boil'.

do you guys know if you can buy lightened & balanced job's for 1.2 8v's ?

will be the same as a 1.3/1.4 flywheel (not the SRI though)... tbh there is minimal point on a small capacity engine as you will lose a lot of the inertia that keeps the engine spinning in the first place

cheers stu, thats what i was hoping, ive kinda got an idea in my mind for a 1400 with carbs, cam and flywheel, would be cool if i could get everything thats compatible and slap it on the 1.2, so whenever i get a 1400 engine i could transfer it all over.

Get a standard one lighten.

And hes talking about an xe, lighening the flywheel is worth doing.
You'll notice the first time you drive slow and in traffic and so on.

yer, was looking at autosprint site last night, might consider getting it done to my flywheel, just a case of turn arround on gettin it done.
i also see a lightend billet one on chris astly motorsport for £189, claimed to be 40% lighter.

DO NOT Lighten a standard flywheel, your just asking for trouble!!! especialy one from people charge loads to lighten (not naming anyone) but autosprint do them for around £50.

its better to be safe than sorry. if you have an xe then buy a flat type flywheel (way lighter than a pot type) otherwise dont lighten one. buy a billet one...

must admit it makes a big difference (i went from flat flywheel on my let 6.5kg's ish to a fidanza pot type 3.5kgs made a massive difference)

but this is what happens when its not done properly...

nothing wrong with a lightened standard one of done by someone who knows what they are doing

if you keep them thick enough (not making a original one 2 kilo) there arent any problems. ofcourse have it ballanced!!

but have it done by a pro.

This is the whole point, you cant go some where with some one that doesnt know anything, it needs to be done propley by an engineer.

A flat standard one you cant go lower in weigh than 5-5.5kg.

If you look at the pic you can see its a pot one that i bet has been lighten to much, and i bet itsd not need balanced checked either.

Mines been in over a year..

fok:eek: them pictures are putting me of changing the flywheel alltogeather!

so autosprint are the only one's to trust as regards to lightening a standard flywheel, otherwise buy billet.

What you have to remember with those pics is...

Was it made to high so it wasnt strong enough.. Did they use new bolts to hold it on, as they are streach bolts..

Was it balanced..

There is tomany might bes with pics... and they've been around for ages...
