father of son whos just bought a1.2 F plated and starter motor solenoid is smoking!!!! rather than pay out again, is it easy to change the starter motor

yes. A 17mm and a 19mm bolt hold the starter motor on, and a 13mm bolts attaches the main power feed from the battery (the big red lead on the back of the solenoid), and a small bolt/spade connector (black with red line) for the ign wire.
Simply......
1) Disconnect the battery
2) Disconnect the two wires from the back of the solenoid (may have to take the air filter off to give you some room
3) Undo the two securing bolts. (may be easier to undo the bolt under the starter motor if you go from underneath)
4) Fit the new one in the reverse procedure making sure you have sanded the mating surafces for a good earth.
Job done
When I changed mine on my old 1.3, I had great troubles with the earth and anded up ruinning an aux earth.
