View Full Version : Need opinions on which engine to throttle body
As above.
Basically i should soon have some 45mm throttle bodies.
And as most people know currently have a 1600 16v fitted.
But have a full rebuilt xe i was planning on fitting this weekend.
BUT which engine do i fit the bodies too? I seriously cannot decide
The 1600 is already in and i know its a great engine, tb's would make it awesome.
But the xe would produce a lot more power and torque, and be a "fresh" engine to use. But ive never heard the engine run.
And i need peoples pros/cons of each option
Post away :)

I'd say fit them to the 1600. You have been driving the car with that engine. An XE will handle different. When you get bored of the 1600, stick them on the XE abd hey presto, new car! lol
meh , theres more xe tb maps of different people on here lol
would be mint on any really ad , but as said POWER lol

Thats actually a good idea lol
1600 all the way due to weight and overall handling benefits over the xe.
you want tapered throttle bodies not just plain jenvey type 45mm ones ect

The same type seem to work fine on Lee303s old 1600!

big block FTW
boooooooo small block small cock
big block just to upset the haters
Had a quick think.
Probably going to keep running about with the 1600 for now, and get the bodies etc fited onto the 2L, and then fit it some other time(no idea when though, probably get the mot out the way first)
More power/torque,and a much fresher engine. Makes sense really. :)
Its got two cams in it yeah

Badum tish! lol
lol
The cams are std dispak xe cams Burgo.
Looking at AutoSprints site though, 288deg regrinds are only £165....
Dont know what a xe can have in though with std piston pockets.
ahhh funny fooker. all i meant is that cams and TBs compliment each other nicely so might be worth getting some before putting the engine in aswell
lol
Yep. Autosprints regrinds look cheap as fook too
The engine dont have ARP rod bolts though, so want to keep to 7200rpm and below if possible.

surely its your decision  unless I'm missing the point of the post?
If you want to be a man, and straight, put the 20XE in.
If you're scared of proper engines, and a bit the other way, then keep your Tomy engine.
EDIT/ADDED: just read you've asked for pro's and con's.
2.0 - Pros - pretty much bullet proof within reason, more power, more torque
2.0 - Cons - none
1.6 - Pros - none
1.6 - Cons - less power, less torque
Its my decision yes, but i was asking for help deciding on it lol
fit arps aswell then Ad! not hard is it and they dont cost much

Since you have had the 16xe for so long you might as well finish it off, and when you get bored of it, you can then swap it over to the big block.
There cannot be many people who have had two different throttlebody engine setups in the same car :thumb:

Is that not like adding 1cm onto a 1" penis though? lol
Just slap the biggun in there and stop fannying about ffs.
How suitable is a tb'd engine to drive daily btw(including winter) ?

Why would it matter what season you're in?
We're talking throttlebodies with management systems, not Carbs that you have re-tuned 17 times a year lol
They're fine... why wouldn't they be

ooh now i see what ur up to..
i bet ude think ide say 1.6 16v, and if it was summer time - ide poll that.
But seein as you have all winter; you might as well come out with 180bhp+ to play. 2l for me. Try it. 1.6 is spare.

As reliable as the std management?

Reliable?... depends if you actually get it mapped or not IMO, those people with TB'd cars and running on a basemap expecting to get good running, good mpg and good power isn't right imo.
I can't see the justification in spending X amount building a TB'd XE only then to scrimp on the most important part of the whole running of the engine, the mapping.
Back to reliability... not sure what you mean... I've dealt personally with MBE & DTA, and both are 'reliable', to which I'm not sure what you mean by that...
Never dealt with Emerald, Omex, Megasquirt etc, but I'm sure they're all as equally as good.
Provided its mapped correctly with a good cold start map it will be fine.
And I doubt I need to air my opinion? lol lol
Wheres the neither option? Just cut out the middle steps and fit a LET.

small block i reckon not many about and would make a refreshing change, also you know the 1600 is a good runner then as soon as you get bored of the 1600 install the tb's on the 2lt job done always a gamble not hearing an engine run but 9 times out of 10 xe's are bullet proof

Build up the bigblock XE & TB's, put it in when you can be bothered (after winter)
Pistol Pete

Just stick with the 1600 and sell me the TB's! lol

1600 16v!!!! i love small blocks!!
Id go big block.. If your taking the time, id go with new rings as well and run the engine in. If your spending all that money on tb's you dont want 15 year old rings letting you down on power
small blocks are for weeners (sp.)

i would say the 1.6 nice and light and will be very rev,y with nice power
Come round and have a drive of mine Adam. Might help in the decision process.
