If you want to keep the standard inlet you'll be wasting your time?! Maybe lighten and balance the bottom end, have some head work done? Junk the standard inlet for some carbs? That alone would see some major improvements IMO.

Standard inlet is good for 150bhp+.

When coupled up to a turbo i'm guessing?!

Yes & no, but a standard inlet will still work flow enough air to run a 150bhp+ N/A or charged engine.

if i get the engine bored i will need new pistons?

Yes as your changing the width of the cylinder bore/\

A good exhaust manifold and system, 300deg cam, bit of headwork, and aftermarket management will see 140/150bhp on the standard inlet and throttle body.

where can i get new pistons from? or will they have to be custom made?

www.sbdev.co.uk (http://www.sbdev.co.uk) might be of some use? Depends what size you bore it out to though.

I believe some Greek or spanish guy is seeing 300bhp from a turbo'd one. Ask Mike...

what would be a good engine management to run it on? and camshaft company?

What you trying to achieve? All out power i guess? How? Turbo charger? T/B's? Twin Carbs?

its not all out power. i want the interior and exterior to be fully standard, but the engine to literally be pushed to its limits, well within reason.

Hope you got deep pockets then :thumb:

Well you can either use the standard inlet, Weber DCOE carbs or ITB's. It's believed by many that throttle bodies make the power very high in the rev range, and again with the standard inlet, it needs a fair bit of work and the engine again makes it's power quite peaky, as in you have a very narrow power band. This is one of the reasons I went for carbs. From what I understand they give a better spread of power. Obversely I haven't driven all three differant types and other people will have differant opinions.

It maybe worth looking in the 'for sale' section here. I know theres a Blyenstien head for sale, which, really, is the one to go for. The guy is also selling a lairy cam, 308deg and solid lifters, which could be a little extreme for road use. I'm assuming it's for road use if your keeping interior etc?

yer it will be most likely for road use. what i wanted to make was an uprated gsi, kind of mechaniclly as far as you could go with it. i want standard inlet because i still want it to look standard but with that extra poke.
i am tempted b throttle bodies but i have never seen them fitted to this engine

if im thinking its the same guy that ash is talking about he is selling some throttle bodies aswell but the guy says that the peak power was roughly 7400 rpm(iirc) but as ash said ideally you want a blydenstein head as it is regarded as one of the best for this engine and with the head it doesnt matter what route you take at a later date(carbs,tb's,standard inlet?)as you will still get your use out of it.:thumb:
