anyone done this before ? got any pics ?
whats the best approach, i was thinkin just slap filler in there and be done with it, not doing this for looks or anything.. my boot lock has fallen apart prety much and u can get into the car with your finger so i thought do away with the lock and fill it in. rig up a bit of string for an internal boot pop.
Start by blocking the hole with some mesh or something, and then build that up with fibreglass, and finish with a light skim of filler.
I did mine myself, came out quite well

i plastic welded my lock section on to the rest of the handle and then put some fibreglass over it

As above. Did mine myself aswell. Fibreglassed and filler.
With regards to boot pop, mine is linked to my alarm with a central locking motor i think (was done when i bought the car).
I filled mine with a bent piece of thin steel and then fibre glassed and filled it, looks good will get a pic once its fitted

whoah.. done a good job on that adam, looks good. be happy if i could get it half as good as that :thumb:
Get down maplin, and buy a 2 wire soloind(sp) kit, run a wire from the battrey thru a fuse to a switch then to the boot, that will pop the boot at the touch of the button.
You can also rivet a biut of metal in to the hole, then fiber glass and fill to smooth. How i did my first one.
Its ment for a track car so popper wont be needed.

Why not? Doesnt say in his op that it was a track car. Also they were suggestions for a boot pop!:)

hefty dejavu this thread for some reason.
nah dont want a solenoid pop really, adding weight/wires/switches.
have started filling the handle, didnt have fibreglass, so i fillered a U-shaped piece of mesh into the hole, and then put first layer of filler on, see if i can scrounge enough out the tin for one more layer, see how it feels after that.
I didnt mean to start a up rip, i speak to jimbob nearly everyday (lol) but i was mearly saying that jimbob wont be having a boot pop as its a track car that has to be as light as possible.
Why is he whacking a load of unnecessary filler on it then? Just remove the grab handle if you're going for ultimate lightweightness.

mk.2 boots look totally wrong without the grab handle, and besides without the grab handle, there's 3 holes under it that would need filling anyway. a lil block of filler in the lockhole weights less that the lock and pin that was in there before. its gonna be driven on the roads again at last for its last month of tax and mot before it goes sorn, want to keep it sleeper as pos, police would have a field day with me if they pulled me over as it is.

did over the course of a week or so, quick 10 mins here and there:
managed to get thin ali mesh to grip in the hole with filler, bent it in a U-shape and kinda glued it down with filler, got it to this stage, where it needed one more skim of filler to finish prety much

probably coulda done with one more realy mild skim, as the handle wasnt flat to begin with, i had to custom shape it to blend with the banana shape of the plastic almost, gave it a blaze of primer and this is how it looks.

when i get time and money for a can of dark grey or whatevers origional bumper ish colour, just need to give it a quick sand to flat it back a tad, another mild prime, then paint on, should look ok when its done, not a patch on adams badboy, but im happy with.
