I have an E16SE engine in an '89 GTE. I need to remove the head. Haynes manual isn't very helpful on sequence for undoing the head studs
Can anyone provide correct sequence or explain what Haynes mean by a spiral sequence. I'm new to alloy heads!!

If you imagine laying a big circle on top of the head the idea is that you work from both the outsides equally in towards the centre. For eg start at bolt nearest alternator and undo quarter turn, next do the same to the 1 nearest opposite it ie the 1 nearest the top hose. Then go to the other end of the head and do the 1 nearest the rad and then the 1 nearest the brake servo. Move back to the other end of the head again but to the next 2 bolts in from the end and repeat so that you are slowly in effect spiralling in towards the centre. When you've undone all a quarter turn repeat in the same order but this time half a turn.

Sorry if it doesn't make any sense - its not easy to explain

1 5 9 7 3
2 6 10 8 4

Follow the sequence above, or open up the packet containing your new head gasket, it should have the tighening sequence, just do the opposite to that.

I've been told

1 9 8 5 4
2 10 7 6 3

to remove

and

9 5 1 4 8
10 6 2 3 7

To replace
