I'm after some rack mount rubbers and alloy rack mounts for my nova rebuild. I have looked on rally designs webite, chris astley, lmf, even the powerflex webite! No luck. Any pointers? Thanks.

Just had a look on there, no joy.

alloy mounts are pointless, whats wrong with new OE rubbers?

Why would you say, are alloy mounts are pointless?

You can get orange polyurathene rack bushes. Deflex/Flo-flex do them.

whats exactly wrong witht the OE brackets? thin pressed steel. probably stronger weight for weight of an alloy equivalent...and unless your rallying through a forrest track....it has to encounter very little latteral force.

Thanks for that. They do the other rubbers i was after aswell!

you didnt answer my question:cry:

I see what your saying. The alloy mounts *look* thicker and more up to the job than the thin steel brackets. When you add a big rubber mount in there (under the steel bracket) aswell, room for movement?

the alloy mounts are made to the same ID as the pressed steel OE type.
so any movement is likely to be just as apparent with alloy mounts.
the bulkhead is more likely to flex than the rack.

The alloy mounts come with a plastic insert aswell. I have stitch welded around my bulkhead. Would this not eliminate some of the flex?

what purpose is the insert of which you speak of?

stitch welding the bulkhead particularly around where the ridged pressing is that the gear linkage goes through will help a lot.

Well initially the car will be showed. But i am intending to give some track abuse as often as i can! I'm under going a rebuild at the moment so doing most of the bits and bobs as i go. Save having to strip and rebuild later on.

IMO its £50 worth of shiny bits....

that money would be better put towards a full allignment and geometry setup

Your opinion has been noted. As the rubbers are cheaper i think i'll order a set of those! lol

i thought the alloy mounts were designed to be used with out the rubber mounts. hence the plastic insert

Thats correct burgo. I was weighing up weather to keep the standard steel mounts and use new rubbers (which is what i think i'm going to do) or use the alloy mounts that come with the plastic insert.

Totally wrong, with the pointless comment! The flex comes in the steering from the OE rubbers moving constantly to give absorbtion from road bumps and vibrations!!

Alloy mounts are much better and a worth while upgrade if youre thinking about it! Even the uprated poly mounts on the standard mounts move a bit, with the alloy mounts its more direct and alot more reponsive! Ive had both and can safely say that the alloy ones are much much better, imo!:thumb:

Cheers for the input. I was considering getting the uprated rubbers along with a few others (the total of these is the same as the alloy mounts alone!) I can always upgrade to the alloy mounts at a later date.

By my reckoning, the alloy mounts have a larger flat surface area in contact with the bulkhead & the rack itself, compared with the OE mounts. This along with stiffer rubbers should help combat any flex. The std steel rack mountings are pretty rough, stamped steel efforts. Wheras aluminium is a weaker material, what with the rack mounts having far more material in them, they will be stiffer.

The alloy mounts come with plastic inserts, so any flex should be eliminated.

My alloy mounts don't utilise any rubbers or plastic inserts, just a tight interference fit on the rack...

I'm yet to try them but can see the logic in why they offer reduced flex.

Where did you get your Tom? Someone pointed me in the direction of pro tec. Theirs come with an insert.

no there doesnt seem to be any on there at the mo. i have heard they are just the same ones they sell for mk2 escorts tho and require abit of modification to fit

Ah, ok. Rather have ones made for the Nova TBH, but thanks.

Thanks. I have just ordered some orange rubbers from floflex. Also got exhaust, rear arb and rad rubbers aswell.

All the sets of alloy rack mounts that i have bought for me have had plastic inserts to fit inbetween the rack and mount!:thumb:

I may switch to the alloy mounts at a later date. The rubbers i just bought came to less than the alloy brackets!
