I've had some trouble with the tie bar tapping my F28. Gearbox is running chris astley mount, tie bar's are lowered with the rose jointed mounts and all spacers fitted, and tie bar run's under the wishbone.

Rick mentioned the box may be a little low -

Has anyone got a simaliar photo of their box showing the gap between it and the chassis? It's so I can remove the bracket and modify it to raise the box.

Cheers

Keith

If I was you Keith, I would make a new mount up from scratch, get the box about 1-2mm off of the chassis, then grind it back so you have some clearance. If you have to modify a mount IMO its a bit of bodge and theres no way I'd be wanted to grind off the moutn on the chassis at the moment and raise it. Have a look at Austins build, Im sure he made a mount up for his F28?

Cheers Paul - mine needs to come up about 10mm then. Going to buy some solid mounts and adjust the bracket if I need to.

Mine sits similar to Keiths, my tiebar brackets are lowered 50mm at the front tho, tiebars clear the box no bother.

How much do your tiebar brackets lower by ? 25mm ?

Thought the whole point in getting lowered tiebar brackets was to bring the tiebars more level (stops diving under braking / helps turn in ?), if you mount the tiebars under the bottom arms then you've lowered them about 35mm so your gonna need to lower the brackets the same just so there back in the origional position (if you know what i mean), so to benefit from lowered tiebar brackets (if your mounting the tirbars under the bottom arms) then surely your gonna need to lower them about 50mm - 60mm

Rich the issue is with dropping the tie bar to low using the stock mounting positions at the front is you can then cause flexing of the crossmember.

Keith try, supporting the engine & box on a trolley jack, loosen the mount bolts on the box, jack up the eng/box by a few mm & retighten.

Rich, I could look at your minty build pics all day!

Unless you do it like Rich has and weld an actual box section to the bottom of the crossmemember.

At the end of the day tho, as long as you use a decent thick bit of metal for the vertical part of the mount it should be fine. Especially on a new shell like Keiths and the sort of power he will be running on P2.

I think this is Rodgerq's with a thick welded plate:-

I must admit that I like the way Rich has done his. You can also move it forward a little like he's done to add a little castor.

I would buy another mount off chris astley but drill it yourself, that or weld a plate over the top of the old holes and redrill through where you need too.

Regarding the crossmember flexing issues, it simply won't happen on a good xmember if its been plated up and welded in the right areas, if not the lowered brackets I have made or F28 kits WILL cause it to break away

Turbo Gavs nova runs a rsj and a bit of 2" box as a crossmember with the brackets fixed to it, I'd like to think that even with whathe has planned it wont break lol possibly a little OTT on your average nova xe though

Cheers for all the Info guys, I'm happier now knowing Rich's is simaliar to mine. I had it out another run tonight and tbh it only taps the box if I hit a bad pothole or something. I'm going to look into either modifying the mount or putting another 5mm spacer on the tie bar brackets.

I think I run 50mm lowering blocks on the front and 35mm or so on the rear. Never had any problems in two years, so can measure up if you like?

Took a pic of the coupe tonight. Mines looks the same as yours. I think I'm gonna weld a box section on like rich.
