have you done a compression test? as having to tow it to start it sounds like no compression to me

Sounds like you may have a snapped cam belt :(

its runs fine when started but wont rev up after 3500 rpm unless built up slowley

Probably best to really think about a diagnosis using the facts to hand. An engine will not run at all let alone tick over nicely with no cambelt.

possibly timing, have u had dizzy or cap off, same problem i came cross years ago, a lad fitted it and it wouldnt run but would just about fire if towed, adjusted dizzy while it was just about ticking over and hey presto

also are the fuel lines the correct way round? pressure to rail, return from reg

the car was running fine but then left for about 3 years i have been told that it could be the fuel injection ecu on the air flow meter. can anyone shine any light on this

is the MAF working? sounds like it doesnt know how much airs getting in

or the base timing is waaaay out.

the box with the flapper that should be connected to the inlet pipework upstream of the throttle body.
your ECU yould be bolted to it.

Mass Air Flow meter.

The silver thing on the back of the airbox!

i took it to a bosch specialist earlier and he said that it might b th fuel ecu but nothing to do with the maf because thier seperate. would the fuel ecu solve my problem :)

pardon?
how on earth is it meant to calculate how much fuel it needs if it doesnt know the mass of air entering the cylinder?

i dwnt know. ok will the maf and ecu together solve my problem

maf - mass air flow. viewing from the front for your car its positioned to the left behind the headlamp unit. you cant miss it, its a big silver box with, if you have one, your air filter box or induction filter attached. other end of it has black pipe (fairly large bore) leading to the inlet manifold. :-)

yes i know were and what both do but will a new ones solve the problem of my car not starting?

only if its thats where the fault is.

i question the competence of your Bosch 'Specialist' what does he do? work in the power drill department?

yes there is a separate ign ECU, but to say the the MAF is not connected with fueling or the fueling ECU is nonsense

i thought the fuel ecu was attached to the AFM and the black ecu was the ignition side of it

that is correct, the ign ecu is clipped on to the bulkhead if i remember correctly.
