Any car that could achieve 252mph in 1937 gets my attention! They had 6.0 v16 motors producing almost 600bhp, and were the first mid engined cars also iirc.
Check what the book of lies says http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_Union Also I was very interested to see that they, along with three other companies used the four interlocked ring design which as we know is now exclusive to Audi.
Am I a n00b and is this a well known company/car? lol (sill reading info on it now) :)

Cant say i've ever heard of it/them! Looks like a fookin weapon though!! Love the biggle helmet/goggles combo, lol
Looks like a modded plane lol
lol yeah ^ I think the 'Audi' badge looks crazy too. Also read some interesting craic on VW/VAG being saved after WWII by the Allied forces and then sold under the name 'Victory Wagon' in the USA lol

Auto Union v Mercedes it was in the 30's and early 40's I think, proper formula 1 racing.
Hitler's way of showing how great the Germans were, both compaines kept on upping the stakes until sadly Bernd Royshcmer (spelling all to pot) died trying to beat the record, I believe there is a memorial spot in Germany still maintained.
Tazio Nuvolari was one of the other stars for Auto Union, an absolute genius behind the wheel.

Drum brakes = FAIL
Drum brakes = FAIL
Especially when trying to slow down from 160+
P.S Useless fact. The national racing colour of Germany was (maybe is) white. The Mercedes were overweight so had all the paint and filler stripped off to reveal the silver hand beaten panels. The silver colour stayed
Silver is the national colour of Germany.... no idea when/if it ever had been different

IIRC white is Japans national colour??!!
EDIT: white is germany, white is also Japan but with red sun.
I'll have to dig out my book on F1 pre war, loads of (un)interesting stuff to post about!
