View Full Version : My insurance dilemma?

basically i have two cars that i want to insure at the same time. all year i have insured about 5-6 cars and i am constantly ringing up my insurer (elephant) to change vehicles, which costs money and is hassle for everybody. iv been getting certificates posted constantly.
my renewal is due in a week or two and i was planning on going onto traders as i am 23 now and last year i checked and it was £1137 for me on any car (apart from imports). first problem is that my mr2 is an import so id have to find one which insures me. secondly, its kind of illegal as im not a trader, even though within the past 12 months the dvla will know iv bought and sold 10+ cars. thirdly, even though all of the asains around here get away with these policies and drive anything (even my mates do it) i cant see it working with me.
so my problem is, do i search for a traders which will insure me on imports? or do i ring up elephant and TRY and get them to insure my two cars (theyre around 900-1k each to insure) for a discount, id be happy if the second car had a 50% discount, ie. £1400-1500 for both. i asked them about this last year but they said no, so when i ring up this time is there any tips for me to convince them? i honestly dont see why they wont, as im the only driver on the policy so if anyone else drives the cars itl be to do with the other insurers. and also if they say no to me, il just go elsewhere so theyl loose money. they know that both cars will not be driven at the same time and to save me ringing them weekly to swap cars they will actually be getting £500 more off me for having both insured.
what are my chances? i actually want to argue my case rather than just being told no and leaving it at that.
also, i am planning on a third car, and maybe a fourth in the near future but id rather come to that bridge when it happens rather than going on traders now with only 2 cars...
essay over :)

Some companies do multi car policies, that might be a way to go? Or get traders insurance and sell the MR2 which is a girls car anyway;) lol !

elephant has always been the cheapest for me, and nobody else will touch me with the mr2 as its an imort and a turbo and i had 0ncb.
il just have to phone them and see what they say, but i dont see why they cant help me out as theyl get more money off me. and if and when i think its a girls car, il just sell it and buy something else so il still be in the same problem :).

looks like i best shop around then and see if theyl cover me on imports.
think the best thing then is to ring elephant 2moro and see what they say. if they say no to me il tell them i wont bother renewing at all then (on the 14th) and then ring other companies up. and you never know, but elephant may give me a call back :) hope i sort something out, i want to be able to drive both my cars whenever i want!

just get elephant told i went mental about my premium and they knocked £300 off. I did have 7 points at the time driving a 2.0 16v calibra so went from £700 to £400 :thumb: result

that is a result Lol
just quickly did a quote for both on admiral online, comes up with £1885,45.
not bad for the first attempt i suppose, il see what i can do to get it down

£1670 now

just tested it with a nova rather than the mr2 and its £1332.
looks like 1670 is as cheap as i can get that, any others i could try? and do you know if these charge for change of vehicle?
In the eyes of the law you would be classed as a trader with buying and selling so many cars in 12 month period.
Hmm, 300 more to have an MR2 turbo than a Nova. I know which I'd go for lol
Do you actually need to be registered as a business to have a trader policy though? I'm sure I've heard of some companies asking for evidence of you being a business, but I guess thats uncommon at best.
Multicar is rubbish tbh. I had a quote from admiral for the GT4 and a Nova, and it was the same price as insuring them on two separate policies!
In my experience, Elephant are usually cheaper than admiral too.
Ring up Sky, HIC, Flux and talk to them. All cover imports, and all will give discount for multiple policies. If you can get away with a trader policy though, I'd go for that mainly as you keep changing cars. Although I have to ask why... lol

for the traders all iv got to say is that im a part time second hand car dealer and could give any name for my 'business'. however tho if i was ever to claim i doubt they would pay out, but as for the cops i think itl be legal enough.
il give elephant a call today and after that il try those companies u suggested razor, cheers.
and in answer to the question why i change my cars so much? iv no idea lol i keep finding bargains and find it too hard to say no. for example, this week im picking up a corsa for less than £50! idiots around here have no idea about cars sometimes...
If you claim they pay out at trade prices not reatil thats the only difference. Ive had traders policy for years (well gave i up now as no longer trading).
Otherwise just get a fully comp policy which enables to drive any other car and stick the 2nd car in your mums name and drive it legally. So insist the other car is insured but not all.

which traders company did you use? im 23, but most want you to be 25 or over.
Try www.unicominsurance.com (http://www.unicominsurance.com) they were far cheaper than tradex etc, also try choicequote main prob them is there scousers and you will struggle to understand a word they say.
EDIT: noticed your nothern too so might stand a chance.
No honestly i was insured with them for 2 years and never once understood a ****ing word they were saying. managed to find someone a bit more milder and always asked for them, if it was there day off i would wait.

elephant is the same, they're either nigerian or scouse. i have been driving around with the wrong registration a few times because of their stupidity in understanding a simple letter of the alphabet.
cheers for the companies, il give them a try!

choicequote have given me a quote of £1203. thats me on my own name with no other drivers. i havnt got time to try out the other options to get it down as iv got work now so il try later.
'The premium shown is an indication only and will not necessarily reflect the actual premium payable or terms available. Factors such as the vehicles you deal with, your trading activities and personal details will need to be verified by one of our Advisors to confirm the quotation'
will this be a problem Lol?
Nah all they want is photocopies of logbooks and sales/pruchase reciepts.
Just use word to fabricate some up.
TBH unicom were nearly half choicequote for me.

il try unicom first then, cheers.
the logbooks wont be a problem as iv got loads of corsa and nova ones which i havnt sent as scrapped yet. but i dont do reciept apart from scratty pieces of paper saying sold as seen lol
Easy to fabricate stuff, unicom dont ask for anything.

just rang up and the price went from £1200 to over £1700, i then had to explain i dont buy cat write offs so he put it back down to £1260 :) im very happy with that to be honest seen as its nearly the same price as insuring just one car over 12 months. all i need to do is ring up later today and pay them Lol.
happy times :)
lol i only ever used to buy cat c and d's never charged me more, thats maybe why now they are.

lol i never buy write offs anyway. i just buy legal sheds and scrap them. on a plus tho, they didnt ask me for any proof of anything, i said i buy on average 10 cars a year.
cheers for the recommendation by the way, great help.
No probs mate glad to help.
give www.roadrunnerinsurance.co.uk a try thats who i'm with and they never had a problem with my import fd3s rx7...
if they have an age restriction (im 22 but on my bro's policy he's 28) then i will get you a number for another company. my mate has just had a quote, hes 22 also for his own trade policy was around £650 a year, just restricted a little. ie cant drive cossies, m3's aston martins, tvr's things like that...

On reading the title I thought that you had bought a white Yaris lol
Im with elephant at the mo bud and ive noticed they all seem to be like the "internet service providings" guy from fonejacker untill lately theyre all english:thumb:
Im sure ive heard on one of the on hold recordings that they offer multi-car policies do they not, or am i confuddled?
LMFAO internet service providings lol
Yeah, elephant tend to use the indian callcentres, whilst admiral primarily use the UK based ones. They will swap between the two though.
They, and admiral, do offer multi car insurance policies, but as I said earlier in the thread I've yet to find that to be cheaper than having two seperate policies with whatever company is the cheapest.
LMFAO internet service providings lol
Im yet to recieve my "free ring ding" as yet though, all i seem to recieve are sky high insurance costs:cry:
