is it cheaper (insurance wise) to buy a gsi OR put a gsi engine into a 1.2?

and also

if you do do an engine conversion, then do you run the quote as a 1.6gsi with engine conversion OR a 1.2 with engine conversion :S

cheers!!!

If you do the engine conversion on a 1.2 it will be modified unsure on the gsi but why not just get a quote for both by yourself?

And the second one i take it you mean a 2.0 conversion? and AFAIK it would be the same?

Where does he say about a 2.0 conversion?

It will probably cheaper to insure a standard GSi than a modified 1.2 with a 1.6 engine, the standard car would also allow you access to more insurance companies (instead of being limited to ones that cover engine conversions). The quote would be for a 1.2 Nova with a 1.6 engine conversion.

cheers RJ, sorry AWo6 i didnt make myself very clear

it was which would be cheaper between:
1:insuring a 1.6gsi
2: insuring a 1.2 with a 1.6gsi in it (thats what i meant by engine conversion)

i only ask as when i read through the insurance forum, EVERYONE and i mean EVERYONE has a better quote than me? i pay 500, under my mums insurance who has X amount of NCB and is 55, and is a university Dr on a 1.2??

and people on here are getting insured on here on bigger engines for less money with far 'good points' on there quotes!

thanks for the replies!

p.s. i am getting quotes but ive so far not had cheaper than 1800 :( and thats lieing about having an alarm and not doing any mods (note: i wont lie on my actual insurance it was just purely to see what quote would come out) thanks!!

How old are you? How many years NCB? It all makes a difference. Your age will be the biggest factor IMO.

20 0NCB, i realise how that looks but if you browse the insurance forums there are alot of people in the same position with better quotes on there own insurance, im trying to go as a named driver and still getting bad ones!

Going as a named driver will not help your cause. Get your own policy and build those NC's up. Assuming you passed at 17 you have lost three years there.

phone up and get your own quotes.

Yeah i passed at 18, the cheapest quotes i could get were 1400, on my mums last year was 450 this year 500, so i have saved 1850 in two years through not getting my NCB, but yes, i understand entirely what your saying, im impatient and 'in the long run' never really appeals to me :(

thanks though!

well you must accept the quotes you are now given and be prepared to pay now for what you should have paid 2 years ago.

I'd say £500 for a 1.2 at 20 with 0NCB is about right. If I remember rightly, I was paying ~£350 to insure my 1.2 at that age with a few years NCB, back in the day.

Incidentally, putting a parent down as the main driver when they aren't is called fronting, and technically insurance fraud, so be very careful how you go with that one.

As meritlover said, unfortunately new/inexperienced drivers pay big insurance - even if you have been driving for a few years, the fact you have 0NCB means you're inexperienced in the eyes of insurance. When I were a lad (I feel old now lol) people used to buy sheds as their first cars that were cheap to insure to get their first year NCB, then move on from there.

As you're over 19, try getting a quote from Sky, HIC or Adrian Flux (the latter gives discount for paid PNG membership). Also think about Admiral and Elephant, both offer discounts if you add your mum/dad/sister/cat/gerbil as a second driver. Some insurance companies also give small discounts for those who have been driving on a company policy, or as a named driver, so ask about that when getting quotes.

they wouldnt discount me when i tried to make my gerbil a named driver. only if it was my partner or spouse :(. so dont try Admiral

its only 500 pound under my mums name RJ

under my name at 20 with 0NCB but 2 year exp its still 1400!

but thanks very good points, and duely noted about 'fronting' when sorting out my insurance this year the insurer (sorry about making up words), recommended that!! which is abit naughty!!

haha course they didnt merit lover? gerbils struggle to get insured on bad boy cars given there rep!
