View Full Version : Group Buy - Rose Jointed Steering Arms (track rod end replacements)

trackdaynova
05-10-08, 09:37 PM
Hi All,

Not sure if there are any rules on group-buys etc, but I'll roll with it anyway, and if I need to ask anyone, or put it somewhere different then so be it.

I am doing a group buy on Rose Jointed Steering Arms, which are basically a direct replacement for your track rod ends, but better.

The benefit of these, are that if you run your car low, doesn't matter how low, and experience slight or dramtic bumpsteer from your steering arms not being horizontal (ie: going up towards the outside the car).

So with these, you can run your rosejointed steering arms BELOW your hub carrier, and are totally adjustable so you can set the height exactly as you want it, thus keeping your arms horizontal to maintain excellent handling.

This is the best option you could possibly have, better than inverted hubs to make your trackrod ends going up instead of down, because again - you will have the ability to alter the plunge angle.

These are obviously available for Novas, Corsas and Tigras.

The price, should we get 11 or more people, is £80 delivered to your door for the pair, including the rosejoints themselves.

Here is a photos of exactly what you'll get for your money

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q161/neocapture/nc1092.jpg

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q161/neocapture/nc1093.jpg

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q161/neocapture/nc1094.jpg

All you will need to alter on your actual hub carrier, is to get the hole drilled out, as currently it has a tapered insert in it, and obviously it needs to be the same bore all the way down for the bolt to pass through, to ensure there is no play.

A must for any track car imo :thumb:

Any questions please ask below, alternatively please start a list for those that are intersted.

Thanks for reading

Olly

Just to add:
All the arms are made from stainless steel so they wont rust if its a show car, the bearings are of a high quality with a 28,000lb loading spherical joint!

looked into these 2 1/2 yrs ago, thats a good price you have sourced!!

Pistol Pete

Screwing onto the steering arm part i understand. Once i have drilled out the hub carrier, what holds the bolt/RJ in place? The diameter of the collars and the bolt head look the same so what stops it falling through?! But yeah some pics would be great. Thanks. I am certainly interested, especially at that price!

Would it not be easier to use female rose joints?

Or is there a specific reason for using the adaptor and male rose joints?

I'm provisionally interested. Put me down as an 80% maybe.

Ah, just spotted the reason, left hand threaded rose joints! save unbolting from the hub.

im interested, where in the midlands are you??

trackdaynova
05-10-08, 10:42 PM
Pete - ahhh I see your confusion, they're not collars, they're the spacers so you can choose what height you want them at... that should clear up what you were unsure off the first time around.

You only drill out your current hole as big as the thread on the bolt, which I can find out ASAP :)

game1 - add your name by copying & pasting the list please pal

NovaGuy - this is exactly what they run on the WRC and Works cars, and the "sleeve" makes it a left hand thread which retains full adjustability on the car itself.

I am located in Leicestershire, but collection isn't and option as I'm not holding stock of these

NovaGuy - just to confirm its generally impossible to find one with a long enough shank that has the bearing end big enough with the correct threaded end for the steering arm.

Their use is also derived from competition in motorsport environments where carrying spare bearings in a standard form is cheaper and easier than holding 'specials' designed for purpose. :thumb:

I know I'm being thick here but surely the bolts needs to be longer or do you only run one of the spacers?

trackdaynova
05-10-08, 11:53 PM
Nah you're not being thick mate, those black things up against the RJ's are compressable rubber dust seals, which I actually bought seperately, so they compress to 'next to nothing', and expand over the whole RJ face, if you get me...

Therefore, if you run both spacers, say, under the hub carrier, and above the RJ (ie: mega low) you'd still have plenty of thread poking thru pasted the nylock nut :thumb:

The Simps
05-10-08, 11:57 PM
That makes more sense now!

These seem a much better option than raising the rack like I was and probably cheaper!

What are the payment options?

Paypal (add 3.9%)
Cheque
Bank Transfer could also be an option

Why do you need them? My steering arms have no plays in them whatsoever. The ride height my car sits at now means the arms are level anyhow. There is nothing to be gained by a lower COG unless your modifying the suspension mounting points (like the rear off my car). My front setup uses standard height turrets so the only way I could get the car to sit really low (and have the need for these) would be by using a very short springs and have hardly any damper travel (not good). On my rear with 9" springs my coilover platform is an inch from the top, this means I have full travel on the damper.
Can someone explain why there needed apart from the above scenario? Before someone states 'race cars like BTCC cars use them', they are also on modified mounting points, that damper and springs are still full size just mounted higher up.

trackdaynova
07-10-08, 06:00 PM
No one has stated anything about "needing them", and nothing has been mentioned in regards to whether you're current arms have play in them... :)

Further more, whose mentioned lowering the COG on this for sale/ group buy thread? I think you've posted a wrong reply, as that should be in my WIP I think?

As for your arms being level Rob, they come level from factory iirc, so you must be running a standard Nova ride height? because if your has been lowered at all, then your rack will be lower than standard, accompanied by you adding bigger wheels from factory (15s instead of 13s) then your hub mounting point (read: TRE) will be higher.

So if your car / rack has moved down/ lowered, and your hubs have moved up (bigger wheels) - then well done for maintaining the level steering arms :) Unless I'm mistaken?

Anyhow, this isn't only for track cars only, its for anyone. If you experience any kind of bumpsteer, due to your arms not being at the correct angle, this will eliminate this.

As stated in my original post

The benefit of these, are that if you run your car low, doesn't matter how low, and experience slight or dramtic bumpsteer from your steering arms not being horizontal

These have been marketed for 'lowered cars/track cars'. Forgive me for putting two and two together, I forgot most people lower there car for 'looks'.

Look at a standard nova (like the 1.0), you find the standard steering arms actually drop down from the rack slightly. When I said my arms were straight, I should of put '-ish' at the end. There is no more than 10 deg (I haven't measured so over compensated to save future arguements). I have included a pic, be it without the complete engine in (block in), the springs hardly compress with the engine in as there the correct poundage for the engine.

I must agree though on a stupidly low car they will be good, but if the car is that low how much suspension travel is left, or more to the point how much damping can the dampers do?

how big diameter are the bolts that are going to pass through the knuckle? will an insert be needed for the knuckle to take up the slack on the bolt once drilled out?

not sure on exact size but somewhere in the thread it did say it needs to be a tight fit once drilled so I'm guessing its the same width as the top of the taper?

Simps, of course it'll have to be a tight fit. That bolt will have to be a min of the diameter as the largest parts of the std TRE.

Adam
07-10-08, 06:34 PM
If it wasn't tight youd have play in the track rod end. So aye it'll have to tight, somehow.

spanishfly
07-10-08, 06:36 PM
And you wouldn't wanna rely on tightening it very tight.

Jonlem
07-10-08, 07:04 PM
I feel the benefit is actually having the adjustment in changing the position of the TRE, the fact it is rose jointed is of little issue as it can only move where a normal TRE would, you can however and the kit is designed and used in motorsport applications so that you use different side spacers on the fixing for potentially different events that require the car to be run at different heights.

The fact you can set the steering arms straight to help against bump steer is quite simply what this group buy is for, nothing else, I am sure anyone who competes with a nova would already have something very similar or appreciate that if you change the height of the car that the steering arm angles will change and thus effect the handling a little. It depends what you want from a car really, in some peoples cases its small adjustments like these do, when you have gone the full hog like Olz, Ben, Lee and Spanish have then having as much adjustment as possible is perfect, ofcourse the key is knowing what works but having so much adjustment can only help you towards getting the handling your looking for.

If the TRE is designed to run without a insert then I cant see a issue, if they are I'd imagine they would come supplied with the kit.

apologies for any typos or grammar mistakes, i'm on here using a 2" screen lol

Agree with what you say there Jon, but as my pic of my rack shows at the ride height I run I don't seem to have a problem with excessive steering arm angle. Maybe i'm lucky or my car is bent?

well i cant honestly see how the bolt is going to be a tight enough fit through the knuckle without it being a tapered fit like the originals are, sureley it would eventually start elongating it/becoming worn

I agree there matey.

Also didn't Rick Draper have a problem inverting his TRE?

Am i missing something here..surely you can turn the original track rod end upsidedown:confused:

thats actually fairly tricky to do, as you need to drill the hub out, then fit an insert and redrill the taper the wrong way round
any gen on what size the bolts through the joint are?

i asked this on the mig thread but was told to ask here instead, so...
how big diameter are the bolts that are going to pass through the knuckle? will an insert be needed for the knuckle to take up the slack on the bolt once drilled out?

This is because Olly set up the group buy and i felt would be able to answer your question better. I didnt want to risk you being given wrong information.:) Hope that clears that up for you.

Could you not tap a thread until the knuckle?

Been away this evening hence no replies.

I've currently received 5 Paypal payments, thanks very much to those, and also 4 people sending cheques, which will obviously have to clear etc before anything is sent out.

The reason why these are better than inverted hub carriers, is simply because Jonboy had some made, drilled out, and a new tapered insert put in upside down, to accept an OE TRE upside down and it cost the best part of £70 anyway, then you're still using OE trackrod ends, and you have no adjustability should you want to raise it a little, or drop it.

As for Rick Draper having problems, I wasn't aware of this, I actually didn't think his car did many road miles/ track miles to actually state whether they were good or not.

Lee - as you know, its entirely upto you whether you want to have a thin sleeve made and the hole made a little bigger in the hub carrier for the bolt to pass through, alternatively get hole drilled to match the size of the bolt itself, like the RJ is. Just like our tiebars are done, they're not sleaved yet a bolt passes through metal, and tightened tight tight, thus clamping the RJ.

Please let me re-iterate something, I am not twisting anyones arms to buy these, so if you like the idea, you can see the benefits, great, buy some, if you don't, then don't buy any. Simple. :)

Ash
07-10-08, 11:44 PM
Will there be another round of these? If not I'm on the list too.

*Achoo* :)

I can see the point about the lack of tapered edge, but thats something I can resolve myself. With a laterial force I wouldn't want to trust just the clamp of a nut and bolt, even if it is a couple mm or less.

novashed
08-10-08, 12:19 AM
RJ's are used in all forms of motorsportunder loads more stress than a nova is ever going to put it through, this application is fine in my view, and far superior than some motorfactor cheap steering rod end lol, like ols said there has been no pushyness here, just a good solution for along standing dilemnamany a lowered nova owner has had.

p.s still convincing the missus, getting there.

loggyboy

I'l be up for the 2nd round of production. Im tempted to by a few sets and ebay them as I reckon they fly off the shelves.

lee303
08-10-08, 05:01 PM
i have no concept of pushiness here, i was just asking, as i would like to know, its not really 'up to me' if i have the thing sleeved, that should be part of the kit if needed imo, if the bolt is an M10 then you will need to have the thing sleeved, as the hub is 12mm minimum diameter once drilled, on the r/j's i use i have inserts that fit inside the joint to clamp the ball using an m10 bolt which is a tight fit through the insert
but the pics here look like the spacers are just that, spacers, not inserted into the r/j at all, which is why i ask, if the bolt is m12 then no issues at all, but it would need to be a shanked bolt where it passes through the hub
no issues not having a taper either imo, a decent locknut like a 'k' nut would be on my list though, rather than a nylock
again, i feel i need to reassure that i'm not having a pop, but think people should be able to ask before they buy:thumb:

trackdaynova
08-10-08, 05:09 PM
Ahhh, gotcha now :thumb:

The hex-head bolt that passes through the hub carrier is an M12 bolt, and is also plain shanked, so where it passes through the hub there are no threads.

For those people who have purchased a set, or intersted in doing so. I do feel obliged to say to please take your hubs to a machinist to get flat drilled out on a pillar drill, to the correct size, rather than using a hand held drill yourself, with the incorrect drill size, or a crap one, and just opening it out expecting it to work. As we've spoke about, its crucial for the bolt hole to be very precise.

You are correct on the spacers, they are just spacers, not the inserted type that are used on the front tiebars ones (where they actually enter the lip of the ball from the RJ.

And of course you can ask before you buy, I welcome questions but just can't reply as soon as I would like to sometimes.

lee303
08-10-08, 05:41 PM
you'd want to drill undersize then ream it imo, as you cant actually drill a round hole with a hss drillbit(little know fact engineering fans) so not really a home job no

Yep i inverted the track rods when i had the old engine in, drive was terrible, wandered around a lot while driving along the road and was generally pretty sonky to drive.

The bolt supplied is NOT M12, it is 1/2inch, therefore the shank measures 12.65mm. To ensure you have the hole drilled the correct size - simply give the machine shop your hub, and bolt, and tell them it needs to fit snug :thumb:

Just waiting on 2 cheques to clear, and I'm going to give until Tuesday for those people that have apparently sent their payment (slowest postal service ever, obviously), and for those people who I'm still awaiting payment from.

Just a question, but.....

Why didnt you use a pair of female Rosejoints, some nylok nuts, pair of allen bolts, couple of spacers. Total cost: approx £30 per pair.

trackdaynova
14-10-08, 06:38 PM
1. Because they don't make rosejoints big or strong enough to be a replacement for a track rod end, with weedy threads like what are on Nova steering arms.

2. £30 for a pair you say? is that with the nylock nuts, allen bolts, spacers etc? lol says it all really, as important as they are, I wouldn't want to be skimping on fudge rosejoints @ £10 each or there abouts as you've worked out :)

Price is direct from Hughs & Holmes Engineering stockist's cheif. Was just wondering thats all as the kit youve got up seems just a tad overpriced for what it is really. Nylock nuts are like 20p each BTW, washers about 2p! lol

Already going to be doing uni-balls, which is a rosejointed replacement to the bottom ball joint, but they retail at £272 a pair lol they won't be that much, I can assure you.

Well done my friend :thumb: many good men have fallen trying to organise a group buy but you have done a top job in record time and deserve + rep and a sexual favour for your efforts!

I think i speak on behalf of ever one when i say thank you for bothering (were others wouldn't have ;)) to go out and sort the group buy from start to finish as it is a right logistical pain in the ass.....

THANKS :D :D :D

gh227 - go onto the Royal Mail website and use the code on the previous page of this thread to find out more information.

They were all sent out that day I said, all First Clas Recorded Delivery - so they MUST need a signature, unless they're sitting in your local Royal Mail depot :)
