car just randomly died on me last week, managed to tow it back home, gettin a spark and fuel, but no firing at all, reckon it might be the fuel pressure regulator ? i have about £20 to spend to fix it, if not, gotta sell it.

So you have fuel an spark, have you tested compression as thats the next big thing to check to see if you have got.

not a nova. 1.4i 8v ford escort, dont have a compression tester, that'l set me back the 20 quid, car was idling at the time of death, wasnt thrashing it.

Check the cambelt then to see if that has snapped.

cambelt hasnt gone. it was only half on at the camside, but its always been like that as long as ive had the car so i dont think the timings out, not hearing any knocking of metal to metal while cranking. most prob the head gasket or FPR, or maybe even both.. fckuit tho, cba with it anymore.. its a crappy ford. gave it a quick wash and hoover, will ring up salvage squad tommora, see if i can get something reasonable for it, if not sell it on the bay as spares or repair.
