How much would you pay for a standard redtop. Ive been offered one for £250. Its had new rings, new big end etc.

If you know the history is good then yes I would, however I nor anyone else can help you too much without knowing more.

I'd want to know who owned it,what car it came from, service history, how many miles it had ect..

But it's your choice, you get what you pay for !!

£250 Is good if your going to re-build it (I'd want to do that anyway) and it had over i guess 100,000+++

Depends on how much its worth to you really. £150-300 seems average, but personally id rather buy a scrap Cav/Cal/Astra for between £200-500 then sell the rest of the bits off and make the money back. T
hats how i did it, and i ended up getting the engine and brakes and about £50 proffit

I'd pay £200-250 for a complete one (i.e. with loom, ECU, gearbox, etc). I have seen them advertised - and sell - for around £400 though.

Got mine for £150 but needed loom & ECU and a couple hoses.

V6's used to be dirt cheap but even they seem to be up around £300 now :(

[edit] As loggyboy said though, buying the whole car (if you have space) is the way to go. You can probably sell bits off the car to make your money back.

£700 over here although I refuse to pay anymore than €400 (£350) for them COMPLETE.

jesus, you guys are cheap. here a XE with loom, ecu, gearbox etc. goes for about 500 to 600 euro. a c20let complete and with gearbox goes for about 2500 euro.

thats all with about 100,000 miles on m.

Thanks for the replies. Is there much differance between a redtop and ecotec. Obviousley price

Dod

Yeah iirc 15bhp, millions of sensors, key chips and transponders and RELIABILITY!!!

I paid £350 for a mk2 Astra GTE 16v, made just over £400 in parts. I kept the engine, g/box, ancileries, digi dash and rear beam. Thats the best way IMO.

I sometimes think the ecotec gets a bad press. Yes its down on power over the xe, but with a rebuild, and a few choice mods it would still be a good engine. With the sensors, it will just require abit more work with the wiring.

as far as i know the bottom end is the same. i will probably get slaughtered now.

difference between red-top and eco-tec is that eco-tecs are better

Every Big Block Ecotec I had I killed. I've currently got 4 Red Tops and a fes 2.0 8vs and never killed them.

The order of reliability imo from worst to best is as follows.

Ecotec (****e) Red Top (Valve Stem Seals and Head Gaskets) and 2.0 8v (keep it in oil)

I dont think its quite that bad, I didnt think they were all imoblised?

its a well known fact we are always about 3 years behind america and they are getting over 1000bhp out of eco-tecs!!! when was the last time you saw a 1000bhp let??

Dod
30-09-08, 04:35 PM
Burgo, I hate and dispise Big Block Ecotecs and unless you can supply me with one that can take as much abuse as a good 8 valver than my mind is made.

Big power is achievable, but can you thrash the ****e of it over a Back road or Hill road for an hour or 4 at a time. Thats what I want.

Get me one for my next saloon? :D

Yeah iirc 15bhp, millions of sensors, key chips and transponders and RELIABILITY!!!
Redetop will be older and higher mileage, more likely to be ranted too. I'd rather have a low mileage 135bhp ecotec for £100 than a high mileage redtop which is probably on less power due to age and wear...

If they called them powertec instead of ecotec, everyone would think they were better lol

Adam

2L ecotecs are as "**** and unreliable" as my 1600 ecotec

And they have hardly any more sensors than a xe ffs!, like 2/3 more than a xe

Iain's (Clean 2.0 Nova) showed at Brunters that there really isn't any performance differences between an Ecotec and an XE. I agree with RJ and the 'Powertec - Ecotec' comment totally, everyone has their own opinion/favoured engines but the Ecotec for some reason gets an overly negative name.

Long story short (I did type a massive reply but it was pretty uninteresting tbh lol), the main requirement for the car is no longer there, and I'll be moving around march/april time - having the celica is restricting the number of places I can get, let alone having two cars. I'll probably break the car, sell most of the parts, then look to buy another once I'm settled and have room to build another saloon.

Bit annoying really, as I spent so long building the damned thing, and as soon as I get it on the road, the requirement for it goes. Ho hum!

Na, I'm basing all my opinions on experience and all the big block Ecotecs are rubbish, never lasted or took abuse. Even service parts tend to be more expensive. TBH the engines that I'd swear by are the Big Block 8vs.

SEH FTW!!!

0-60mph in an astra is a 1sec gap.

i had an ecotec astra gsi fitted throttle boddies cams managment modifed head ect mad 185bhp but pinking should of made over 200bhp once set up brillant car to drive everyday than a xe on therottle boddies xe more fun on the track.
