View Full Version : ford transit axle trouble
at work, we have acquired a smiley faced transit pickup.
it makes a lot of noise from the rear axle under load (acceleration)
the noise stops under braking & when coasting.
I had a poke about & found nearly a quarter turn of play on the propshaft.
Is the diff totally knackered? or is there any adjustment that can be shimmed out????

tempting, but I'd rather get rid of the noise, its so bad, you'd think you were driving an ldv...........

OH YES THEY ARE!!!!!!!!!!!
did you manage to tune up that thing at work??????
seriously, I've never pulled a rear axle fully apart, I've done halfshaft seals & brakes on trucks & tractors over the years, but I could do with some advice on this transit....
Is a common problem on the old transits, you can pick up a rear diff for peanuts and its not exactly rocket science slapping it in.
Will be quicker and easier to swap rather than try shimming up the old etc.

Might also be due new pinion and diff bearings too. I remember the local ford van dealer used to get someone in to do them, as the monkeys were pretty useless at doing it, that was way back in '96.
