Finally decided to run my nova up to temperature this weekend after faffing getting the water pipes sorted.
The problem is though that when you start it up, it will idle for around 5 or 10 seconds, then the revs just carry on dipping until just cuts out. Also it won't rev over 2.5k rpm on full throttle.
Was wondering if my TPS was goosed or if something else was going wrong.
Cheers :thumb:

Get an engine management light rigged up and read the fault codes;)

ECU light is rigged up but goes out once I start the engine

Still got the diag plug? Read a code if any from that? Failing that check idle control valve, and TPS?

Does it still cut out if you give it a bit of throttle?

money is on the crank sensor

if you give it throttle it doesn't cut out but won't rev over 2.5k and isn't that willing to rev.
Stuart, is the crank sensor the one that is on the front of the block somewhere? :thumb:

I belive that is the crank sensor, yes.

Yep it is.

fyi the diag plugs on the car loom, not the engine loom.

If it was the crank sensor you would have the fault code logged, as with any sensor I would guess. The cutting out I would say idle valve as I've just had the same problem with mine. What engine was in there before? have you changed the fuel pump?

If it was the crank sensor you would have the fault code logged,

Not always, it depends on how the sensor breaks down. If the ECU still THINKS its getting a correct signal it wont flag a code.

Water temp sensors do this all the time, its annoying as funk!

fuel pressure / pump? have know these to give the same symptons.

GSI tank and pump I'm using guys :thumb:

i had this problem but mine wouldnt go past 5k and that was down to the crank sensor but i had no fault code this was on a mk3 astra gsi with a redtop

I think I've got a good crank sensor off a dizzy XE if needed.

Cheers, my mistake:thumb:. I have no idea when it comes to car electrics... hence why my XE has yet to have the loom wired up!!lol

Might sound silly but check for any water that may of got into the plug for the crank sensor.

Unplug the airflow meter and see if it revs any better

Cheers for the responses guys. I'll try all these things on Sunday when I finally get chance to work on the car again!
Does a crank sensor off a dispac XE work cos I can just steal the one off my missus xe if it does. If not, I'll be in touch adam :).
Rich, the water problem could actually be a cause as a had a thermostat to rad hose 'issue' over the weekend. lol

Dis pack crank sensor is different mate:(

Damn...well I'll try the other things and I'll be in touch if its not sorted thanks
Are the 8v ones differet too?

there are two types but as far as im aware they both work as its the same plug and they both do the same job. Just one is black and the other has a metal casing.

Dodgy idle.... id say the idle valve/stepper motor would be the 1st place to start, especily as its common for them to go wrong.

when you rev it to 2500 does it sounds like its hitting a limiter? If youve had water problems get the sensor out and give it a good clean up.

edit: i tried a dizzy crank sensor on a dispack car and it didnt fit in so doubt they are changable

What didn't it fit/\?
The plug?

icv??

yeah , but its more commonly know as an idle stepper motor on XEs as its a motored valve rather than a sprung one.

its looks like this,

http://www.tuneparts.co.uk/prod/is2.jpg

but its pain to get to as its right under the sfi bix and can only easily be reached from underneath!
I moved mine to here:

you can just see it under the brace with the u shape tube coming out.
