if i were to get a bicycle and attach an engine, would this then be classed as a motor bike ?

I would have thought so as it would be a motorised vehicle and in the picky as a mofo eyes of the law it would be classed as a motorbike i would guess tbh bud!

the way i see it is the electric bikes are surely classed as a motorised vehicle yet you dont need a licence or owt for one of them

I am sure if it is mechanically propelled and on the public highway then it needs to be licenced and insured mate.
*******s.

edit* Paul is that a GSX600 in the picture?

so an electric bike is some kind of loop hole then

Spudly

I think they are as they still retain the pedal mechanism and theyre only like 0.000000002 of a bhp so still classed as a pedal cycle i think!

It seems so, saying that though we aren't allowed Segways for some reason over here.
Worth a read up I guess, I just remember all the hassle people have had from using go-peds etc unlicenced. OAP's and the fat and lazy get to use those electric 'invalid carriages' too without a licence/insurance and I'd say they are worse than an electric bike, cos bikes don't expect free reign of the path lol

the only reason ive been thinking is that it takes me 2 hours to go 20 miles on the bus. so thats only 10 mph. i "could" pedal that fast but im lazy so was thinking of lobbing a little engine on to do it for me lol

as far as I can tell, an electric power assisted bike has no need for a uk licence, but you need to be aged 14 or over. it can only run at 15mph or less under its own power... which is the loophole that the sinclair C5 exploited, even though it looked like a urinal & went about as fast as one.........

I will keep looking for the regs on the petrol ones, but as far as I can tell, if the motor is directly driving, as opposed to a power assist, then it is in fact, a moped & needs tax, mot, insurance, licence......

If it's motorised and restricted to 14mph you don't need to tax or insure it. Must be over 16 years old aswell iirc.

Sold a few motorised bikes where I used to work.

There was an old lad locally with a push bike and i think a 25cc Petrol "Assistor" engine on the back, it used to go like **** and bellow blue smoke!! But it was legal, didnt require any tax or insurance and was always a laugh to see it.

burgo
22-09-08, 10:34 AM
so it seems then tha aslong as its used as an assistor and limited to 14mph its all legal :)

my work in project, nearly finished, its an aprilia sr 125 with 172 kit on it, on a scooter it topped at 83 and beat 1.8's to 60, should be fun on a push iron :D:D

But full loom & rad to go on... also its a "death trap" as everyone calls it... should be interesting :D

Dunno about the legality of it all, would of thaught you'd need to get it MOT'd tax'd & insured. As it will still be classed as a "motor bike"
