Hi all :thumb: In advance sorry about pics being a bit naff.

This is my d reg 1.2L.
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/MINE/IMG_0012-2.jpg

Basically bought due to my old sr having the dreaded car cancer. (will post pics a later date) not pretty.

My old 1.4 sr engine was running r1 carbs (fitted at bogg bros) at the time rebored to a 1425cc and arp bolts just to hold it together at bottom end.
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/MINE/IMG_0030.jpg

Sadly about 8 months ago the engine just locked up whilst at work. Reason cam belt jumping a tooth then deciding to strip all the teeth from the belt yeh (waste of brass then) bearing in mind that I had rebuilt it in the last 5 years about 10 times various headgaskets, followerers snapping blah blah blah.

So next plan, well start a fresh because that sr engine had been stripped down more times that a hooker, so I decided to source a c16xe as one of my mates was doing this conversion on his for his rally car.

Well I got one from the bay and was £350 which was a little top side you may think for a standard engine to say it had no wiring with it. Well it had been ported and polished on the head, a set of 278 cams, pocketed pistons and the vital arp bolts. Not too bad really.

By the way for the beadie eye boys and girls yes it is a c16 not the x16 as the cover is metal but the ports have been made to fit and only temporary anyhow until I can gets some funds for a wiring setup for the bike barbs (or possible better management).

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/MINE/IMG_0095.jpg

Next was a matter of stripping the engine bay and welding up any areas which may of gone rotten (experience hopefully paid off).

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/MINE/IMG_0142.jpg

Cleaned the rear hubs and clear lacquered

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/MINE/IMG_0146.jpg

Well not too bad at all. I also got hold of some strengthening plates for the strut top mounts as I am going to be running with soild ones. Also I have upgraded the engine mounts to solid ones (from Chris Astley) which should stiffen the old girl up a little. The steering should still be okay as the quikrack was spot on:)

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0103.jpg

Also here one of my old fk coilovers with my calibra 16v black diamond disks.
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0092.jpg

which was replaced by a newer version with the soild strut top mount
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0094.jpg

As I have been doing this I have had problems with the wiring as a loom I had and had been told it was for my engine turned out to be for the x16xe:(

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0115.jpg

I did however get the relevant ecu key and transponder but to no avail.
The reason being I had earthed out the ecu and kaput!!!

well this is where I am at now really.

Fitted the snowplough I bought in August and white indicators.

Just sourced a c16xe loom and ecu so I can actually get it nearly started:)

I've a few waterpipes to still get, the main one really is the one from the back of the head to the main intake pipe.

Also the exhaust to marry up, so aint that far really bearing in mind my 1.4 broke in december 07.

Oh and birds seem to have left messages all over it lol Must be because my mate is a Ford mechanic lol

Liking your project mate, good to see someone sticking with a small block engine for a change.

Personally id've stuck with the orange indicators, keeping with the retro looks. Other than that good work so far.

Cheers :thumb: yeh I've been a bit unsure myself to keep the white ones on or put the orange ones back on. I changed the rears to two reverse a while back but I'm now unsure on that as well.

Just a few updated pics from the last few weeks (pics a bit poor sorry)

Backend built back up

Mounting of the fuel pump

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/Fuelpumplocation.jpg

A random side shot (only one I have taken)

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/Sideshot.jpg

This was taken just after attaching the alternator. It shows the solid strut top nicely and welded top mount plates. The earths are only temporary placements to make sure everything was sparking correctly :thumb:

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/Struttop.jpg

Engine pic nearly there.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/Enginebay.jpg

So now all engine in, wires in just a matter of tiding the wiring behind the dash, to the connection of the c16 loom. It's been a bit of a pain really as a few wires were in poor condition, so had to re-solder lengths of wire to make a small loom (pics later). Air filter to attach and mount to do as well.

Here is a the Hulk RAAARRR lol

Your words lol lol lol lol

Nice looking project, would agree with an earlier comment about the orange indicators over the clears. With the snowplough you need a bit of colour back at the front, or you could add a bumper strips. Keep the updates coming:thumb:

Southie
14-11-08, 01:49 PM
Cheers Shaun very funny :D I am thinking of putting an orange stripe around, a bit like on the old sr's. Think its called "orcha orange". I'm going to have to get an old piece from somewhere to get a colour sample.

Shaun_O'Donnell
14-11-08, 02:00 PM
It's surprising what a difference the coloured stripe makes:

Mine before:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i203/Shaun_ODonnell/STA60035-1.jpg

After:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i203/Shaun_ODonnell/STA60007-2.jpg

I just went with off the shelf Halfords stuff, was too wide at first, but fitted it and trimmed insitu with a scalpel.

Steve
14-11-08, 02:03 PM
Would definitely break it up a bit, let me know if you find the right colour for it as im still looking for that to do my bumpers and rub strips. :thumb:

Good work so far mate, you're nearly there.

Southie
14-11-08, 02:26 PM
Shaun I totally agree. It does look 10 times better. Mine used to have a red strip originally but it made the colour of the car always appear dirty for some reason.

As questions go regarding my rubstrips. On the doors and wings my passenger side and the front wings both were solid grey, but when I took the red stripes off the drivers door, the red was built into the strip. Odd i thought.

Steve. If I find some I will PM you. I know someone who does vinyl signs so, as I work at a printers I have plenty of colours in a the pantone books we use.

Cheers Jonny :thumb: Apart from getting some orange bumper tape (cheers Royston) sadly no :( Oh and another set of MK1 sr clocks (cheers Euro_SBD) :D

Not much to do really just need a exhaust attachment to connect my existing stainless middle section to the stainless manifold, which I will probably take to Zorstec in Shipley, solder a few wires behind the speedo and run the fuel lines to the pump thats about it.

Hopefully selling my van this week so I should be able to fund getting the Nova back as It will need tax, mot and insuring :(

Hi guys,

not really been up to much on the car as it's been Baltic but here are some random engine bay shots just to show how clean it is. All the usual places you find the rust are pretty good for 24 years :thumb: Boredom is a virtue lol

Oh also bought another 1.4 sr engine the other day (cheers Olly755 a top bloke) to start a rebuild I have in mind for the bike carbs ;) as I don't want to get rid of the carbs and cams...

I suppose the orange ones aren't as in your face once the headlamp protectors are on and whats the rest of your plans interior wise, engine mods etc.

I suppose the orange ones aren't as in your face once the headlamp protectors are on and whats the rest of your plans interior wise, engine mods etc.

The engine has already been ported and polished, sbd cammed and has stainless exhaust manifold so that's it for the time being. Maybe throttle bodys in the future. I was going to bike carb it but not going to now.

As for the interior is staying standard, as I don't want to change the appearance of it.

That's a really nice lookin car! well done. If I ever do another nova I'd like a mk1 snow plough affair.

Are you sure yours is a c16? with that cam cover and inlet, looks to be out of a corsa/tigra. I thought they were x16, and the c16 was the mini-redtop from earlier stuff? I could be totally wrong on this though.

110% sure it's a c16xe as I have seen the stamp on it :thumb:

The c16xe came out of a corsa gsi by the way. The inlets on the gsi were plastic but I didn't want a plastic one so went for the x16xe ( metal one ) lol

oh of course they did, silly me! Didn't they change it on the later 1.6 sport to x16xe? iirc I seem to remember early GSI engines had problems with tensioner bearings seizing? all those dodgy ones have probably been fixed or blown by now though! hahahahahahalollol

If it helps get my car started then I will have it lol

Well not much progress (running wise)

Manage to sort my exhaust out though so it now marries up with my existing powerflow. Had to cut and weld a section from a down pipe from an existing corsa sport exhaust i got from the scrappers, so the flange would attach from my stainless manifold. My powerflow one is a mild steel so I was able to weld it to fit.

As for the running, well it's naff. I've fuel, spark, all pipes and sensors on and wired up correctly but when I fire it up it just pops and bangs, then cuts out :( It just seem like the timing is out. I've tried it with the fuel pump running constantly but still to no avail.

The best step next is scrap it lol

Don't give up mate, at least has got more chance of running than mine has! lol Sure it'll turn out to be something simple.

Ask adam, he seems to be a bit of a guru on these engines.

Cheers Steve, I hope its something simple :thumb: Yours nearly sorted then???

I've noticed Adam is the smallblock God lol I've picked Baxters and AW06's brains for the time being Cheers guys. :D Just didn't want to hassle him as he's just finished sorting Baxters out.

I will try a couple of other things then the final straw will be the God lol

... shhh it's ALIVE lol

Thanks to everyone who has helped me with your comments via posts and PM's (adam, AW06, baxter, burgo, ck and anyone else I may have forgot) really appreciated :thumb:

Yes well it fires up and runs but have to keep my foot on the pedal or it cuts out. It's running lumpy, as it was firing on 3 but going to look into the air pipes around the throttlebody and inlet.
I checked the plugs and they all seem okay no wet or oily residue on them.

Off to the scrappers at the weekend to get another coilpak, just incase that's playing up.

It will be nice though when it's running properly and I can start giving it a good valet, mot and tax, fill her up and give her a proper drive/thrash :D

NOOOOOO the chrome was better

Right update time:
The car hasn't been running properly with the x16 inlet so I bit the bullet and sourced the c16xe throttlebody, inlet and injection rails.

Bye Bye I liked the chrome but oh well.

...at last it runs PROPERLY on its own without cutting out :D Then I had to turn it of as the fuel rail was leaking  but never mind I will strip it down AGAIN but use to it now lol

Cheers :D I think it was something mainly to do with the X16 stuff being wrong for the C16 loom. It had all the correct connectors but for some reason the engine wouldn't keep ticking over

Nice one, not really too keen on those wheels though if im honest. Gonna have to get some of that orange tape for mine I think, are you going to spray the door bottoms grey like an sr?

Southie
21-04-09, 03:01 PM
Funny you should say that Steve as I am just contemplating that myself on both counts. Not sure though which grey to use on the door bottoms.
I do know a couple of people who do vynal lettering so may have a word with them to see if they have any old stock as I may do that instead. Problem though they tend to hold water :(

Wheels wise I always go through the do I / don't I like them aswell. I'm actually wanting the larger offset SR ronal wheels. :D

I should also be picking up a MK1 SR boot spoiler unpainted from someone aswell GRATIS :D

Steve
21-04-09, 03:12 PM

Quick update for the small followers :)

Well the nova failed the mot on Friday for the rear brakes. Obviously being stood so long they were a bit seized but oh well it, PASSED on Saturday wooooop woooooop :)

Went to tax it and I cannot due to loosing the V5 :( what a numpty so I'm now going to have to fill in the forms and go to the dvla in Leeds. 2 hours wait but definatly going to be worth it as I drove it to the mot station and it was mental.
The cams sound lumpy as hell and it hates going at low speeds especially stool in traffic.

This time next week I hopefully should have some decent pics up to show you all since it been in a lockup all it's time since I joined up on here lol

Oh and the combo has been sold so I've no car until the nova's taxed, but thankfully I only live 3 miles from work. :D

AlexW
03-05-09, 08:23 PM
Woohoo, Sounds good dude. When i heard it failed on the rear brakes i knew it was due to being sat for so damm long.

And get some pics up you homo. Oh and have fun with the log book, i spent about 1month waiting for mine.

Southie
03-05-09, 08:31 PM
Homo you bum runner lol I've got the forms filled in so will be able to get the tax as it's the main dvla office. As regards to waiting for the logbook who cares as long as I can drive it :D :D :D

Thing what I was surprised at when driving to the mot was how bad the solid engine mounts weren't and also the strut top mounts didn't have a nasty metally tinkle noise I was expecting :D

AlexW
03-05-09, 08:33 PM
Aye that was one thing i was going to ask you about (Mounts) as mine are preety buggerd lol

Southie
03-05-09, 08:39 PM
I'd definatley recommend them if you like dashboard rattles lol
Nice and smooth though :)

Southie
08-05-09, 01:01 PM
Well I've been out in the car for the last few days and its awesome :D

Problems lol
Because of the lumpy cams it's a absolute barsteward to drive in slow traffic. Anything under 2,500rpm it judders like buggery so I have to keep it in low gears all the time.

On the odd occasion the eml light keeps coming on when I've hit a pothole or some other road obstruction, and also if I've been giving it a little pasty and then come to a holt it decides to just cut out and I always have to fire it back up.

When I came to drive it last night (first time in dark) when I put my lights on the temp and fuel gauge pi55ed off to the end of the gauges. Then this morning when I went to set off to work both the gauges had gone all the way around to the beginning under the gauge pins

But it's all fun and goes like stick :D. The cams I thing could do with adjusting but I have no adjustable veriers fitted.

Anyway happy days and the mission of getting it all working correctly continues. lol

I don't know Steve you and Sparkie are as bad as each other getting my mind in a twist with keeping bits on it lol

As regards to what's next well I have a mate who has a unpainted mk1 spoiler so that's going on soon but generally use it.
I've been having trouble with the running of the engine at low idle especially in traffic, it's a nightmare so basically start saving to get it rolling roaded and setup correctly.

Steve

Nice.. will be going getting it setup properly and seeing what it can do.

Cheers guys lol Small update.

Well for the past couple of weeks I have been trying to suss out the running problems.

Flash codes:
13 Oxygen sensor No change in voltage/open circuit.
24 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) No speed signal or low voltage
92 Camshaft sensor Faulty hall effect sensor or circuit

So need to get another Lambda sensor, try another transducer and it seems my new cam sensor is in a pickle due to the cams.

Bar that its running pretty damn well (after 3,500rpm) lol

Oh and the 4 spokes are coming off and I have got hold of some mk4 astra wheels similar to cesaros but slightly more chunkier. The ones with a bigger center cap. I always said that I didn't like those on a MK1 aswell lol but swapped them with tyres (2 bald though) for a pipercross airfilter.

I will get some pictures when I get some tyres on them.

Get me a bottle of scrumpy (the real deal) or GTFO lol

Here then but I've only put them on with mega tyres at the minute because tomorrow I'm putting some toyo 888's on the front and some other 195/45/15's tyres I've got kicking about.

Pic oddness for linking on my phone. Clicky (http://s345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/?action=view&current=photo-2.jpg)

There the ones Steve :) and rep for guessing lol

Yep I've not been able to sell them so balls to it I'm going to put the on this engine. Been having a chat with Tom Reid and hopefully soon I can sack off this inlet and injection. Back to the norm for me lol

Steve
27-06-09, 01:12 PM
Nice, ive always like those wheels, I reckon once people get sick of cesaros everyone will be after a set of them! lol They look good though, work well with the mk1. Tom reid knows what he's doing and you won't have to wait 2 months for an inlet, unlike bogg brothers.

AlexW

Well got all the wheels on now and personally I think they look pretty damn good. The toyo 888's handle like hell on the front shame I couldn't afford a full set as I have kumos on the back.

Southie
28-07-09, 02:30 PM
Small update. It's broke lol

Well it's it had a slight idling problem so I squirted wd40 around all the inlets to see if there was any noticeable difference, there wasn't. When revving to about 3k thought there was a distinctive rattle coming from the head which to me sounded like a follower hadn't seated correctly, so I decided to take the rocker off to see what the situation was.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0576.jpg

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0577.jpg

Oh and by the way I bought this engine two years ago and it's only just been taken apart by me now. Problem and I'm pretty feckked off to say the least is that at the time I was "told" it had SBD cams and other things done. :( :mad::mad: Lying tw@t.

Basically it's got GM stamped on the camshafts so unless they have been reworked (which I doubt) then someone has hand my pants down.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0578.jpg

Also when checking the followers, 3 of them are softer than flump sweets, basically shagged.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0581.jpg

Oh and finally the cam pulleys have been some what callafudged. Top hole in picture below should be the same size as on cam.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0579.jpg

So all in all fecked right off and gonna burn the fecking thing lol

AlexW
28-07-09, 02:34 PM
Bad luck mate :(

i have to say tho, im suprised youve never had the cam cover off tho.

Oh and the lifters should be soft if they have no oil in them

Southie
28-07-09, 02:43 PM
They were soft when in the car compared to the rest of them. When I took the three out they were soft even with oil in. :( Anyway ordering some more new ones.

Never taken the cover off as I didn't need to.

Cheers anyway. At least it's not a Tigra so I'm still happy. lol

AlexW
28-07-09, 02:44 PM
Ive taken mine off without needing too lol, on yours i woulda done it to check the cams lol

And dont bother with anything but vaux ones, known so many to fail.

Even tho GM ones seem to never fail, dont understand why yours have.... i dont think there acualy ****ed lol

Southie
28-07-09, 02:47 PM

Right update time. *note to self: you tit put your pictures back*

It's dead. :cry::cry::cry:

Well over lunch 07/09/09 I broke down woooooooooo :(

Going 60mph following traffic and my car decides to make a god awful racket, clatter bang bang clatter clatter (oh shiite). At first it sounded like there was no oil in it, anyway I ended up being sat at the end of a busy bypass waiting for my mate to come and rescue me "yet again" :(

So he got to my shed and towed me outside my work. Checked the oil and there was plenty in there. So whipped the cam cover off and  it's snapped the bolt holding my pulley, knacked the end of the cam lug and busted my cam sensor.

So next he went and got his trailer and took it up to his unit where I then started stripping the dam thing down again!!!

Some pictures.

The bolt which holds the cam pulley stuck in the cam. Also snapped the lug off.
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0641.jpg

Pieces of follower which hit the cam.
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0642.jpg

The cam. Kapooooow

Where the follower use to live.
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p379/SOUTHIE01/IMG_0643.jpg

My battery then went flat but its knackered so I'm some on the look out for another C16xe (maybe Baxters) or another 1.4 8 valve.

As ever money is tight so it's off the road for a bit. :(
