anyone tell me what engine this is from?

i know its a 1.6 but from a nova or what?

Judging by the rocker cover it looks like an early 80s engine, possibly mk2 cav or maybe a mk1 astra as its a carb model

It's not a Nova engine that's for sure. Possibly Cav or Astra.

16SV that is I think.

Bingo. Its running a Pierburg Carb but the breather is a different set up to any I've seen.
