It's also have the side seals re-painted and some gsi skirts fitted and a general tidy up on the paintwork. I've also got some new wheels and tyres coming and a perspex window kit to fit. Oh and i've also removed the graphics too :D

are you aiming for 350+hp on standard rods?

has the cage been fitted properly? just looks like it has not had any spreader plates welded into the shell before the cage bolts in? if it hasnt you want to do this before painting the inside.

awesome car anyhow mate :D

Car has standard rods and crank, everything else has been uprated including pistions :D Are the standard rods, really a problem at this sort of power  cars is running 323bhp

http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105417

Previous owner said they are good for 400bhp

Will get round to taking some pics soon as car is now painted, new wheels, etc :D

burgo
29-09-08, 05:00 PM
they probably will take 400 bhp for a while but for the sake of £500 is it worth risking the engine

game1
29-09-08, 05:17 PM
Not planning on running 400bhp, 330-350bhp is more than enough for me and that will only be now and then as when I have a boost controller fitted I plan to run two boost settings:- 1bar (normal use) and 1.4/1.5bar (when needed) I thought high revs are what kills rods and car wont be reving any higher than factory.

burgo
29-09-08, 05:18 PM
its is normally revs yes but when you've got as much torque as you have then i would think about upgrading

game1
29-09-08, 05:35 PM
O.k will have to put some on my christmas list then :D any ideas as to who sells them at a good price

:D cheers for the comments. Side exit isn't too noisy to be honest and isn't a problem with speed bumps either - suprisingly.

Simps - hope your right mate. Checked the tyre pressures today and may sound daft, but had 36 and 33 in fronts and 33 in both rears - bloody tyre fitters  have now put 27 in front and 29 in rear and even that has made a difference. Once shaft is in will also be having the tracking checked too and may even lower the front a little more?

looks like youve got some nasty overspray in the n/s/r arch there, paint inside black will look 100x better

overall i think this cars stinning, loving the black bonnet, suits it well :thumb:

burgo
13-10-08, 08:05 PM
if you are going to lower it more do it before the tracking. also carnie at northwest tyres is my recommendation

game1
13-10-08, 09:51 PM
Overspray is from when I just had the seals re-done. Will be painting overspray bits black very soon and undersealing the car over the winter.

Mate of mine works for ford in Market Harborough, he's fitting the shaft for me, lowering the front end a tad, fitting splitter and then checking tracking :thumb:

25-10-08, 11:18 AM
Little update :D

Chris Astley equal shaft is now fitted, wow..... what a difference it's made  would say it's made about a 60% improvement on before and can almost drive it in a straight line now, lol

Have also sorted a few squeaks and rattles from inside the car. Overspray has now gone and tracking checked. Next on the list is an avcr boost controller. Going to Pod on 2nd Nov and see what times I can run, hoping for low 13's

krobinson
25-10-08, 11:24 AM
Car is stunning, really like that! You've hugely improved it from the previous owner.

With a stripped out nova running over 300bhp you should be in the 12's not 13's at the pod.

I think Mark Beeson ran low 13's on phase 2 with a full interior.

Edit: Have you a diff in the box?

Keith

Thanks :D

Yes, it has a quaife diff in it. It still struggles to put the power down, spins still in 4th with little effort. That's why I was thinking of around low 13's

Plan is to fit an avcr as from what I understand the boost levels can be set according to your speed. So plan is to run something like 1bar until 60mph to help keep grip, then have the boost rising up to 1.5bar once car has grip.

Adam
25-10-08, 11:47 AM
You should run 13s all day long.
Maybe high 12s if you get the launch right

corsakid

Told you it was worth doing :D

When you consider its the same price to buy the equal shafts new as buying the normal big block shafts new it seems silly not to do it for the sake of sourcing the fixed shaft. I'm fitting it to my XE build even tho really it doesn't need it but every bit helps.

:D I know, doesn't make sense to me either  why the previous owner didn't fit one to the car when he bought the motorsport shafts  The fixed shaft cost me £32 delivered and also had a drive shaft attached to it. Now have a drivers side motorsport shaft surpless, but I guess it's not worth alot, if anything

The thing is, it's only really being a well known mod for the last year or so. IIRC, Mark Beeson got the shaft custom made and set up a group buy on migweb, thats where I got mine.

Then Chris Astley made the shaft available and now everyone is seeing it as the better option.

I've been on the forums 8-10 years and I'd never heard it discussed before then :)

Had the car back on the rollers yesterday and had the boost turned down. It's now running 18psi - 1.25bar and is running 310bhp - 313lb-ft with 256bhp @ wheels. Was fed up of it spinning the wheels all the time and not being able to drive it hard. It now drives much better and am able to floor the accelerator from 4th upwards rather than having feather it :D Also didn't want the car overboosting with the cold weather with only running a bleed valve. I will however be putting the boost back up once i've had an avcr fitted.

Went there with a few mates (gtir, mondeo st, megane 225) and track wasn't dry until 3.30pm. About 10 cars got to run before they closed it down as the track was still to wet/damp and was unsafe to use. So..... roll on 2009 :D Car will be cleaned next week then garaged until feb/2009 and see what happens then :thumb:

It's clean on the outside, will be doing the engine bay over the winter - clean up and changing a few hoses and clips, etc... just to tart it up a little. It's not a show car - not into that, just want it to look tidy and track it :thumb:

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j247/MATTYGREEN/DSC03078.jpg

Just waiting for a few bits to come back from being powdercoated, then I can take to my mates to have the avcr fitted, also got to fit omex rev limiter with lauch control and omex sequential shift light. Also going to treat it to an oil and filter change.

Then get the avcr set up at tuners and start using it again :D

Took car to my mates last night and later found out my quaife diff is fooked   no wonder the car is spinning so easliy in 4th still and is hard to control. Has been like this since I bought it  case is being opened later today/tomorrow, so better be one in there  they come with life time warranty, so hopefully i should be able to get it exchanged.

If you jack the car so both front wheels are on the floor you will be able to tell if its diffed or not. IIRC out of gear if you turn one front wheel the other should turn in the same direction.

How have you arrived at the conclusion that your diff is broken?

game1
28-01-09, 06:56 PM
Car is dangerous to drive, you need to be in the middle of two lanes if you drive it hard, then when you do it's all over the place. Also same happens when you de-accelerate. I thought it was down to the car not having an equal length set-up. Have had one fitted now and it helped quite a bit, but still isn't as it should be. I'm use to 4wd myself so, just thought it was a case of getting use to the car. Mate who drove the car owns his own business and does z-tec conversions on fords, etc..... he said it's dangerous and somethings not right with the car, and came to the conclusion of the diff.

Car was jacked up. One wheel was held and someone else tried to turn the other wheel, which you can on mine. Also tried it on another car in his workshop that has a diff and if one wheel is held you can hardly turn the other, if at all. Also when we tried it on mine you can hear a clonking noise, almost like a bearing that has come lose and something seems to be a-drift inside?

Box is out of car, will be split open tomorrow, so will see.....

Souns all bit strange (not saying your stupid) just though i would ask, you have checked that theres no loose bolts/nuts to the shocks, or the tie bars or anything silly like that?? as it can happen, and also if your wheel offset is around say 45 and the wheels are not track/aligned right it will dart all over the shop with the power you have.

But if it's the diff thats broken that is bad luck, i hope it dose sort it out, and dont coast no more then £60 mate.

It definatly sounds like there's something up mate.

I've an F28, Quaiffe, Equal length shafts, Poweflex bush's and rose jointed tie bars.

My LET Nova with the Quaife diff and equal length shafts does this as well and the diff has only done about 200 miles. Was coming out of the motorway services in 2rd and nailed it and ended up going across the chevrons then back over to the hard shoulder, was dry as well

The control arm bushes are new as are track rod ends and bottom ball joints. Control arms have been plated on the bottom. Running rose jointed top mounts and tie bars. Tracking has been checked, toeing out 2 degrees.

It is torque steer I think but the diff seems to exaggerate it to me, before the diff it used to go to the left under hard acceleration but now it seems to try and correct itself and pulls itself the other way and then back and keeps doing this until you are doing a decent speed.

Recall Ricks car doing the same albeit with much more power.

A lot of Quaife LSD's act differently when old, infact someone I know of that has mapped a shed load of standard road spec Focus RS's said that you can feel slight differences in each car too as they run a ATB, kind of strange when you wouldn't expect that from a new diff but I'll take his word for it.

Mine never seemed to engage correctly on my nova so I spoke with Quaife about it and they said it might need a few parts replacing, they were very good about it though and they didn't quote me a lot.

Lee, 2mm toe out will be lively on road esp with a diff lol, good for corners though

I hope it's the diff with mine then? Should hear from quaife any day now.

This is the set-up on mine......

Spax rsx coilovers, Uprated front + rear springs (rear springs converted to 2 1/4 inboard race springs), Black Powerflex bushes, Rose jointed track rod ends, Quaife quick rack, Spherical top mounts, Uprated front + rear anti-roll bars, Front + rear strut braces. Equal length shaft set-up.

It was all set up by 'x-sport' racing and has 1 degree toe in and 2 degrees camber. The suspension was also set up by them, including corner weigh set-up, whatever that means

I seriously hope mine is more driveable once the diff has been serviced by quaife as like I say it's dangerous and can't see me keeping if it doesn't to be honest. I'll never be able to drive it hard on the road for fear of hitting another car

My mate Steve (bux on mig web) has a 12.1 sec corsa b let and his is no where near as bad as mine - that has a tran-x plate diff in it. He hasn't got an equal length set-up in his yet either.

I found with mine that I didn't get it on ultra smooth tarmac or circuit so put it down to the car simply tramlining.

It's going to cost the £60 service charge (life time warranty my ass  ) and courier costs of £21 postage each way, so just over £100 + labour and oil to fix it, still...... could have be worse I guess!

Clutch STILL hasn't arrived from Mardis Gras - promise after promise   but have been told it will be delivered to Wolverhampton tomorrow. Diff will be back on Monday, so all being well the car will be back together by the end of next week :D

Sorry to hear that Mardi Gras have messed you about, quite unusual of them to do that.

When I asked Quaife to look at mine it would of been chargeable, mine was second hand and I didn't have the receipt but I don't recall them even asking me that, the postage was the main cost though. Atleast it will be right now and people might realise that they do actually go wrong.

After waiting for the clutch to arrive, it didn't fit. The car has an xe lightened flywheel fitted and the helix needs to be fitted with a pot type flywheel. So I decided to have the original clutch put back in. Yes.... everyone slates the techniclutch, but after looking through my receipts, I found that the clutch was fitted new back in July'08 and has coped with 350lb-ft so far and still looks like new, so will replace it if and when needed (now selling helix 6 puk)

Looking at the car the tracking looks like it might be slightly out, looks like the n/s/f is running on the inner edge and the o/s/f on the outer. Also looking at the front anti roll bar, the o/s/f looks to be about 6" longer than the o/s/f?

When fitted the f28 you have to lower the tie bars to the bttom of the control arm and drop the tie bar brackets at the crossember. You'rs has only been done on one side. I'd fix that before you waste money on geometry checking because it will only need doing afterwards.

Collected my car last night and had the front anti roll bar removed before I picked it up. I spent a while reading through various posts on the forum about the pro's and con's of having a front anti roll bar and can honeslty say it has made a huge difference in removing it already. When driving it back down the M6 - moving between lanes you can actually feel the car/suspension move, where as before the whole front end use to skip about all over the place. Also you can feel the difference in the diff too, the whole car seems much better i'm pleased to say :D

I also had my mate take it to a wheel alignment centre today and here's the car results....... the tracking/toe was slightly out, which has been altered. The front end still has negative camber - should it have? I'm yet to drive it myself since being checked any thoughts?

did you have the apexi set up properly to try and eliminate wheel spin? boost vs rpm???

game1

:D cheers for the comments

Boost has been set via rpm, and it's hitting full boost just after 4,000rpm, although it was still spinning the wheels up on the rollers when hitting full boost, hence why we all had to sit on it lol

Setting A is controlled - boost vs rpm

Setting B is just 1.35bar

I've had my mate Steve (Bux from mig web) check over the car and basically the car hasn't been strengthened as it should have been for a let engine  it would only just about hold 1600cc together  what has been used to strengthen it has been bodged.

The bottom of the car is going to need a new cross member and various other strengthening plates welded to it - great

Can i just say, there is no real set way to sort your car out for a LET, some stitch, some dont. Courtenay never used to weld there cars.

Benn

No, rusty ones will be weak, out of all the shells i've seen, i've only ever seen one start to pull apart. And that was one of jasons that was driven very hard.

scott.parker
11-03-09, 11:02 PM
Ive seen a none rusty one, that was NOT stiched nore strengthend in any way rip the under side of the chassis appart, meaning the wings were touching on the pillars and a 2" gap between the bottom of the wing/door gap! so it can happen if drove hard with solid mounts/coilovers etc.

This was an XE on T45's coilovers.

I've managed to crack both chassis legs on my xe one near the crossmember. Think it's from drag racing it so much plus the shell not being the best or not having been stitch welded.

Most let's that haven't had the bay welded have only been running standardish power as well as they all run f20's!

game1
12-03-09, 02:14 PM
Looking at the car it's only the engine bay that has been seam welded and a few token spot welds here and there, nothing like what should have been done when doing a let conversion. The tie bars have only been bolted to the lower cross member and the bolts that have been used are a joke to be honest, know where big enough. The tie bars have started to pull themself away from the cross member and the holes that are in the tie bars are now oval instead of being round  This explains why the car has been a total bitch to drive as there's been nothing there to support the power the cars running. There's no support around the chassis legs either.

I've been on the phone to Chris Astley today and have ordered:- chassis plating kit, bottom arm strengthener plates, tca/tie-rod lowering kit and rose jointed tie-rod brackets. I've also ordered a new lower cross member from a local panel shop. All the bits should be here within a week or so, then Steve is going to strip the car down or me and have the above welded to the car and stich weld where possible without fooking the paint.

If only it had been done - right 1st time

my guess is the geometry will need doing again as well now if your fitting a new cross member etc .

Benn

How else would they be fitted? And big bolts? Do you mean sterench wise?

12-03-09, 09:09 PM
well well well........... after 2 days on and off the car is now somewhere close to where it should be!! to cut a long story short most of the car has been built to a very good standard but it seems the bits that actually matter were left untouched (as to speak) and bodged up.........but its not a problem it'll all be sorted and its good that someone like matty got hold of it as he will be prepared to sort it!

So firstly i raised up the car and inspected it........ the first thing i found was the front track control arms were bodged, along with the lower front cross member has also been bodged, these items take the majority of the power in a round about way. Basically somebody has repaired the front cross member but have lost the spacers in between the member and this on top of some bodge box section also without spacers has led to the front part crushing up when being done up.......this mean basically its never tight as the more you tighten it the more it crushes.....and eventually when it settles (even more so with 330bhp) then works loose again, the track control arm mounts have now eccentric'd them selves so under hard load the geometry is all over the place! A new lower cross member will be fitted along with new rose jointed control arm mounts, also the front hasnt been fully strengthend in the right places so a strengthening plate kit will be fitted to.....this should see the front strong and stiff enough to take the power................WE HOPE!!! lol

Anyway on to the geometry...............basically the toe once i put it on our machine wasnt as per the printout posted up but was some where close, but the camber was like touring car spec which is good for nothing on mattys car! So whipped the wheels off and free'd off the stut bolts, then fitted a set of camber bolts (which didnt fit as per instructions lol) got the car on the wheel alignment ramp and spent a good hour setting it all up......to find that once i set the camber to where it wanted to be (slight negative) the toe was miles toeing out.......this shudn't have been a problem BUT the rose jointed track rod ends were typical ****e aftermarket problems and not really fit for purpose. Once i set the toe to where it wanted to be there were like 3 threads holding each one on, so after a chat with matty i decided to order up some new track rod ends and hope the hubs hadnt been machined and the quick rack threads were that the same as the normal vaux rack......

So today i got hold of some track rod ends......i then disembled the old rosejointed ones off the car and luckily the new track rod ends fitted!! phewwww

i set the toe up by eye then got it back on the ramp, luckily id set it quite close so didnt take to long to set it all back up in spec! so after wot was a nightmare really to do an alignment set up we got there in the end.......im sure matty will post up a scan of the figures lol

ok so after 6 1/2 hours of cutting, grinding, banging etc...........the nova is now more structual at the front!! lol, first of all the old front pannel was removed which isnt an easy job............once off the whole front had to be cleaned up and all the old spot weld points were removed/cleaned etc..........the new front pannel was then offered up and after more cutting/grinding it was fitting in place nicely! First thing tho was to add gussets to the front crossmember before it was welded into place, this will stiffen up around the tie rod mountings, after making up new plates these were then tig welded into place.......then i had to move the radiator into a new position as the new cross member had the mount holes in the wrong place! so they were then done. Finally before it was welded in i shaved the front pannel to allow for extra clearance of the boost pipes!

then the pannel was welded into place, extra plates were also added onto the sides to tie the chassis right into the front cross member and also we added extra plates underneath around the lower joints! hopefully this will help with the power delivery......After a good few hours of chopping and welding the cross memeber was housed in nicely http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/biggrin.gif then we had to start work on the manifold as the external wastegate pipe from the collector point was crack pretty bad and was only going to get worse!! So off came some of the heat wrap and it was tigged up............then i bolted it back together quickly to get it back in the unit, where it will now be unbolted, seam sealed and painted! then the bodges will be put right and it can then be reassembbled http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Steve's spent another afternoon on the car for me .............(bloody thing http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/tongue.gif)

"basically today firstly i got some of the welds cleaned up abit with the grinder and then went over the welds with seam sealer, put a good amount on to make it look nice as matty wanted......... http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/dry.gif anyway after that had dried off i got down to painting the new front cross member, i only painted it with aerosol but its had a good few coats of primer and top coat so shud be all good. I then noticed there was a gearbox mount bolt missing......so cut a new bolt to length and fitted that, only to find the gearbox mount was fooked http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/notgood.gif So...........off comes the gearbox mount and i repaired it as it had been running loose and had mullered the end of the mount.

I then decided that whilst its in bits the wiring is a total mess, also the screamer pipe was aiming at the horn wiring therefore aiming hot exhaust gas at the wire which aint gunna be long before thats fooked to http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/doh.gif So stripped the loom back and run the reverse light switch away from the horn wiring and re-taped it up and routed them nicely.............i then started just tidyin up some of the other wiring including the dizzy, coil, gearbox switch and fan wiring......this is all alot better now!! http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Just now need to have a think about wot im going to do with the oil cooler as that was just shoved in the front not really held by anything substantual http://www.street-legal.biz/board/images/smilies/bang.gif "

Whoooo.........

To say i'm as happy as pig in ****e is an understatement :D I'm over the moon with it now

I took it out and for the first time since owning the car I could drive the car hard and hit the limiter in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th...... am soooo happy with it now, it hits three figures in no time at all

I've also ordered a bigger steering wheel, which should help and am going to have a play with the front coilovers as it's a little skippy on the front end at speed. If you hit a little bump it does make the car skip/makes the wheels spin a little, but is now totally driveable :D

Gav - turbo gav from mig also had a drive of it before I collected it and according to Steve he was impressed with it :D

I had this problem even with coilovers! I had to run it quite stiff to stop the front end lifting, going light and as a result just spin up. Downside is the skipping on bumps which can be scary when going round long sweeping bends at speed!

Glad your 100% happy.
