ive had plenty of fun tryin2get sr calipers off!
startin on passenger side wheel, turn to full lock(left),get a screwdriver on the 2 sliders and tap off with hammer(might break em but will need to replace em if putin brakes back on-not much from vaux).put allen key into the now exposed bolt, get a bar/pole(eg aluminium tent pole is what i use)and put over the allan key to give leverage, then turn it anticlocwise.
on the 16v ones i just spray them the night before with fospro or wd 40 then give em a tap with a hammer to shock them then use an alein key with a swan neck spanner on the end for a little more leveridge when you put them back on use i bit of copper slip helps in the future ps watch ure knuckles!

standard brakes?
theres a tool-like a long pin you can buy-just ask for a caliper pin remover at local car shop, they shud know what you mean, and u place that into the pin and tap it with hammer and it will come out the other side of the caliper in one piece. without the rite tool makes it more difficult, but is possible, but chance you may break the pins.
cost me about 3 or 4 quid for pin remover.
once the pins are out the pads SHOULD b easily removed...unless the caliper sliders have seized.

tool???
just make one outta a nial or a old small screwdriver!!!
just make sure u don't punch it through the middle as the pins will get wider:( not easy to remove then!!!

i swear i got a tool for the job, cos i was havin loadsa trouble with sr brakes, kept usin screwdrivers etc to get the pins out-but kept breakin the pins as you say. the pin remover tool is about 12cm long, width=just enuf to get through caliper, but at same time pushin pins through.

remove caliper(2x 10mm allen socket bolts at back of caliper).,then the disc is held in by 1 small crosshead screw(might need wd40).
1 screw neva seemed enuf to me for sumthin so important!
best to do the pads before removin caliper(remembering how the little clips at the front of the caliper come out).

the wheel nuts hold the disks in place while your driving along
the screw is only there to hold it in place if u remove the wheel nuts (ie remove the wheel)
as for the rest - dunno i removed mk2 calipers and replaced em with 16v ones and they are both identical setup (ie the ATE design) so i dunno about the old MK1 setup with the pins
