The whole point of putting a K&N on your mota is to draw in more air, but as with everything there is a down side, the problem of the K&N sucking in hot air from the engine and this causes hesitation and stuttering.

I was thinking...could I get a piece of hosing, and a cone filter, and attach one end of the hose to where you usually bolt the K&K on (on carb models) and put the cone filter on the other?

The whole reason for me wanting to do this is so that I can put the cone filter on the end of this hose right close up behind a mesh grille (very close, as in nearly touching it), so that it can suck in cold air from outside when you are stationary, and so it also gets a shit load of cold air when you are driving.

Have any of you done this? Will the fact that the air has got to travel all the way down a hose affect performance? Will it give a louder induction noise? (cos I want it as loud as possible, cos it sounds fucking wicked) and finally?will a piece of hose and a cone filter cost less than a normal bolt on filter?

Cheers lads, I know I?ve asked a shit load of questions?but please have a go at answering them!!!!!

Happy Motoring

Yes, this idea has been achieved before. If u look at http://www.stickerland.fsnet.co.uk/astra/hwork.htm#power for the improvements of using cold air. The only problem is u have gotta make sure water wont get in ur pipe, and if it does, it's not going to get to the carb. This may be a problem if ur doing 70mph while it's raining (not that it ever rains or anything).

I had thought of performing said modification on my old car, trouble is that I didn't have any large tubing from say, a tumble dryer to hand. I imaging if you can plumb it in such a way that there is some sort or filter in the way between the tubing and the carb (i.e. dont tube the cold air straight to the carb) you would be safe from dust and other flying particles from the front of the car. Not sure how you would deal with water tho....

It would make the car sound louder at the front, a nice throaty induction sucking noise when you floor it.

Dunno about power increases - if you force more air in, you need a proportionally larger amount of fuel dont you?? I'd imagine it would stall at high speed as it would running lean.

The hole Idea of a K&N is not to draw in more air, just cooler air. The cooler the air the more dense it is, therefore the more you can get into the cylinder and the bigger the bang. If I were you, instead of wasting money trying to do that project, just buy a bolt on filter and put some sort of impreza scoop in your bonnet right above the filter. This way you will have the same affect as your idea, but with a wicked looking bonnet and somewhere for the hot gases to escape which build up under the bonnet. The scoop will direct the fast flowing cool air right onto the filter. Good luck
