is it possible to remove a nova gsi engine without removing the gearbox? i know there isn't much room but it would make things alot easier for me if its possible at all lol i only put the engine in about a month ago so dont really want to take the whole lot back out

Its possible yes, but will be a lot more hassle then its worth TBH.

if you dont want the hassle why not remove the gearbo on its own, then remove the engine once its gearboxless ??

Err ive always seen engine & g/box removed as one, drop it out the bottom is easiest way, ive dropped an XE from a cav SRi and a 1.4 & a 1.3 SR eng/box and kept all three together, so i cant see why not:thumb:

it is possible, but it is a ballache. the engine was never designed to come out through the top.

perfectly doable. i've done it many times on nova's/corsa's fr that extra bit of room you want to remove the alternator ad the bottom pulley, and then wrap a rag or something over the chassis leg as you'll most prob get a little scraping when wigling it out lol

Yep, just need bottom pulley and alternator off, it's the way I fitted and removed my 1.4 with nothing more than a bit of exhaust tube and some rope. May need to jack the gearbox up a bit to create the space needed for the clutch though.

i used to just take the gearbox cover off and take the spline bolt out and pull the drive rod out the engine then lift it and take it out the top :thumb:

No?
I've fitted one thru the bottom, and would never do it again.
Stright in thru the top, how i've done all my xes.

ive allways done nova engines in the bottom and out the bottom with my xe corsa i allways took them out and put them in through the top

ive only just fitted this engine/gearbox in my nova but now im putting it into a corsa what has allready got an f13 gearbox i just wondered if it would of been easier just removing the engine and leaving the gearbox in place

Are people saying a 20XE motor and box will go in thru the top?
If they are there a better mechanic than melol I couldn't even get a 16xe and box out the top after everything was removed from the motorlol lol lol

If you can get the angle of the dangle right it's possible.

lol lol love it. its like some slimey porno quote!

i'd have personally thought it would have been easier to just swap it all in one piece, but if you have enough jacks and stands to hol things up whilst removing and fitting it shouldnt be a problem.

Please tell me your joking?
I've fitted all my xes thru the top. Ince the very time time i'd changed an engine.. You can get it in and on the mounts in about 5mins.. Its so easy.
My engine was fitted thru the top after the engine bay was smoothed and painted.. Didnt chip or sctarch it. Nova engine bays are like a whore, like throwing a sasauge up the high street.

I have removed my XE a few times leaving the gearbox and shafts in so should be easy with a 1.6.

It's perfectly possible to drop (or lift) the engine out and leave the gearbox in place. I even did it with the driveshafts still in the 'box - but it was a right ballache with the fly fowling on the CV joint.

Note. That was with a 200mm (GSI/GTE) Flywheel, with a 190mm you'll be laughing

Are we talking just the engine, or engine and box (f20). If it's engine and box I'd like to see it done:eek: . Like I said earlier, I tried to remove an x16xe engine and box thru the top of a nova and I couldn't get it out! it just fouled on everything it could havelol

Yes engine and box, never spilt one.
Hold about engine bay, till gear box down and bit and it will slide right in.
Easyer than in thru the bottom as its all done in one go.
Prob take my engine out in the winter to smooth more and paint my engine bay so i'll try and make you a vid if you want?

Cant beileve you couldnt get a x16xe out, they are tiny.

Did a mates corsa, ok the bays bigger but we didnt even remove the bonnet..

through the top for the win, never ever taken one out through the bottm, from 1.2 corsa's/nova's to let astras everytime through the top. on bigs saloon, took about half hour to unbolt the 1.2 with box attached lift that out and drop the x16xe complete with manifolds and box straight back in. easy peasy

Unbolting the box in the car sounds like extra work to me. Its so quick to dro it all oyut the bootom. ARB off, drop the ball joints out of the steering knuckles & it will all come out as one.

i hav always lifted my engine out with gear box in car you need to remove your bottom pulley to give you a bit more room and you need a jack under the gear box to give you the angle to lift engine out

Adam*D
15-09-08, 08:47 PM
Well I never.....lol I'll have to give it a try next time:thumb: Sounds much easier than lifting the car over the enginelol
