View Full Version : Joycey's Breeze Blue SR (J440 GMD)

~~joycey~~

So here we go! This is my 1992 Breeze blue SR which is my first proper nova project so this is still a learning curve for me so please bare with me.

This car was formerly owned by Lee and used to wear a set of white comp mo's and was very mint indeed!

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/PICT0218.jpg

But unfortuantly it suffered flood damage a while ago and had to be striped down and dryed out after which it ended up being a donor car for Lee's Blue MK1 minter, at which point it lost its wheels, suspenion, interior, head, exhaust system ect and was left at this stage for a while until i came to its rescue.

So off we went to dodington (near bristol) to pick it up..........

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/Picture611-001.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/10082008.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/10082008001.jpg

When i got it, it had SOME stuff in it......

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/Picture613.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/Picture615.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/Picture614.jpg

After clearing it all out i found the car to have some goodies in/on it such as a 4-2-1 manifold and a custom dash with a astra gte digi dash.

Also a new upper and lower front panel

I then jacked it up to have a good look under it and in the usal places for rust.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/Picture616.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/Picture617.jpg

Bad news i'm afraid!

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/Picture622.jpg

So i decided to take the bumper and lights off to have a better look and found this.

Tidy looking Nova in a good colour, but i'm biased! Ok, may well be a schoolboy question here, cowl top of the dash? Corsa item?

Stoo
10-09-08, 11:18 PM
Yeah, and it had the triple info bit in it that worked

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00198.jpg

After i bought it from Stoo I set about replacing pretty much everything on it, and got it just how i wanted it about a week before this happened.

Ill let Joycey post the pics if what he's recieved, but the poor thing is just a shell now and Im glad its gone somewhere to be reborn rather than scrapped, which is where it would have gone if he didnt have it.

Ill be watching this one excitedly :)

Surprised at how rusty it is when the body looked so sweet. But thats novas for you!

Glad to see its getting fixed up though, breeze blue sr's are cool. Plus wihlist its in pieces and getting welded its a perfect time to strengthen the engine bay.

What you got planned for it engine wise?

I somehow doubt it would have rotted the whole front end that quickly stoo, and anyway its a mk2, they fall apart on their own!

Youd be surprised, the front end had a little bit of rot anyhow, only minor, however im sure i included a new fron apnel in the sale??

Yep, you did, and i passed them onto Joycey as well.

He got a bit of a bargain tbh, the back was chock full of stuff. Most of it scrap but there were some gems in there as well lol.

Steve, after the car was flooded, i dried it out, but because the barn has dans wide archer in it, i had to leave the shell outside, and it definately accelerated the rotting process on the front.

The back end is surprisedly solid though :)

I did the same on mine, replaced the front end, but mine wasnt that rotten:eek: ! God damn water!!!

Look forward to seeing abit more on this.

On another note, shouldnt that fire engine be at a station or is your welding that bad??!!;) lol

You mentioned this is your first project, so i'm going to give one piece of advice before you start welding the front end.

- Do not put huge ugly patches in the engine bay. You need to source new inner wings, or fabricate the sections correctly so that when finished, it looks original. I think its such a shame seeing big patches over the chassis leg/inner wing joins on alot of Novas.

Weld plates from the underneath, and then filler smooth the top side of the bay could be an idea.

~~joycey~~
17-09-08, 09:09 PM
Ok then time for a update!

The bay has now been welded up by a friend of mine who's a sheet metal worker, i think he's done a pretty god job imo although some people said i should of bought a new inner wing ect but the budget is small at the moment as i have very little money because i dont currently have a job.

Also most people on here either have a garage or a lock-up to store and work on there cars in but in my case im outside on a friends driveway braveing all weather conditions :D

So anyways first of all i put loads of green rust remover on it :thumb:

Blimey 'eck! Last year we were going to visit Blighty, which coincided with the floods you've been experiencing. Horrid. At the time, our old bus didn't have any brakes so we couldn't make it. Just as well by the looks of it.

Going to follow this rebuild closely, I love breeze blue Nova's (very rare down my end of the channel) and even more when they're being restored with a passion. Keep it going! :thumb:

UPDATE:

Sadly i have now lost my job due to lack of work so i have no money for the nova so at the moment the fate of this car is 50/50 as its sat at a friends house and i cant just leave it sat there doing nothing :(

I'm really unsure wot to do

I dont know whether to just wait it out or sell it on or maybe even break it? There is still plenty i could do without spending any money (Finishing front panel, painting bay, undersealing ect) but its hard to carry on when you know you may not be able to finish?

opinions please?

Great. Just what you need restoring a Nova.

the fate of this car is 50/50 as its sat at a friends house and i cant just leave it sat there doing nothing :( I'm really unsure wot to do
No worries. Simply keep the car. Keeping it won't break the bank (well unless you have to pay stupid "suspension period" taxes for keeping a motor vehicle off road like we do in Holland) and if your friend has any understanding for the situation, he shouldn't mind your motor sitting up his drive for the time being.

I dont know whether to just wait it out or sell it on or maybe even break it? There is still plenty i could do without spending any money (Finishing front panel, painting bay, undersealing ect) but its hard to carry on when you know you may not be able to finish?
<old man mode> Who says you can't finish it? Do what you can, and in the meantime look out for a job. As pathetic as it sounds, ANY job will do, just as long as you stay active in the work scene. Applying for a job from a "working situation" always gets better results than starting without work. Trust me on this. </old man mode>

opinions please? well as stated above, DO NOT get rid of it. Here's more: I have 2 Nova's - one I bought in 1991 (aka Red Shed, TB'ed X16XE), the other (Diamond Black GSi) in 1998. The Red Shed was totalled by a to$$er in a Fiat Dobló  and the GSi had some Silverstone-graveltrap-induced paint damage. Both became nice little projects on their own. Unfortunately, temporary loss of work and a killer mortgage haven't helped so both projects are on hold until further notice. But will I get rid of them? NO. It will take some time, but I will eventually save enough money to get both project GSi and project Red Shed in gear. Despite my wife giving me grief for having "rustbuckets" in and around the house. (well she must love me! :thumb:) Hope this helps make up your mind. Sorry for the rant.

Cheers,
Niek

Steve
19-11-08, 03:21 PM
Well said niek ^^^

If you really want the project finished you'll have to work around it the best you can, I was out of work for a few months and lost loads of interest in both my cars but just remind your self of why your doing it, you'll never make the money back you spend on it and most projects are money pits but that doesnt mean you should give up on them :thumb:

I felt like that aout 10 years ago when i had my mk1 astra gte and the floor fell out. I dumped the project but now I really really wish i still had it. Esp as they're so few and far between now.
When i came into some money again i ended up with a pug 309 gti which, while being fun, just wasn't a mk1 gte. I couldn't get hold of one by that point!
If you can store it for a while then i say you should. If you break it you'll have some short term cash but when you've spent it you'll have no cash and no nova.

And the only other thing i'd think about is that you know where you stand with this car; whats wrong with it structuraly or mechanicaly. If you sell it, when you get another you won't know what your getting into, unless you pay premium amounts.

:UPDATE

Sorry about the poor pics.

I got on and done some work to the nova over the past few days :thumb:

The rear panel was rusty all along where the rubber still is and it had bubbles of rust on the lower panel so i ground it all back/off

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/SP_A0166.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/SP_A0167.jpg

Then its started raining so i made my "shanty town" lol

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/kjh.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/plkiujnhy.jpg

And the patched it up with fibre glass and the fillered it (i will probably replace the the whole panel when the car finally gets on the road) and also skimmed the others indents where i had grinded the scabs of rust off

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/pshk.jpg

And then hammerited it

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/xcvbnm.jpg

I dont think the colour match is too awful and its better than painting it black like some would imo.

And then put it to bed for over christmas and new year ect :D

It runs down the back of the quarter panel, behing the right hand side light.

It should drain to the outside, but it sounds like it has moved and is draining into the boot.:thumb:

lol yes i found them pipes on my old one, i thought WTF are these, then figured it out! IMO it's a crap system for drainage, as it dose over time rot the corners of the boot floor.

Good luck with the build dude.

UPDATE:

Ok so not really a massive update but its all good :thumb:

The other week i got fed up with haveing the inside of the SR in such a mess aswell as stuff lying around and haveing the mk1 i bought for spares in the way so i took EVERYTHING out of it and layed it all out on the floor and i was shocked at how much was in there!

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/MK1%20spare%20nova/SP_A0219.jpg

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/My%20Nova/SP_A0223.jpg?t=1238285574

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/grimgriffin/MK1%20spare%20nova/SP_A0221.jpg

lol so i then sorted it all out and put it all back in neatly and sorted ect :thumb:

And then friday was a big day for the SR as it FINALLY got moved out of its gravel grave where it has sat for the last 6 months because of the driveway being needed to be kept clear, in which time it has sadly rusted more due to it always being damp/wet underneath it

So it was time to play musical cars lol

just been through the whole thread. It is hard to get motivated when you havn;t got the money spend. I'm been in the same situation with the coupe so I've been doing all the little jobs I can that are free until cash comes up. Make a list of what you want doing and you'll be suprised at what you can make a start on for free. WHy not wip your engine bay loom out and start on that? All the relocating of bits I did where all done for free.

I got 5 litres of the stuff from a local paint suppliers. Helps having people in the trade still....

Halfords, IIRC, can mix it into an areosol for you.

EDIT, ask local paint supplier, when it comes to stuff like this i wouldnt trust Halfords...

Bodyshop suppliers should be able to color match with their swatches. There could be a couple of variants of breeze blue (anyone know???).

YES i know its a kingdom bumper YES i know most of your will hate it :wtf:
i just really like the look of big mouthed gsi bumpers (like on rick drapers car ect) but hate the fact that to get the desired gap in the middle you either end up looseing the bit where the number plate is or the bottom splitter part of the bumper :( Where as this is the same thing just extended so when i saw it on gaybay i thought i'd have it :thumb:

If it dose look to big and gay and ott i will probably cut a few inches out the middle and re join it ;)

I reckon you should keep it looking like an sr, but spraying the lower half instead of vinyl. standard mk2 sr's are quite a rare thing nowadays. Then again so are mk1s lol

Glad to see you've still got the enthusiasm for it, when you having the new front welded on?
