View Full Version : Suspension tops not coming off! :(
Hi guys,
Any advice on how to get the suspension tops off? I have the springs compressed, but for some reason I just can't get it to move. I have a ring spanner on the 3/4 inch nut and a 9mm socket on the rod, but the rod will be rounded off if I try any more. I have left it overnight with some WD40 on it for the time being.
Any help welcome.
Cheers
Steve
are you saving them? if not then baxter them (abuse with grinder)
Use an impact gun (air tool) to remove them.

AMEN to that brother.
Im never ripping my hands to bits, struggling with two ****e spanners trying to remove top mounts again lol
Air gun gets them off in about 2seconds...... :thumb:
also its easier to undo them whilst still on the car. no worrys about leathal spring compressors then

Old-skool impact driver with a nice lump hammer should work, has done for me when I've been stuck in the past. Failing that whip the strut round to someone with a compressor and impact gun, 'cause they never fail at undoing strut top nuts.

Just do it my way, be off in seconds
do not follow my advice unless you fancy a trip to a&e with a spring lodged in your face

I have undone them without compressors in the past & I am still medically intact.........

Its just knowing the technique of aiming all the bits at something you dont care about much (Mums lawn is best)
If the top mount bolt is seized, WD40 it as you have done, leave it overnight ort whatever & try & use proper tools on it.
Is it std dampers with a hex ontop the piston or an allen key type?
Hi, cheers for all the replies lads. The just came off the following morning so the WD40 must have done its job. I could really do with some shocks to match the -60mm springs now though cos it aint half bumpy on the back roads :)
Are those the springs I sent you? Glad you got them on okay.

i had spax 60mm shocks and springs and it was still bumpy as hell lol lol
You can do it easily with a jack and a socket.Undo the strut nut then jack up the car.Springs dont go flying off then

airgun al the way. just put your foot on the spring and hold the gun at arms length then fire em off. wouldnt do it no other way.
I never have an issue undoing these? I use a deep ring spanner (some random AF size?) and a 1/4 drive rachet with either a 8mm socket or hex impact bit (depending on design of shock insert)

19mm lol
Nope, ive not got a 19mm deep ring spanner, so i resort to a perfect fitting AF ring spanner ;) was using it yesterday, works a treat :thumb:

now your just showing your age with this imperial crap lol
Yep impact wrench is soooo handy for undoing top mounts. The shock loosens it. I always use spring compressors though.
To tighten the top nutafter assembly, I usually hold the piston with vice grips and a rag to stop scratching. Thats stops it spinning whilst you tighten.
